Title: Electric cars to be cheapest option by 2027? Post by Jovial Monk on Aug 23rd, 2017 at 10:37am
Skeptical Science thinks so:
Quote:
https://skepticalscience.com/Problems-For-Oil.html For cross country trips I doubt EVs will ever be feasible unless small fusion reactors become possible. For commuting to and from work, the shops etc? If cheap enough will be perfectly feasible and they should be cheap enough before long. In 20 years when EVs are common? Less smog/pollution, much less noise in cities etc. Sounds great! |

Electric cars will not be anything in Australia until everybody who wants a vehicle can afford electric, and the country has thousands of charging points (which will cost many millions of dollars), and that will be in fifty or more years time possibly....... ::)

Inside of 20 years EVs will be commonplace.

This is you dragging your shitstained arse across a thread.
I did say they would not be good for interstate travel, fine for the normal commute. You do not debate, you try and cover up interesting posts because you cannot stand people honestly debating environmental matters: they might raise the subject of AGW. Then again, by 2027 that may have changed. I can’t drive to Melbourne from Adelaide on one tank of petrol either. |

Not making a good case against the ever improving, ever cheaper EVs. |

Actually the ute will do 850Km apparently. So Solly ;) |

Title: Re: Electric cars to be cheapest option by 2027? Post by Baronvonrort on Aug 23rd, 2017 at 4:08pm
We need Nuclear power to run these electric cars.
Nuclear cannot be dialed back like coal or gas it runs flat out for the fuel cycle. In the USA the Nuclear plants paid power companies to take their off peak loads, cars could be recharged at night with nuclear power. Australia has the most expensive electricity in the world thanks to the idiots who push renewables, solar doesn't work at night and windspeed also decreases at night. |

So you can just make it to Melbourne from Adelaide on a tank of gas. How long before an EV can do that too, and more? Even now 400Km will allow a week of commuting. If you have solar panels you can recharge your car for free which is attractive. Economics is dictating a move to renewables. A move to EVs is just starting. When there is a battery breakthrough that will just errrr accelerate. |

Well, they have boosted the range fourfold so that is a good start. With more and more moving to EVs the price will go down and there will be incremental improvements.
As to betting against progress, nope not me. |

With increasing take up of solar panels, some small windmill generator, less carbon pollution. EVs are the future! |

Wall Street Journal offers a dissenting voice:
Quote:
http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/print/WSJ_-A002-20170713.pdf Can’t copy the article. Basically points out that without subsidies and with cheap oil EVs incl hybrids face a more difficult path to travel. Against that, AGW will mandate, after the major flood I predict, rules that mandate or have the effect of the phasing out of the ICE. |

Can’t tie shoelaces—that why you wear elastic sided boots?
You chose not to read the science of AGW so we are talking at complete cross purposes. Let me tell you something tho: we are at or very near the temperature that applied in the Eemian period 120,000 years ago. Bit more we will be there or over the temperature that applied then. So? You ask? So—in Eemian times sea levels were nine metres higher than they are now. It is no coincidence then that the major icesheets on Greenland, West Antarctica and East Antarctica are destabilising with the glaciers that reach the sea retreating rapidly. It is likely in your lifetime that they will let go completely. What might tip the temperature over the edge? The sun has been in its quiet state. Within two decades I reckon it will go into its active state sending more warmth our way. If you can’t accept that what can we talk about? Watch this video. The scientist talking has 25 years experience in studying the main ice sheets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVEM1cgMc1s&feature=youtu.be |
