You are right. I suppose the US thought Saddam was a threat to their safety. I can understand that to a degree. North Korea wants to take over another nation so it can become more powerful. It's not much of an excuse. I'd hope that if that was happening to us somebody would come to our aid.

There's an economic part of this saga. This whole thing is obviously being fuelled by China . China wants to control asia. That's a no brainer. I'd say the states doesn't want to lose it's economic and strategic position in asia. If South Korea goes down then could come Japan.

Nuclear non-proliferation has only worked in one state's case - South Africa.   It had five nuclear weapons and it dismantled them when it saw the writing was on the wall about Apartheid.   Better to get rid of the nukes than allow them to fall into what it perceived as the "wrong hands".   ::)

Not too sure about how fragile he is but he doesn't want to lose the most important thing to him - the approval of his people - the "mandate from heaven" as they used to call it in Imperial China.   Without that, Kim Jung Un is just a fat little man with a bad hair cut.   How will he lose it?  By using nuclear weapons.   His father and his grand father worked that out - you can shake Washington but you cannot topple it.   Trump OTOH has still to work out that the most effective weapon against Un is to ignore him.   Let him shout and stamp his feet.  Use your own nukes to deter his nukes.  Use your missiles to deter his missiles.   Demonstrate to him that you can strike anywhere in the DPRK at any time.   But basically treat his antics with the contempt they deserve.

The situation could easily become the one you describe, but it is not quite there yet. NK has not demonstrated ICBM capability, so the best they could do is detonate a nuclear weapon in their own area. Maybe SK or Japan. That would piss everyone off, and end Kim's regime. The other thing is the comparison with Iran. Both countries are mountainous which could bog down any invasion. All the other countries you mention, are open to a field campaign.

I think whether it is a good idea to let this guy get nukes is the more important issue. Whatever vapid point you are trying to make about the US, sacrificing nuclear nonproliferation to make it is a step backwards.
