i've heard this claim a few times. what was it that was so bad about it? it's reasonably talented - a mixture of funk and groove bass, mixture of jazz and rock drums, wind section, okay guitar licks, pitch and harmony in the vocals. i know rock and punk musicians hated it, but that seems to be more of 'taste' judgement than a criticism of the musicianship. it sh*ts all over almost anything released today. since about the late 80s early 90s, it's become mostly about electronic sampling, pasting pre-programmed samples from a computer. now that is not talent.

some disco can be more complex than the rock music around at the time. ac/dc for example were/are very simplistic, so was the punk music like sex pistols. that said, i am not sure disco can hold a candle to bands like deep purple and led zeppelin.
