Yep I'd always go for a straight Shiraz before anything but the varieties I mentioned. Very smooth variety.

Malbec is added to smooth wine. But Shiraz has flavor and authority, just need a good winery and some age.
Cabernet has that “tobacco leaf” flavor that I don’t like much, that is where malbec or merlot blended into the cabernet is good. I prefer shiraz for red wines and riesling/semillon/sauvignon blanc for whites. Chardonne nope tho one or two unwooded ones have been good. Fiano is an Italian white wine variety being planted as it can take the increasing temperatures, e.g. on the floor of the Barossa Valley, and still give a balanced wine, fruit flavor and sugar yet also acidity to balance. Didn’t like the first couple times I tried fiano wines but at the Open Day for Saltram No 1 Club members we had fiano with one of the courses at lunch and it was very nice, nice flavor and good structure to the wine. Another good grape is pinot noir but it needs to come from a real cold area. I tried two while I was in Tassie last September, one from the west Tamar and one from the east coast. Very nice—but I would not taste an SA pinot noir. Really needs cold weather. High vineyards, in what is left of the Hunter or in Tassie. |

Pinot Noir from Tuck's Ridge.
Tasting Notes Deep garnet with a slightly pink rim. The nose has an effortless combination of cherries of all types, toast, plums and red fruits. The palate is intense, complex and super long with multiple layers of fine grained tannins. At 3 years of age, it is showing some savoury elements as well. This is a great wine in a great place but the true rewards will come for those who are patient enough to wait for another 5 to 20 years. Hand picked, crushed and pressed. 30% new French Oak. I've had Tuck's Ridge Pinot Noir many times - it can't be beaten - even the finest French wines don't compare to it. It goes down so smoothly with a wonderful aftertaste. It's strong yet the flavor is always there with a wonderful bouquet. It's dry & not a horrible sugary sweet wine. |
Title: Re: Your favourite red wine variety Post by Sir Bobby on Apr 18th, 2017 at 12:05am
By the way Jovial -
bogans like you would never have even tasted a good Pinot Noir - so go put your comments elsewhere. |
Title: Re: Your favourite red wine variety Post by Amadd on Apr 18th, 2017 at 12:11am
I'm not regularly a purchaser of wines much over the $30 mark except for special occasions because after the first bottle, they all taste good..haha.
But I came across a nice special at liquorland that gives you a regular Pepperjack shiraz + a premium cut Pepperjack Shiraz Cabernet for $40. No probs if some don't like a cabernet blend, but I really liked the premium cut Pepperjack and would consider paying the regular price of $37 for it. I'd recommend the premium cut Pepperjack for a good take out wine that not many would have any complaints about. |

Well, that’s better!
I tasted two good pinot noirs while in Tassie. I never bother tasting pinot noir wines here in SA, even the Adelaide Hills are too warm. Still waiting for that apology, Booby! |

A good Cabernet can be made by any clown manufacturer. It's the easiest wine to make. It's the safest bet if you buy a cheap wine. |

I'm not a wine connoisseur by any means. Pepperjack is a Barossa wine which gives me a bit of a green light. Produced just next to Saltram from my finding. I think Pepperjack is a bit of "stock standard" like a Wolfblass. I wish I had taken more notice of some of the nice wines I've tasted over the years, but alas, by the time I'd distinguished different tastes, I'd forgotten the name of the wine. I might say that since I've been taking a bit of notice, wines from the Marananga region of the Barossa stand out as being particularly tasty. Personal taste of course. Sometimes then I taste a Californian, or a Chilean wine and I think that Barossa wines are getting a bit boring. |
Title: Re: Your favourite red wine variety Post by Jovial Monk on Apr 18th, 2017 at 1:03am
Yup, Saltram. They bought the Wolf Blass winery and do their winemaking there.
They also have a beer made for them that includes some shiraz must in the wort. Sounds ghastly but is actually pretty good, for now and then drinking. |
Title: Re: Your favourite red wine variety Post by Amadd on Apr 18th, 2017 at 1:38am
Ahh I see.
As interesting as it is, wines can be such a complex and self-absorbed exploit that I have neither the time nor the taste buds for. Getting a taste for fine wines seems to me to be getting absorbed in my own self-uselessness. Taste it, like it, drink it. That's enough for me. Looking for easy opinions of what is a likeable drop is all. Torbrac has some really good stuff. |
Title: Re: Your favourite red wine variety Post by Jovial Monk on Apr 18th, 2017 at 2:37am
I was really into wine in the 70s and 80s, frequent trips to the Barossa and Southern Vales even Langhorne Creek and Clare Valley, bit less frequent to Coonawarra. One trip to Brisbane to see a mate then to Sydney and back via Rutherglen was a wine marathon: Murrumbidgee IA on the way up then Hunter Valley on the way to Sydney then Brown Bros in the Rutherglen area on the way home. Cases of wine arrived for a couple of weeks.
Then I switched to beer and from that home brewing, couple batches made from kits, underwhelming in taste, then learning to “mash” part mash and full mash. Got into the history of beer styles, much more interesting than the history of wine. Be meeting up some family in Naracoorte next week, will ensure I get to Coonawarra and do a little bit of tasting and buying: Coonawarra isn’t far from Naracoorte. Want to visit Redman winery at least and Wynn’s if I can make it. Redmans used to have the Rouge Homme winery and vineyards. They sold that but had another vineyard and winery and trade as Redman which is what Rouge Homme means, red man :) They only make reds as do Noons in the Southern Vales. |

When I was a young man, and trying to get kissed as often as possible, I once drank a whole glass flagon of something that was red. I think they called it claret in those days.

Easy drinking red it is.
You know, when arguing with you I always know you will start lying. That is why I always win. You need cold to make a good Pinot Noir, Tassie cold. The Tasmanian Pinot Noirs are beyond compare. Tucker is cheap plonk I suppose? |

Yes. You lied in the Environmental board so I don’t see why you wouldn’t be lying now.
Pinot noir needs cold to develop its flavor and that is why Tassie pinots are tops. |

Just so as you know. Aldi have just got this lovely little Cote du Rhône Villages ( or vin ordinaire if you will).
Very acceptable drop, I've just had half a bottle. Plan de Dieu, Chateau de something. I wouldn't tell you if it wasn't worth the money. |
