No, I have the talking book but when you are thinking about something that is said, you miss the following and rejoin when you have thought about what made you think. It's good to listen to but you tend to miss parts as your mind is often working elsewhere. With a book you would just stop reading and pick up where you left off.

Cool, I'll have to watch it? Good movie? Although from what you said it sounds like the standard line of "violence never solves anything" which I was making a point against, it does.

edit: OK I did...

Quote:
Anyone who clings to the historically untrue and thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst.

And I agree with them, I think I said something along those lines to someone here recently. If I can remember who it was I'll search and paste the link.(Put's on thinking cap... It was a woman)

Pulp Fiction my fave movie

Quote:
Jules: "You read the Bible, Brett?"
Brett: "Yes!"
Jules: "Well, there's this passage I've got memorized that sort of fits this occasion. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of the evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and goodwill, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!"

Setanta,

I see no conflict, in that quote, and with my faith.

Setanta,

Atheist believe that God does not exist.

And atheists believe that the reality       which they experience,        provides sufficient evidence for all rational persons, to then conclude, that a creator God does not exist.

QUESTION/PROPOSITION;
On what basis,       in knowledge,       can an atheist presume to 'know' or even 'believe', that there is no God ?

QUESTION;
Are atheists [men], omniscient beings ?

Dictionary;
omniscient = = knowing everything.

I would offer that men are      not      omniscient beings.

So, with men       not      being omniscient, logically, for a group of individuals, to categorically state that they are 99% certain, that there is no unseen realm, and no creator God,
isn't that proposition [in logic] wildly presumptuous ???

Dictionary;
presumptuous = = failing to observe the limits of what is permitted or appropriate.

Yadda said somewhere....

Quote:

Because the atheist has had no experience of a spiritual realm, does that [lack of 'experience'] establish the 'impossibility', of the existence of a spiritual realm?

And would the reasonable person, require that 'rational' community members must accept, only the atheists perceptions of what 'reality' 'is' ?

And, to an atheist, is any differing experience [of another person] always going to be invalid,
...because the atheist has not shared ['known'] such an experience?

+++

Take the example of the existence of radio waves;

500 years ago, radio waves effectively did not exist [within the human experience].

Why?

Because we humans cannot see 'invisible' radio waves.

But today, a human being of average intelligence, would not dream of claiming that radio waves do not exist.

AND SO, LOGICALLY,
Even today [in this technological age], there must exist, the real possibility that there are many real phenomena [even which still exist within 'nature'] which our human senses [and our present technology] cannot perceive.

Only an arrogant person would deny any possibility, of any other,   ...'reality' being possible.

OR CONTRAWISE, are atheists suggesting [i.e. are they going to try to impose the 'belief'], that only the experience of the majority of mankind, can be a basis for defining our reality,    absolutely?

And are atheists suggesting that because our human senses [still] cannot perceive as yet, undiscovered 'phenomena',
or are they suggesting that because we have not yet created a machine which can sense them, that we should always dismiss any possibility of the existence of those 'things', which as yet, remain undiscovered,
and which as yet, remain unknown to the perception and comprehension, of the common man ?

I believe that all of these entities are spirit.

I believe that [atm!] demons are largely constrained [and for the most part, are they unable to harm us].

I believe that all mankind are [also] spirits who are [somehow] constrained within these physical [earthen] bodies [until we die].

I believe that this physical 'reality', is a form of prison for us.

I also believe that this physical world is a 'construct' [a creation, a 'reality'] made by God.

There is a difference between believing something and not believing something. I do not believe what people have told me, I do not believe god exists, it's a lack of belief. Believing something is a positive affirmation, not believing is a negative. If someone told you that there were fairies in your garden would you believe they didn't exist or just choose not believe what the person said? I can't know that a god of some sort does not exist but I do not believe what people have told me about their gods. I hope you can see the difference.

Setanta,
No one really knows or is certain, about what our real circumstances are.
We come into this world as naive and uninformed beings, as small uninformed children.
And as we grow in knowledge and [our own] experience, we each come to some sense of an 'informed' but limited understanding, of the nature of the reality that we find ourselves in.

We 'do' science [in our 'consciousness'], as we learn about the world, and the 'heavens' around us.

We simply build supposition, upon supposition, as we undertake our pilgrimage in this world.

