A 75-year-old woman was found dead beneath a snow-covered car and a 46-year-old man from Southampton was killed in a car accident on the A34. On Wednesday, a carer died on her way to work in Scotland and a man in his 60s died after falling through a frozen lake in southeast London. The previous day, four people died on Tuesday in two separate car incidents and a 52-year-old homeless man was found dead inside his freezing tent. England's first ever red "danger to life" alert for snow and ice was issued by the Met Office as people were warned to avoid all but essential travel on another day of sub-zero temperatures and "blizzard-like" conditions. The highest possible extreme warning is for parts of the south west of England and south Wales. It urges residents to "take action now to keep yourself and others safe" as Storm Emma, rolling in from the Atlantic, looks poised to collide with the "Beast from the East" weather front. As another day of severe weather left hundreds of drivers stranded overnight and more roads impassable in up to a foot of snow in Scotland and the north of England, further widespread accumulations were expected to bring up to 40cm (15in) in some areas. Met Office forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: "Things could yet get worse, there is more snow on its way. The problem will be when the snow gets trodden down and compacted and turns to ice. "Meteorologically, it's the first day of spring but winter is clinging on and giving us a right old kicking. "It's still in control." In a dramatic escalation of the severe weather that has crippled huge swathes of Britain for three days, the National Grid warned that there might not be enough gas to meet demand on Thursday. Although a red alert for central Scotland - which has faced the brunt of the extreme weather so far - ended at 10am on Thursday, police said everyone barring emergency workers should avoid all travel until weather conditions improve. The second red alert - which stretches from north of Cardiff to south of Exeter - is in force from 3pm on Thursday to 2am on Friday, meaning "widespread damage, travel and power disruption and risk to life is likely".

It was worth it, as one of these animals could feed up to 800 people. :o Then there was the booze, and boy was there a lot of it. In something all contemporary Londoners will easily recognise, pop-ups were in vogue, especially pop-up pubs. One was the excellently named City of Moscow, to reflect the freezing conditions. A modern day frost fair is completely out of the question. It'd never get past health and safety, and with good reason; in the frost fair of 1739 a whole swathe of ice gave way, swallowing up both tents and people. whoops... What about the Thames freezing over at all — could that still happen? It's unlikely. Firstly, Britain isn't as cold as it used to be — hard to believe when you've got six layers on, but true. From roughly 1350-1850 the country suffered through a 'Little Ice Age'. Today temperatures are unstable due to climate change, but they're still not as consistently cold as they once were. There's another major factor at play: London Bridge. As with so much of London's history, this phenomenon is intimately connected with the bridge. The medieval London Bridge had narrow arches to support it, and obstructive foundations. This slowed the river around the bridge and slabs of ice would form, which jammed against the bridge's wide piers. Then a sort of snowball effect (how apt) would occur, as this process repeated and quickly a solid raft of ice formed. This is a particularly violent way for a river to turn to ice, unlike a peaceful and flat frozen lake, a frozen Thames was a jaunty beast. Another man-made structural change to the river, also stops ice from forming. The man to blame for this one is Joseph Bazalgette. During the Victorian period the Thames became little more than a glorified open sewer, which became a danger to public health due to cholera outbreaks. Also it stunk. To sort the mess out and clean up the river, Bazalgette built two things: new sewers and new embankments (Victoria, Albert and Chelsea). These narrowed the river meaning it now flows faster, making ice yet more difficult to form. Not all hope is lost though, as the Thames has partially frozen over since; during the 'big freeze' of 1962-63, someone supposedly spotted a man cycling his bike across the ice near Windsor Bridge. We hate to knock a good story, but feel some nagging scepticism over this one — purely because cycling on ice is so bloody difficult. Even if it did happen, it was well upriver of London. Couple freed from 12ft drift around West Linton home

An elderly couple in the Borders whose remote home was surrounded by 12ft snowdrifts have been rescued, along with their two dogs.

The couple, aged 70 and 71, from West Linton, both suffer from health problems.

They had no heating as they had run out of firewood and their coal shed was buried in snow.

They were dug out of their home by two police officers and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team.

They are now staying with friends.

Sgt Davey Rourke said: "The house is in a dip so was slowly being buried in snowdrifts up to 12ft in height.

"We dug down to one of the doors where there was just 5ft of snow and thankfully got them out."

You do realise that it is winter at the North Pole and that even temperatures around 0 degrees are WELL above average

At the world’s most northerly land weather station - Cape Morris Jesup at the northern tip of Greenland – recent temperatures have been, at times, warmer than London and Zurich, which are thousands of miles to the south. Although the recent peak of 6.1C on Sunday was not quite a record, but on the previous two occasions (2011 and 2017) the highs lasted just a few hours before returning closer to the historical average. Last week there were 10 days above freezing for at least part of the day at this weather station, just 440 miles from the north pole.
