Title: Climate news
Post by Jovial Monk on May 8th, 2017 at 12:37am
For presenting snippets of climate–related news.

Some actual evidence that the globe is warming and becoming wetter in comments to an article:

One more thing about rain as murder weapon of ice and snow. It has been linked to the decline of caribou . They have evolved to paw through snow, to get the lichens. They have not evolved to break ice to get lichens. When one of these rain events comes along in the winter , they can produce a really thick ice layer on top of a snowpack .

I can think of four other creatures that are facing this same problem . Musk Ox, buffalo, mice, and owls.
This idea of rain falling where it shouldn’t, and when it shouldn’t , is a real biological feedback loop , as well as a geophysical feedback loop.

bostonblorp  /  May 2, 2017
Mass death of reindeer attributed to too much snow and ice for them to paw through.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/reindeer-dead-climate-change_us_5832bda6e4b058ce7aabe78e

“In both cases, the animals appeared to have died due to abnormally thick layers of snow and ice in their habitat, which made it impossible for them to access the lichen and other vegetation on which they survive.

Without anything to eat, the deer died en masse.”

Thanks for the link, BB. It really is amazing how many big and little things just a few degrees of temperature departure can change. Bob’s been covering the impacts to reindeer from freezing rain locking up their available food sources in the comments here for a number of years now. I think this began to crop up as a noticeable issue in the mid 2000s. But the frequency of such events recently has been considerably higher.

https://robertscribbler.com/2017/05/01/early-greenland-melt-spike-possible-as-forecast-calls-for-temperatures-of-up-to-50-f-above-average/

So, no Ice Age for a looooong time.

The U.S. is on a hot streak like no other. April marked yet another month where record highs outpaced record lows.

It’s the 29th month in a row with the odds tipped in favor of record highs, 10 months longer than the previous stretch where highs beat lows in 2011-12. Embedded within the historic warm streak are a series of records-setting records.

Every month of 2015 and 2016 saw more highs than lows, making them two of the only three calendar years that’s happened. The record high-to-low ratio this February was 49-to-1, making it the most lopsided month ever recorded (besting a record set in November 2016, no less).

The monthly record stretch belies a larger trend where the ratio of record highs to lows has been growing disproportionately with each passing decade. That’s due largely to rising background temperatures driven by increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

AGW has a lot of data behind it.

Some estimates I have seen say it could be 30,000 years to the next major Ice Age.

Hope you voted in my “why people deny AGW” poll?

In the meantime, ’Erbert look at this bit of data:

"A new model that predicts the solar cycles more accurately than ever before has suggested that solar magnetic activity will drop by 60 percent between 2030 and 2040, which means in just 15 years’ time, Earth could sink into what researchers are calling a mini ice age. "

Greenland ice melt so far in 2017:

http://nsidc.org/greenland-today/greenland-surface-melt-extent-interactive-chart/

So far, and we are only at the start of the melt season, the 2017 melt looks bigger than the record 2012 melt.

Arctic sea ice extent:

As the Arctic sea ice cover decreases more and more sunlight hits dark ocean and is absorbed, warming the ocean. This is why AGW is happening much faster in the Arctic than in the rest of the globe.

Yeah, Mum is the same plus she has the thin skin of the aged—she is 96. She is also on blood thinners after a mild heart attack a few years ago.

Why not get some duck down jackets or vests? Real warmth without weight. Kathmandu advertises on Ebay and have some real specials there and you can go to an actual Kathmandu store to fit them on and get them at the Ebay price.

I'm thinking of ripping off the down my chickens have developed for the winter season ... hot wax their arse area where most of the fluffy stuff is.  8-)

I'm sure they won't mind going bare-arsed just for one winter. I mean, hey, what are friends for - right?

Warming continues in March.

We did have that very warm winter and early–mid spring in the US. This would have affected snow and ice cover too—see last para.

Quote:
Warming does it again. Climate reports for March show that the steady march ever-upward in land and sea temperatures kept on keepin' on. Highlights from the NOAA State of the Climate Report are below.

The March temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.89 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average of 54.9 degrees F. This was the second-highest for March in the 138-year period of record, behind 2016 by 0.32 degree F. This was the first time the monthly temperature departure from average surpassed 1.80 deg F (1.0 deg Celsius) in the absence of an El Nino episode in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

(NOTE: The near-2 degree Fahrenheit above the 20th century average is a LEAP, not a STEP -- above the average. BA)

The March globally averaged land surface temperature was 3.56 deg F above the 20th century average of 40.8 deg F. This value was also the second highest March land global temperature in the 1880-2017 record, trailing 2016 by 0.68 deg F. March 2017 had the highest monthly global land temperature departure from average of any month since March 2016 and the third-highest land monthly temperature departure among all months (1,647) on record. (NOTE: Three and one-half degrees Fahrenheit is again a LEAP above average. BA)

The March globally averaged sea surface temperature was 1.28 deg F above the 20th century monthly average of 60.7 deg F -- the second-highest global ocean temperature for March in the record, behind the record year 2016 by 0.18 deg F. This was the highest global ocean temperature departure from average since October 2016 (+1.30 deg F).