But what is the true nature of this reality, which we seem to be experiencing ?

Does any human being lay claim to know ?

I certainly do not know.

But i certainly do not dismiss the knowledge, or the experience, of new things which challenge my current beliefs and understanding.

You said.....
"I do not believe what people have told me about their gods."

There is nothing at all wrong with embracing a healthy degree of scepticism, when 'interfacing' with men/mankind, imo.

Setanta,

I'm a person who is always asking questions.

And yet, i have come to a 'place' where i can easily say,      that i believe in, and i fear, and i love, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

And everyday i still seek [for] him.

Everyday, i walk in this world, imperfectly seeking the God that i love.

.

Setanta,

Q.
If there is a God [wink], why does God 'hide himself' from mankind ?

Q.
If a person wanted to search for [in order to 'find' and to know God],
what 'prerequisite' would that person firstly need to be in possession of, in order to have an improved chance of 'finding' him ?

There is a difference between believing something and not believing something. I do not believe what people have told me, I do not believe god exists, it's a lack of belief. Believing something is a positive affirmation, not believing is a negative. If someone told you that there were fairies in your garden would you believe they didn't exist or just choose not believe what the person said? I can't know that a god of some sort does not exist but I do not believe what people have told me about their gods. I hope you can see the difference.

Set, have you ever at any stage for your life believed in god/s?

I've tried to.
Parents tried to convince us as kids that Santa and Easter bunny were real too but we didn't buy it. Even went so far as to put out talcum powder and make rabbit tracks in it to convince us.

I suspect there are physical properties in the brain which cause different people to be either more or less receptive to mysticism of one kind or another. Maybe one area of the brain is more or less active.

I consider myself a hardwired atheist and have no memories of ever believing in Santa or the other ones.

My first memory of religion was in 1st class, we all had our eyes closed for a prayer and I had a peak around and saw the earnest look on the other kids faces and thought....suckers...

I've noticed that these days, in this modern and 'sophisticated' age,       so many people simply express both an aversion and a hostility, towards any idea that a creator God exists.

They don't need Him.

They, are not weak minded.

Some may admit, that they have no idea, what the truth of their circumstances are.

But they are certain,        that they themselves         are sufficient, to the needs of deciding what is most important in this life.

1 Corinthians 1:22
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23  But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

Psalms 34:18
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Isaiah 57:15
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

so who was jesus christ.
and should you believe in him.

in the way most christians believe in him, not at all.

but lets not be so quick.

even as a mythological figure, he is very very relevant.

his story ( at least as far as the crucifixion goes) is that the ideal man , the innocent man, is subjected to the most horrible pain and suffering and he is confronted with pure malevolence and evil and he is betrayed by everyone .

now thats just a representation of what Jung called an "archetype".

and its ahero myth.

because despite being subjected to the most extreme forms of pain suffering and injustice, jesus still keeps picking up his cross and carrying it forward nobly and not complaining and" thinking of others" (as in his concern for the robber supposedly being crucifed next to him).

what does this hero myth mean.

it means that you should try to act heroiclally and do the same.
this isnt "the good news", this isnt a religion for "the happy clappies".

this is a religion for supermen. for men who can remain unflappable despite pain and fear and injustice

and its no wonder people either corrupt it into either a fairytale about milk and honey or , if they start to understand its implications they completely turn away from it.

people who understand what christianity actually means turn away from it like an animal turns away from the fire . and no bloody wonder.
but that doesnt mean it isnt a recipe for transcending suffering.

and if you dont understand that life is suffering, you are either naive or you are just going to have to wait a bit longer to find this out

Yep.

If a person 'gets it' [the message of Christianity], he/she understands that, yes, this 'life is suffering'.

The message of Christianity, calls on us to turn around, to turn our back on this world, and to ~try~ to 'do the right thing' [try to follow a moral path].

And in trying to 'do the right thing', yes, that will often entail our own suffering and personal sacrifice and/or personal pain.
[   as aquascoot said; "people who understand what christianity actually means turn away from it like an animal turns away from the fire"   ]

That, is the part that turns off, most people, to Jesus Christs message.   i.e. the prospect of suffering and personal sacrifice!

"Pain and suffering ?   Personal sacrifice ?   Forget it !   Where is my beer, and when does the game start. [or some such distraction/pleasure/emotional gratification.]"

