Title: Mass coral bleaching for 2nd year in a row Post by The_Barnacle on Mar 13th, 2017 at 10:14am
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority today (10 March 2017) confirmed mass coral bleaching is occurring on the Great Barrier Reef for the second consecutive year.
Mass coral bleaching is moderate to severe bleaching over a large spatial scale — the bleaching is part of an ongoing global event affecting the world’s coral reefs since 2014. On 9 March 2017 experts from the Marine Park Authority spent six hours flying over the Reef between Townsville and Cairns, alongside researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science. The first aerial survey of the Reef for 2017 found severe bleaching in offshore reefs from north of Ingham to the northern extent of the survey near Cairns. This year more bleaching is being observed in this central part of the Reef, which last year escaped widespread severe bleaching. http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/media-room/coral-bleaching That's a big worry that we've now had 2 years in a row. Coral can generally regenerate after a single bleaching event, but if thy kep happening the coral will die. |

BoM don't seem to be showing anything abnormal for this time of year for sea temperatures. I wonder what caused it?

Of course the corals should be the sub-surface temperatures, not SST.

You do know sub-surface merely means below the surface? The 150m that BoM refers to is simply the depth at which they measure, to ensure conformity. Now if wiki is to be believed - "Sea surface temperature (SST) is the water temperature close to the ocean's surface. The exact meaning of surface varies according to the measurement method used, but it is between 1 millimetre (0.04 in) and 20 metres (70 ft) below the sea surface." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_surface_temperature |

Oh, dear. I omitted a piece from wiki- "There are several difficulties with satellite-based absolute SST measurements. First, in infrared remote sensing methodology the radiation emanates from the top "skin" of the ocean, approximately the top 0.01 mm or less, which may not represent the bulk temperature of the upper meter of ocean due primarily to effects of solar surface heating during the daytime, reflected radiation, as well as sensible heat loss and surface evaporation." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_surface_temperature So you see it is a true measure of Sea SURFACE Temperature and shouldn't be used to justify bleaching. |

No cyclones on the horizon to relieve the Great Barrier Reef from coral bleaching
THE weather needed to cool down the Great Barrier Reef to prevent further coral bleaching appears to be staying well away from the Far North. The Bureau of Meteorology says sea temperatures that have caused coral bleaching in several tourism hot spots between Cairns and Townsville are likely to rise in coming days, potentially worsening the natural phenomenon. It is the second summer in a row the Reef has undergone a mass bleaching event, which could result in large-scale coral dieback. http://www.cairnspost.com.au/news/cairns/no-cyclones-on-the-horizon-to-relieve-the-great-barrier-reef-from-coral-bleaching/news-story/796e3de5ef030d7d08cf8c28f8066d49 |

Once again you are wrong lee The BOM has specifically developed the ReefTemp Next Generation system to measure the water temperature of the GBR. It has a grid size of 0.02 x 0.02 degrees, uses a "night" system which avoids observations that are affected by daily surface warming caused by solar heating and solar glare effects. It also removes cloud affected data. http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/bulletins/apob101.pdf So yes i am confident that the satellite data is providing accurate data and is relevant for coral that is meters below the surface. The onus is on you lee I have provided evidence of another mass coral bleaching event. Coral bleaching events are primarily caused by increased sea temperatures. I have provided evidence that the sea temperatures are warmer than normal. If you don't believe the bleaching event is caused by overheating then the onus is on you to explain what is causing the coral bleaching. |

Yeah. From "stitching together" multiple passes. "For each satellite pass, a SST is calculated (this is known as the Level 2 product) which adheres to the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) data processing specifications v2.0 [Paltouglou et al., 2010; Casey et al., 2011]. Then a new level 3 collated (L3C) product is created from a combination of multiple swaths from a single sensor. Finally, a super-collated, multi-sensor, multi-swath gridded product (L3S) at 0.02°x 0.02° spatial resolution is produced to give “Night” and “Day” compositions , also called IMOS SST." Torture the data long enough it will confess. The error bars must be huge. "RTNG uses the “Night” IMOS SST which is calibrated to the ocean skin temperature, providing an estimate of the ocean temperature to a depth of 10-20μm. " So it measures the SST to a maximum depth of about 1/50th of a millimeter. And yet you are confident that is a realistic estimation of depths to 20 Metres. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D The_Barnacle wrote on Mar 20th, 2017 at 10:21am:
As explained before coral bleaching can occur due to sudden changes in temperature both up and down. It does not need to be high temperatures. |

No, you won’t.
Anytime a discussion gets interesting you derail it. Ajax might get involved but he just posts his little lucky charms aka denier videos/charts and can be ignored. You get in there and derail discussion. |

A new perspective on GBR coral bleaching.
"It is puzzling why the recent 2017 publication in Nature, Global Warming And Recurrent Mass Bleaching Of Corals by Hughes et al. ignored the most critical factor affecting the 2016 severe bleaching along the northern Great Barrier Reef – the regional fall in sea level amplified by El Niño. Instead Hughes 2017 suggested the extensive bleaching was due to increased water temperatures induced by CO2 warming. In contrast in Coral Mortality Induced by the 2015–2016 El-Niño in Indonesia: The Effect Of Rapid Sea Level Fall by Ampou 2017, Indonesian biologists had reported that a drop in sea level had bleached the upper 15 cm of the reefs before temperatures had reached NOAA’ Coral Reef Watch’s bleaching thresholds. As discussed by Ampou 2017, the drop in sea level had likely been experienced throughout much of the Coral Triangle including the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and then accelerated during the El Niño. They speculated sea level fall also contributed to the bleaching during the 1998 El Niño. Consistent with the effects of sea level fall, other researchers reported bleaching in the GBR was greatest near the surface then declined rapidly with depth. Indeed if falling sea level was the main diver in 2016’s reef mortalities, and this can be tested, then most catastrophic assertions made by Hughes 2017 would be invalid." "Although Hughes 2017 suggests the pattern of recurring bleaching is simply a function of temperature and global warming, as illustrated in Hughes’ Figure “e” below, recurring bleaching is not a global phenomenon. (Black dots represent reefs that bleached during all 3 surveys: 1998, 2002, 2016; light gray represents reefs that bleached only once, and dark gray reefs bleached twice.) ." https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/04/05/falling-sea-level-the-critical-factor-in-2016-great-barrier-reef-bleaching/ "Guest essay by Jim Steele Director emeritus Sierra Nevada Field Campus, San Francisco State University and author of Landscapes & Cycles: An Environmentalist’s Journey to Climate Skepticism" |

Giant fans to cool water and reduce heat stress on the Great Barrier Reef will be trialled from early next year and partially funded by a $2.2 million Turnbull government investment.
