Title: I found a Hand-Gun
Post by JaSinner on Nov 4th, 2017 at 11:20am
Walking the dogs early this morning,
I found a Hand-Gun.
It was when one of my dogs went off the path a bit to take a dump.
As I use doggy bags to take the 'turds' with me (and post them to Harris Park in Sydney). I used another doggy bag to pick the gun up and put in my large leg pocket.
I was in a bit of shock, a surge of adrenalin, etc.

I have it at home and with gloves, I've discovered that it is loaded.

What should I do?

Hand it in.

You never know what its history is and you never know just how you could be discovered with it!

you shouldn't have touched it. Should have left it where it was and called the police.

I suggest you still call the police and let them know where you found it

I should call the police.

...but the idea of having my 'own gun' is somewhat - exciting.

It's a pistol that cannot be legally owned here as barrel looks shorter than the 120mm minimum, it could not have been stolen from a licensed firearm owner it had to be illegally imported.

Call the police and get them to come and pick it up, if it still has the serial number it can be traced from the manufacturer.

Keep it against the day you might get a home invasion. Keep it oiled and well looked after and wrapped in an oil skin. Have it locked away from your kids.

It's worth $1,500 on the black market, and so it also has monetary value.

Refresh my memory, Marla ~ what type of 9mm handgun do you own, and for what reason did you buy it? And do you oil it and keep it rust-free so it won't back-fire on you? Wrap it in an oil-cloth to reduce oxygenation?

Oh, and rumor has it he was most likely a Trump supporter.

" Another resident, Dennis Valenzuela, told NBC affiliate KUSA that he noticed Ostrem treated tenants differently because of their race. Thornton is about one-third Hispanic or Latino.

"Very quiet, but verbally abusive toward Hispanics," said the 49-year-old maintenance worker. "Just real rude, he would use vulgar language with Hispanics and stuff like that."

Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila wouldn't say if investigators knew about neighbors' statements or whether race played a role in the shooting, but told NBC News that the case is "an active investigation and everything will be looked at."

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/walmart-shooting-suspect-scott-ostrem-could-face-death-penalty-n817296

But don't worry, this current administration won't ever call him a "terrorist" although that's exactly what he is.

Now I don't know how Australian law works but if that gun was used in a crime and you are now in possession of it, you can be charged with the crime it was used in.

So there you are.

Marla is confirming that my advice is the very best of all :~ keep it in a secure lock-up at home; oil and clean it regularly; wrap it in an oil cloth; consider your find a piece of good luck against the day you may be home invaded by Pacific Islanders or some other group of imported Abos.

'Aborigines' ~ 'Abos'.

'Pommies' ~ 'Poms'

'Refugees' ~ 'Reffos'

'Irish' ~ 'Paddies'

'Welsh' ~ 'Taffs'

'Scots' ~ 'Jocks'

'Italians' ~ 'wogs'

There's nothing racist about these at all.

Well, by good fortune.
My mate, who is a cop - popped in today.
Eventually, I told him and showed him.
He 'reprimanded' me on my 'delay of action'.
He called the 'local' Police and they came around.
I was given a bit of a verbal by them for not calling them straight away. I took them down to where I found it.
They, of course took it off my mate, who took it off me straight away.
They asked why I 'kept it' for awhile?
I answered simply - "To go to Lakemba and shoot Moslems, possibly?"  :P
Well that smart-arse comment didn't go down well as I was back-handed in the face by my mate with a "Wake up to yourself!"  >:(
I haven't been charged in any way (so far). But it was very stupid of me to have  taken the action I did. I guess I just got caught up in the adrenalin of it. Of finding something like that. Of something ...precioussssssss
I have been in trouble with 'firearms' in the past.
I won't deny I go all 'glazy-eyed' when near a gun.
I told the cops (and my mate) this and understand why I never joined the Police or Military.
In Military Cadets once, I was kicked out for aiming the unarmed rifle at the Lance Corporal and pulling the trigger like in a trance.

Yes, it's best I stay away from guns - as I do.
But to find one. Well - it did feel 'special' for a short while.
I am embarrassed by my actions - but I just didn't 'think' about anything much else, except for the gun, at the time.

My ....preciousssss.

Ohh no.

Actually - they will remove the rounds from the pistol
& check them for fingerprints.
I hope you haven't touched the rounds?

They might be able to match the fingerprints up with a known criminal using their database.

What they will probably do, is tell you they don't know if they will charge you or not -
it's up to the sergeant  etc etc.

That way they will leave you hanging in fear for 6 months while they decide what to do.

You would have been better off chucking it a the river than

Well I did sorta shoot myself in the foot with that one.
I am so lucky I did not 'imprint' on the hand-gun.
As of yet (as far as I have been told) - the gun and prints on it are not related to any crime ...yet.
Overall, it was a stupid thing for me to have done.
Hell, would I have done the same thing if I found an un-exploded bomb (as I was lectured - at the Police Station)?
No.
Although I copped a back-hand off my mate for my untimely wit, he was supportive overall on my behalf.
Still - I totally got my knuckles whacked on this matter and I spent a very long night at the Police Station (no coffee!!!) for my troubles (not cell), being on hand for further questioning and statement, etc. Waiting on the phone for Centrelink would have been better.

So I can absolutely say that yes, if you find a gun - ring the Police ASAP.

I remember when I was a lad 18yo, I boarded with an old couple in Sydney , anyway the husband was telling me an aquaintace of his came across a dead body when out walking or something.

