Title: BBC Believes You Only Read 6 of These Books Post by mothra on Jul 20th, 2017 at 1:28am
The BBC believes that most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books below. How many have you read?
(Tip: The average Goodreads member has read 23 out of 100 books on this list). Interestingly, the BBC never actually made this declaration. The list was created by an unknown individual and spread around the internet as a meme called The BBC Book List Challenge. It was probably loosely based on another list of books that was the result of a survey carried out in 2003 by the BBC in which three quarters of a million people voted to find the nation's best-loved novels of all time. http://www.listchallenges.com/kaunismina-bbc-6-books-challenge |

I've read 64 on the list, but the list cheats.
It's lists the Complete Works of Shakespeare and Hamlet as seperate entries. So i've really read 63 ... and the list is only 99 books long. |

I was surprised that only one book of John Irving's made the list ... but it's my favourite .. A Prayer for Owen Meany ... so i'll forgive them.
But damn, he's good. One of my favourite authors. |

Both Brideshead Revisited and The Great Gatsby are read nearly yearly by me. Recently I drove down to Montgomery to the F Scott Fitzgerald house and museum. Amazon now has an original series about Zelda Fitzgerald called Z - The Beginning of Everything.

The early 80's Brideshead Revisited series is first class. Remarkable. Gatsby was played by Redford in the 70's with Coppola directing and is worth watching. The Dicaprio Gatsby - don't bother. |

Oh i think i might have seen the Coppola one. It rings a bell anyway.
A book that i think truly deserves to be on that list is The Famished Road by Ben Okri. Scored a Booker Prize. A brilliantly unique and thoroughly captivating story. It can take the place freed up by having Hamlet there twice. |

Quite a few of them were on school reading lists ... or the school reading lists of my brothers, so i read them when they were finished.
A few more at uni. But i'm an avid reader. Something i encourage in my children. Any books you would see on the list that weren't there, Sprint? |

Kurt Vonnegut! Stopped me from going stark raving mad in my teen years.
Cat's Cradle and The Sirens of Titan being standouts. In fact, the fact that they had Hitchhike's Guide to the Galaxy on there without it's obvious influence in Sirens of Titan is a bit of a jip. |

Far From the Maddening crowd i have not read. But Thomas Hardy was a bore ... like his great influence William Wordsworth. But then again, i'm not a fan of Romanticism. |

Easy to list books that were written in the Romantic to Victorian Age. No James Fenimore Cooper? The Spy was one of my all-time fav reads.
Cooper was the god damn appellation of American novelist. America could use a Harvey Birch right now. Oh, and no Thoreau? No god damn Makepeace Thackeray? Hands up. Who here didn't think Laura Bell was one of the best characters ever to be written? No Charles Kingsley? That book was required reading in high school. Love as motive influencing character and determining what action that it exhibited. Ah, Amyas Leigh. I could on and on. Yeah, bugger that list. |

I have never heard of that one. I have "The penguin history of the world" by J.M. I have bookmarked page 30: Chapter "the possibility of civilisation". Then I have the 7 Game of Thrones books to read. Read a few pages of the first book, before putting that aside as a "later in the year" read. My men's book list is as follows: https://content.artofmanliness.com/uploads/100%20must%20read%20books.pdf Once I am through that, perhaps 5 years down the track, I should be well read on a lot of topics. I seem to find that I would understand the world a lot better if I get through the readings. Except, I might leave the bible off the list. That book is becoming more and more irrelevant to me. |

I've read thousands of books in my lifetime but only seven from that list. No mention of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells or Edgar Rice Burroughs. The lesser know works of these men are just as good as the the famous ones. There should be more American authors on their list, Martin Caidin, Clive Cusslar, Vince Flynn and Brad Thor have written excellent stories. Even that shameless liberal Steven King should have been on the list.

lots of "girls" books and arty farty stuff on that list. I've read so many more good books not included. Even at school I got to read "Day of the Triffids", not 1 real sci-fi book on the list. No HG Wells, Jules Verne, John Wyndham, Asimov, Clarke, Moorcock, etc, etc, etc.. Oh wait Dune was on the list. What about some real adventure stories like Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, King Solomon's Mines, etc, etc... Just The 3 Musketeers.... What a sorry list that is. What about.... Thomas, Ludlum, DeMille, Cruz-Smith, Moorcock, Eddings, Rice Burroughs.... What about The History of The Runestaff, The Belgariad |

Totally agree Marla. Most of the stuff I wouldn't have read by choice... but school makes you read lots of crap. |

Interestingly, the BBC never actually made this declaration. The list was created by an unknown individual and spread around the internet as a meme called The BBC Book List Challenge.

Yes there are a few "Goodreads" lists... the Sci-Fi list is equally appalling. |

Only one SciFi writer around nowadays who is worth reading: Neal Stephenson.

My first five-star review: I inhaled Wuthering Heights with my groin In Emerald Fennell’s hands we get the essence of women-directed sex. Sex through the female gaze. What women actually want. It’s dark. It’s filthy. Brace yourselves. Cheeses! |

I've read four.
Attending classes tends to stunt the development of ideas in an inquiring mind... being addicted to academia tends to stifle thought .... it may always give one a few shelves on which to park ideas and thoughts to gather dust, but it is overly focused on what was written before.... and of course many deeply imersed in it gather dust all the time and scarcely know it.... though they know how to use the catch phrases and dystopian reasoning to think they impose their views.... I developed this stance after linking up again with a past GF who had become an 'academic' in the 'social sciences' ...she could offer nothing to the world but pat phrases and empty platitudes that ignored reality... but it's a good living .... |

I think I got to 7 (from the list above) but the list has a few of the worst books ever written. Half the books I did read were not good. This is a great list for people who are up themself or genuine literary snobs. There are a few good books on the list that I have not read. Read 23 from the original list. |

26 for me also!
I loved reading The Faraway Tree collection to the kids at bedtime! Funny thing is I was just thinking of those books lately and wanted to locate them. Some classics like Robinson Crusoe not mentioned. Amelia Jane …. That was one of my fave when younger. Other books of oddity I read before watching the movie (the ones I can remember at moment!) The exorcist. Raise the Titanic. To Sir With Love. The book I received at end of grade 6 was Alice In Wonderland. I still have that somewhere too! In fact, I’ve kept all my high school text books (maths, English, geography, cookery, etc) I’m considering donating to the high school society in our local town where they keep lots of memorabilia of the townships’ history. Oh I’ve also kept my Pitman’s shorthand text books when I went to business college! |

Any such list that doesnt include Homer and the New Testament is deficient.
You cannot understand our civilisation without understanding Greece and Jerusalem. After them, you can have all sorts of lists but they are the source and grounding for them all. |