March Snow Cover and Sea Ice
According to data from NOAA analyzed by the Rutgers Global Snow Lab, the Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent during March was near average at 20,000 square miles below the 1981-2010 average. This was the 24th smallest value in the 51-year period of record. The North American snow cover extent was the 20th smallest on record, while the Eurasian snow cover extent was near the middle of the record.

Glaciers in South America are retreating:

Quote:
The glaciers that supply much of Santiago’s water over the hot, dry summer months shrunk by a quarter to 380 square kilometers in the 30 years to 2013/14, according to a study by the Universidad de Chile. The melt will accelerate if the South American nation sees more record breaking heatwaves as global warming increases. Eventually, the shrinking glaciers may force the citizens of Santiago to follow their counterparts in southern California and give up their green lawns and swimming pools. . . .

The Echaurren Norte glacier above the Laguna Negra reservoir has shrunk in height by the equivalent of 20 meters of water over the past 40 years, according to the government’s Water Directorate. That standard measure for glaciers means that the height of the ice has been reduced by about 25 meters since 1976. . . .

Yup, big wildfires in Chile last summer, another consequence of AGW which increases the wildfire season and makes fires bigger and more destructive—and adds yet more CO2 to the atmosphere.

More signs of warming:

Quote:
While the problem in the future may be too little water, right now it is too much. Rains high up in the mountains, which would normally fall as snow under colder temperatures, have triggered devastating landslides and floods, clogging up water treatment plants and cutting supplies to much of Santiago twice already this year.

Chilean glacier melts during summer.Source: Chilean Center for Scientific Studies (CECs)
"As glaciers melt and rains increase in winter, there will be more water in rivers over the short term," Rivera said. "But we will also be seeing an increase of risky geological phenomenon such as landslides and mudslides."

At least five people were killed in February when a deluge of water, rocks and uprooted trees poured through the town of San Jose de Maipo with little warning.

The situation may be even more critical in neighboring Bolivia where glaciers have shrunk by 43 percent in 20 years, according to research by Manchester Metropolitan University. The study said new lakes have appeared as a consequence of the melting and at least 25 of them are at risk of causing floods or mudslides.

It's cyclical ... usually lasting for around 800 years, and in the Middle Ages they had a mini-Ice Age.

It's all happened before, many many times. If you want to worry about a global disaster, then you might like to turn your attention to an asteroid hitting the Earth just as one nearly did a few weeks ago. A whopper slipped past us at a hair's breadth in astronomical terms. "Whoosh!" Made the palm trees sway for a moment.

And then nuclear weapons delivery systems in the hands of Islamic terrorists and nutters like Kim Jong-un.

That's FAR more scary than the 'Climate Change' nonsense.

Lots of US states experiencing unusual to record warmth:

Quote:
For a swath of states from New Mexico over to Florida and up to Ohio, 2017 has been the hottest year on record through April. For the Lower 48 as a whole, the year is the second warmest in records going back to 1895.

State temperature ranks for January through April 2017. Red states were record warm for the year to date.

Several states in the mid-Atlantic had their hottest April on record and a few Southeastern states were near-record warm, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data released Monday.

The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. through April was 43.7°F (6.5°C), 4.5°F (2.5°C) above the 20th century average, NOAA said. This put the four-month period behind only 2012, which saw major heat waves and drought across much of the central part of the nation.

The exceptional heat of February is what’s keeping 2017 so high in the rankings, Jake Crouch, a NOAA climatologist, said in an email. With eight months left, though, it is unclear whether 2017 will stay warm enough to ultimately beat 2012 as the hottest calendar year for the Lower 48.

Of course, Dubyne will cover this article in his next video  :D :D :D

Quote:
“I think that the potential development of the El Niño and how the drought conditions expand or intensify going into summer will be the two things to watch on determining how warm 2017 ultimately ends up being,” Crouch said. The current forecast slightly favors the development of El Niño in late summer or fall.

AGW has a role to play in this:

Quote:
Two natural climate patterns, called the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation, were in phases that tend to bring warm conditions to the eastern U.S., Crouch said. The phases of those patterns have just switched, bringing the much cooler conditions of the last couple weeks.

But rising global temperatures have also titled the balance in favor of more record heat. April was the 29th month in a row where heat records outpaced cold records in the U.S., the longest such stretch in the books and 10 months longer than the previous record stretch. Of the five longest such streaks, four have occurred since 1998 (in a stable climate, record heat and record cold would be roughly even over time).

Global 'warming' by way of Islam's ever-increasing presence in Western countries through immigration and birth-rate is a far greater threat to our civilisation than our winters becoming a little less cold.
