It's very good.

100 times better than the John Wayne version.

On Netflix, I think.

Rubbish. John Wayne was my favourite Western Actor.

actually I expect it to improve greatly. I have new cable from the exchange all the way to my house, instead of to a node out on the street.

The problems usually occur when your forced to use the old cable from the node to your house.

The NBN is wonderful.

In three years, I've not had a single problem with it.

Fast, reliable, and relatively cheap.

That's odd.  Fibre or copper?  Either way, if they have cut out the node.....yes, you are looking good.

The Coen Brothers version was quite good. But the original with John Wayne and Kim Darby was probably better.

The dvd of the Magnificent Seven remake sits in front of me right now. I did a swap with dad for a copy of the original. I bought the original with the intent on getting the remake later. But dad did not like the remake very much. A few days after getting the original, I found the four pack for $20 of the first four movies of the Magnificent Seven. Got that as well, and swapped the surplus version for the remake that dad did not want.

That movie had me mesmerised in the 1990s. Had to buy a dvd copy and rewatch it over and over. The band Metallica bought the rights to the song "Ecstacy of gold". The band likes to play it at the start of each of their shows.

Yes I mentioned Dances...  but not The Last of the Mohicans, love the Daniel Day-Lewis one.

Haven't listed any by Randolph Scott but he has many good westerns.

If I had to pick just a handful, they'd be...
El Dorado
The Big Country
The Last of the Mohicans
The Last Wagon
and...
Shane.

Not too fussed about Clint's spaghetti westerns, but Pale Rider was good.

I like quirky Silverado, Cheyenne Autumn, Outlaw Josey Wales, and snuck a look at Jane Got Her Gun with Wynona Ryder - not too bad....

Been sneaking online to watch Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, and Hickock (which was obviously a lead for a series), and a few others.  Saw the new Magnificent Seven...

That's Natalie Portman dude... ;)

I knew that - I was testing you (sorry)

Won't somebody think of Django Unchanged?

I don't really consider it a cowboy movie. More a period piece.

john smith - yes, django was a lefty self loathing  uberviolent piece of rubbish

rubbish. Only a fkkwit would consider a movie about bounty hunting a leftie piece.
Jango was a great movie.

Then again, I've liked all of Tarantinos movies. He has a certain way about him.

I just can't go past Clint Eastwood and his 'spaghetti' Westerns.
Those movies really clinched it for me.
But Heston, Peck, Ford, Stewart, Granger really did great Westerns too.
John Wayne was possibly the most over-rated and even Errol Flynn just didn't cut it much beyond their own 'stardom'.

As for the Magnificent 7?
Well, nothing beats the Seven Samurai original.
Brynner (great Western actor) and McQueen (also great Western actor) really made the Hollywood version respectable - but that was about it, the other characters were pathetic.
The recent Denzil Washington movie was an absolute 'far-fetched' bore. As are most modern movies - 'far-fetched' and 'camera tricks' to hide the fact that we've all just seen it all before.
I love Denzil as an actor. But I am finding it hard to enjoy 'token blackman' movies in 'historical' periods where there weren't really any (like recent Excalibur movie  ::) ).
Do we have 'Token white men' in docos depicting 10,000 ago Aboriginal Australia? :-?
Some movies just try too hard.

I think people love the old Westerns because its as close to the 'simple' way of life back yonder that we all wish we could have experienced, even if for just a holiday.

Did anyone notice in
THE MAN WHO SHOT THE LIBERTY VALANCE
that James Stewart's gun 'shot before' John Wayne's to kill Lee Marvin? Slow the picture down and you will see Stewarts gun go first.
In the movie - John Wayne is the one who apparently killed Marvin first.

Ahh, Lee Marvin - now there was a 'westernised' man if ever there was one.

Alan Ladd's portrayal of a gunslinger hiding out on a farm of Christians and the impressionable young kid who idolises Shane was a great Western

This movie was done in such an understated way, it reached greatness by the very fact that 'it held back' on the violence a powerful, powerful movie

Try and watch Shane, it holds up as well today as when it was made

It will stay in your mind forever

So what's the big deal about Shane?

What made it to be considered the greatest Western of all time?

The Western, if that is what we mean by "Cowboy," is not a genre I am much interested in. There are some exceptions. I would choose "One Eyed Jacks" as my favourite. I thought "The Long Riders" was not bad either. I like productions that make some attempt at period accuracy, but most portray a post a Civil War frontier where every man from drifter to petty thief has at least one expensive revolver, a repeating rifle, a three thousand dollar saddle, and a well groomed horse that is always shod. The horses never have ailments or throw a shoe unless the plot requires it. In fact, horses are continuous problems to their owners.
I thought "Little Big Man" was quite good, but I hated "Dances with Wolves." But the problem with Westerns will always be the cliches. They just don't seem able to make one that does not  insult our intelligence in some way.
Here's a little contemporary anecdote that never gets into the Hollywood versions of the "West." Trappers were the first out there, not the cowboys. They were an uncivilized lot adept at tanning hides. A favourite novelty was to kill a squaw, cut out her genitals, and tan them for a tobacco pouch.