.

The message of Christianity;

God wants us to recognise and acknowledge the mistakes [i.e. all of the poor choices] we have made in this life, and to be sorry, in our hearts.

And to accept His offer of redemption.

That offer to men, has always been 'on the table'.

Isaiah 55:6
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
7  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

.

"Pain and suffering ?   Personal sacrifice ?   Forget it !"

It a hard sell, to make, to 'the carnal mind' of men, who are distracted by the many pleasures of this world.

Philippians 3:19
Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

Matthew 16:24
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Deuteronomy 8:2
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

Romans 8:5
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

1 Corinthians 1:18
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
.....
22  For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23  But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24  But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

What if 'this life' is a fixed game?

What if we can't 'win',
...on purpose!

What if we were always 'fated' to fail here [spiritually]?

Speaking of mankind, the Bible states that we have all 'been corrupted' by the cares of this world.

Psalms 14:3
They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
[and Romans 3:10-12]

The Bible states that man is not righteous.
That, our very nature precludes it.
But, has this 'deck of cards' [which we are playing with] been stacked against us!?
IMO, we appear to be playing in a 'fixed' game!

But for a very specific purpose.

God is clever.

And [most] men are dumb.

God knows which of us, will repent, which of us will come to be sorry, for our mistaken choices in this life.

And which will continue to be 'lost sheep', 'lost, wandering, in the wilderness', that is the world.

But nevertheless, God leaves all of the choices that pertain to our fate, to us.

"...so that they are without excuse."

God is separating us [mankind], 'sorting' us,  ....or rather, we are 'sorting' ourselves.

Jim Morrison quotes:

There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors.

I am the lizard king. I can do anything.

Whoever controls the media, controls the mind.

A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.

Where's your will to be weird?

Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as ravens claws.

Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.

Love cannot save you from your own fate.

"Get em for me!"

Mohommed Ali whispering in the ear of Mike Tyson (his little friend) centre-ring just before Tyson put Berbick away in the most dramatic of typical Tyson ways and went on to put the 'Great' Larry Holmes into the 'fear' factory - both of whom took full advantage of an aged and feebling Ali and gave him a real beating to the point he was forced to quite by Doctors.

"There were only two Golden Ages of Heavyweight Boxing. Ali's and Tyson's  - both of whom shared an even Golden Moment, in their role with Holmes & Berbick."
Ring Magazine.

Mike Tyson even said "Ali  was so good, even then - for he definately sucked Holmes & Berbick in to get hammered by me. Ali knew exactly what he was doing, when he took them both on and got a beating both times."

It was said by a Carer to Ali, that she heard Ali saying (to a family visitor) "Only Tyson could knock me out for good, if I didn't watch myself." Ali later could not confirm this when asked by a Reporter, but he also didn't respond at all to the Reporter much.

A COUNTER-MORALITY

To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.
- Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

Such an argument [above] is idiocy, imo.
We can't have what we want, we can't take what we want, simply because we want to possess what we may see.  ....unless you are a neo-Marxist. [Yadda]

"In truth, laws are always useful to those with possessions and harmful to those who have nothing; from which it follows that the social state is advantageous to men only when all possess something and none has too much."
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau, The Social Contract

And.....Those persons who plant a vineyard, or build a dam, or build a house, deserve to be protected [in their life and in their property] by the laws of a society of men, imo. [Yadda]

.

I prefer the logic of Martin Luther King, Jr., here.....

SOUND MORALITY

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

The first principle of value that we need to rediscover is this: that all reality hinges on moral foundations. In other words, that this is a moral universe, and that there are moral laws of the universe just as abiding as the physical laws. (from "Rediscovering Lost Values")

Ah, Bukowski. Such a cheerful chap.

forget you

a woman

leaving you,

My experience of Australian police officers is one of polite respect for white or black. They do an unenviable job dealing with stupid people, and deserve our support. I think you are paranoid.

The book of Psalms, is my personal, very favourite book of the KJV bible.

And Psalm 119, is my favourite chapter of the book of Psalms.

And Psalm 119 [at 176 verses], is also  >> the <<  longest chapter in the whole of KJV Bible.

Psalms 119:1
Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.

.....and on and on, and on, it goes.

It is wonderful stuff.

Many, many affirmations.     And joy, to the heart.

.

John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29  My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
