Think of this the next time you dig into your steak:

Beef environment cost 10 times that of other livestock

By Matt McGrath Environment correspondent, BBC News .

A new study suggests that the production of beef is around 10 times more damaging to the environment than any other form of livestock.

Scientists measured the environment inputs required to produce the main US sources of protein.

Beef cattle need 28 times more land and 11 times more irrigation water than pork, poultry, eggs or dairy.

The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While it has long been known that beef has a greater environmental impact than other meats, the authors of this paper say theirs is is the first to quantify the scale in a comparative way.

dear master Light,

I feel like I've sinned -

I just had a wonderful lamb curry that I made myself.

One wonders about all of those millions of bison killed in America and their impact on the environment.

I think the number of cows in the world and our desire to eat steak is the real reason we have global warm.

Seeing as termites emit more methane than cows, maybe we should cull termites.

But the termite emission is not man induced.

We must sort out the steak problem first because man created this problem.

But we are responsible for breeding the cattle to extreme numbers
to suit our insatiable taste for steak.

We are not responsible for farting but the number of farts is in our control.

We need to ban all farting to save the planet.

They have merely replaced those millions of bison that were killed for furs mainly in the USA.

Although, I too, am doing my bit to save the planet. ;)

BTW - it is mainly cow burps that are responsible.

A lot of threads on steak right now!

According to your picture I'd go for the middle cow well done.
I only like cows pink in the middle

We do not import beef from the US.

So that stuffs up the OP.

In any case those figures that you read come up all the time have been debunked time and time again.
