Title: does trickle down economics work
Post by Ajax on Feb 11th, 2018 at 9:38am
The neoliberalism system we have today was fostered by Milton Freedom and his Chicago boys from the 1950's to early 1970's, although it didn't come into fruition in its entirety until Reagan, Thatcher and Hawke adopted the policies of free market capitalism.

These events gave rise to the trickle down system or that's what we were told.

Who thinks the trickle down system works and why.....??

Work? What do you mean by "work?" If you mean has it made the rich richer and the poor poorer, then yes, it works very well.

I voted "maybe" as "trickle down" means many different things.

Some things I've heard of as being described as trickle down:

*Deregulation (itself a vast topic)
*Union busting
*Cutting personal income taxes
*Cutting corporate income taxes
*Cutting capital gains and dividend taxes

In terms of terms of whether or not it "works", well that depends on what works means.  The supply side program was successful in reducing inflation for instance, but it didn't cause employment or growth miracles.  And its most basic claim did come true--the hours worked by the most highly compensated people increased significantly.  Bear in mind it was a different world then...the top income tax rate here was 70%, so that was a real disincentive to work more.

The top Reagan tax bracket cut paid for itself, but all the other bracket cuts cost money.  Some have insisted tax cuts always pay for themselves, which just isn't so.

Thatcher was successful in increasing economic growth in the UK compared to the abysmal late 70s, but at some terrible costs (the miners most severely, deindustrialization most seriously).  That said British labor unions truly were out of control.

And I think it's well accepted that "trickle down economics" increases inequality, though the role of "free trade" and mass immigration can't be ignored.

There's a forum member here who admitted to paying a German woman on The Reeperbahn to take a tinkle on him.

Seems like Trickle Down worked for them.

Exactly: it's just a natural aristocracy and/or caste sytem being allowed to develop!

"Democracy", aka THE BLACK UMBRELLA, is a means to an end assuming it promotes unnatural equality arising a solidified mediocrity!

Oh, and then there's mass immigration,... like wtf is actually going on here  ::)  :o :o :o :o :o  :P ?

It may not appears so in the short term, but our standard of living would not have risen to what it is today if it was not at least true some of the time. I know how we lived when I was a child, and my parents could not even afford a car. Now, everyone on our street has three and a boat. So don't start whinging about how hard these times are.

Are we wealthier, healthier and generally better off since the 70's?

Trickle down economics doesn't work because at the bottom of the economic system there are too many people competing with each other for the crumbs.

It's mainly because the addiction to control of inflation by keeping unemployment not far below 5%.

If unemployment were allowed to fall to zero percent there would be much more competition for labor which would force up the price.

In the 50 and 60 the projections were for a 3 or 4 day working week by well before now. The tech improvements happened and the increased productivity happened. The problem with the forecast is that it assumed that everyone would benefit. Instead greed has ruled. Weak governments allowed greedy corporations and a hand full of greedy individuals to monopolise virtually all of the benefits.

Trickle down is an insult to the intelligence of imbeciles.

The cartoon showing wealthy people laughing about Trickle down is 100% accurate.

Giving money to these grubs just makes them more wealthy, it does not benefit anyone else - ever.
