Title: Alfie targeted by trolls Post by bogarde73 on Apr 7th, 2017 at 10:17am
Sir Michael Caine hailed Brexit as a vote for freedom from rule by ‘faceless civil servants’ yesterday.
But while some praised the 84-year-old film star for his ‘sane’ views that ‘hit the nail on the head’, he faced a torrent of abuse from Remain-supporting internet trolls who branded him an ‘old and senile bigot’. Sir Michael said he was confident leaving the EU would be ‘all right’, adding: ‘I voted for Brexit. What it is with me, I’d rather be a poor master than a rich servant. ‘It wasn’t about the racism, immigrants or anything – it was about freedom.’ Speaking to Sky News, he added: ‘Politics is always chaotic. In politics, you’re always going into areas you’ve never been before, so you’re going to get lost and then you’re going to find your way, and then it’ll be all right.’ The Italian Job actor came out in support of leaving the EU before last year’s referendum, leading former Ukip leader Nigel Farage to recall his famous line from the film and proclaim: ‘Let’s blow the bloody doors off!’ In the run-up to the vote, Sir Michael admitted quitting the EU would be ‘scary’ but said the UK should not be dictated to by ‘thousands of faceless civil servants’. |

Exactly. The best thing he ever made and one of the finest Brit films of an era that produced many such.

I think the business of giving actors and actresses Knighthoods and Damehoods is utterly ridiculous.

Don't agree.
Our creative people are every bit as deserving of honours as businessmen, scientists and certainly most politicians. It is a recognition of how the great ones have enriched our lives. However I do believe honours are much too extravagantly handed out. Look at the Australia Day honours list - it's like the bloody phonebook. |

You old closet Socialist, you. Those people are actors who perform other people's work. They are puppets. 'Sir' this, and 'Sir' that ~ it's totally ruined the illustrious status that a knighthood once conferred upon exceptional people. The one-time honorable gravitas and weighty seriousness of knighthoods has been reduced to popular culture and a toy at the bottom of the Corn Flakes packet. I believe even one of the Beetles was given a knighthood. What utter sacrilege. And then we have 'Sir Michael Caine' ... !!! ;D ;D ;D How bloody ridiculous is that?! You're out of the closet now, Bogey. Expect Marla to start propositioning you soon. :-* |

We'll agree to differ. You clearly don't get the same experience from a great performance by say an Emma Thompson as I do. As I said, too many honours are handed out, but the really great contributors to the arts, over a long time, are as worthy of recognition as an ex PM or anybody else. |

These very ordinary people get lots of awards and trophies to put on the mantlepiece and hang on the walls at home ~ but a knighthood from the Queen? I'm amazed that an old codger like you isn't as outraged by this trivialising of knighthoods as I am. I would rather the Queen knighted just one leading surgeon in a Burns Unit than a hundred rock 'n' roll homosexual and drug addict 'stars'. ... than a hundred actors and actresses who work nothing like the hardworking people in factories, coal mines, supermarkets and shift workers. Paul McCartney Bob Geldof Elton John ... ;D ;D ;D Bono Mick Jagger ... ;D ;D ;D Tom Jones Roger Moore Rolf Harris Sir Michael Moore ... ;D ;D ;D I mean, fair dinkum cobber. Knighthoods have been reduced to the ridiculous. Next, they'll be handing them out to porn stars. |

I wouldn't give you two bob for the people on your list there, except for Paul McCartney who has been a giant in popular music of the last 50 years.
You seem to be deliberately ignoring my point, which is, if you are going to have honours at all, creative people - and that includes great actors - are as worthy as anybody else of being recognised. |

Alfie is entitled to his opinion, nobody has to agree with him. Apparently going back to the 1850's is achievable in the UK.
I think that his saying he is willing to take the pain in order to be free but it isn't exactly him who will have to pay that price is it. What he should have said was that he is ok for other people to take the pain so that he could have the false perception of freedom. |

You're not listening. I'm all for these sort of people receiving public acclaim with lots of statuettes and engraved trophies to sit on the mantlepiece - but not royal knighthoods. Knighthoods should be few and far between and reserved only for recipients who have achieved something quite extraordinary for the benefit of mankind. A cure for Parkinson's / multiple sclerosis / migraines / certain cancers / Alzheimers / pillow-biting / etc. Air travel that reduces the 24 hours to London to only 4 hours. Restoring sight / hearing / mobility / etc. Paul McCartney? Dear Jesus, give me strength. 'Yellow Submarine' and other Nursery Rhymes. You're off my Christmas Card list for this year, Bogey. We'll have to disagree to agree. :P |