He reported it to the coppers and was interrogated to the point that he felt he was no.1 suspect and he apparently said to anyone interested after that

"If that happens to you pretend you didnt even see it and keep walking!"

No charge thankfully.

This is why I joined the Medical side of things.
I'm the 'tool', when it comes to guns.  :P

The excitement, adrenalin - really clouded my judgement.
I was lucky that I used a doggy do-do bag to pick it up (it was dirty) and work-gloves to handle it at home.
All that I could think of at the time was "It's mine. It came to me. My preciousss" etc.
Mainly because there is no other way that I could attain such a thing, unless I go through all the correct procedures.
I mean, what would you do if you found a bag of money?
Hand it in to the Police straight away, let alone call them asap to the spot??
It's done and dusted now.

They sent it off to some Forensic place in Sydney and within 6 hours the prints on the gun came back as 'un-identified' (not on record). So 'so far-so good' for me. Hence why I was kept at the station all night, until the result came back. But I'm sure 'I'm still on record'  :P

My first problem with guns was as a 15 year old. My mate had a pump action pellet gun. From his balcony in western Sydney, we decided to shoot his Star Wars figurines off the wall. But when it was my time, he handed me the gun and had to get more pellets for his go, from inside. With the gun in my hand, I went all glazy eyed and ignored the figurines. Why 'play'? So I went to the edge of the balcony and started shooting at the people walking buy in the carpark below.
I had scored points on at least 10 people before my mate came back and wrestled it off me. Within 20 minutes, due to complaints by the victims - 5 police cars were at our place and I was taken in (as was my mate).

Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured - no broken skin, just bruising on two people (clothes buffered the other shots). I was a cry-baby at the Police station and in time, I was given a 1 year good behaviour bond.

Yep - guns are a 'problem' for me.
Keep me and guns far apart.
I'm a good example why 'anyone and everyone SHOULD NOT be allowed to own firearms'.

As for this Texas nutter, the very fact that he had been dishonourably discharged from the army should have been enough to have barred him from owning a gun.

It's not that gun-ownership is rampant in the US, but that the people who shouldn't be entitled to own a gun are not being identified and denied a weapon to take home with them.

The US population is 323 million people, and of course there are going to be incidences like this due to the sheer number of people in the population pool. The miracle is that it doesn't happen more often, and especially because Hollywood's success has for decades been dependent on sex-and-VIOLENCE being the core ingredient of its entertainment business.

You are a funny guy, I couldn't help but laugh.

Since it hasn't been connected to any criminal activity yet it may have been the once legal property of a deceased citizen. Maybe when your gun laws became more restrictive he didn't turn it in and now the family just dumped it.

As for your final statement, most people show much better judgement than you and don't need Nanny telling us what we can have!

What pattern of sword do you prefer? I bought a dragon head samurai sword, I would be a danger to myself if I handled it much.

Samurai swords are technically superior to most traditional swords. They are so strong, sharp etc. But sword fighting is more than just a one sided slash. This is where the samurai swords fall short. Unless they can get the first effective strike: hitting the opponent of breaking the opponent's sword. They are flawed in the way one must use them to follow through with a one-sided edge. You need extreme wrist manoeuvres to bring such a sword around for another swing quickly. Especially with the longer versions. Even then, doing it by wrist lessens the strength of impact.

I do prefer double-sided swords. If I miss on the first strike, I can automatically bring it back quickly to strike with the other side. No need to get wristy or twist my shoulders. It's fast and effective.

Now, if someone could make a Double-Edged sword with the quality of a Katana sword ...then we are in business!
But I doubt it will happen as most of the strength of the Samurai sword is held in the blunt side. It really is just a long strong face shaving razor.

I have favourites. I like the Cutlass styles because they would be the all-round type of sword fighting. One-sided is their only drawback. But they are, as they say, good for close quarter confrontations with minimal movement.

Foils are good and extremely fast work. But you have to be very precise in your targeting or the opponent can still persevere in his attack with a good conventional sword and brush away any foil defence, if not break it. So a slice across the throat or into the heart is really the only sure bet for a foil not receiving a retaliation. If opponent is well armoured in such places - the Foil fighter would well and truly be "Drats! Foiled again!".

So I guess my choice Sword would be the Excalibur type. But a shorter version, not the traditional 'Long Sword'. Double-Edged, good weighted pommel and length suited to close quarter combat. The Hilt and pommel must be very practical more than artistic as it really has to be suited to comfortable and efficient use.
...when Sword fighting. You fight with the aspect that the blade is just the extension of your Hilt/Pommel. In other words - you are just throwing punches and the blade is the bonus. It's like teaching a sprinter to run 120m rather than the actual 100m. This way, you teach the sprinter not to pull up early at the 98th metre, as they are want to do - in the end. Same with Sword fighting. Teach them to fight as if their blade is but 20cm long and with always a far heavier training sword.

It was quite an experience.
Since then, I've kept my hands off them.
In Ukraine they've tried to push them onto me, while I had my work stint there, in the hope I would feel some sort of desire to join their ranks. You get offered a lot of free 'kit' and guns (and women) but they couldn't buy me as much as my client employer already had. It wasn't the idea of fighting with a gun in my hands against drones and bombardments. More like fighting alongside savage Ex Soviets against Ex Soviets basically.

It wasn't the idea of fighting with a gun in my hands against drones and bombardments. More like fighting alongside savage Ex Soviets against Ex Soviets basically.
