For those who know about Section 18C, chances are it's because of Alex Wood. In 2014, Alex had a secret case made against him by the Human Rights Commission because of a Facebook post. Turns out the complainant, Cindy Prior, was so upset that she went on stress leave. Oh and she also sought $250,000 in damages. Despite the case being thrown out, Alex has been ordered to pay $41,000 in legal costs to Ms. Prior. All because she was upset about what someone else wrote on Facebook. The Liberal Democrats object to 18C. It restricts a key pillar of our democracy – freedom of speech. What gets misunderstood is that society needs to debate ideas, not censor them. The longer that 18C exists, the more we prioritise feelings over ideas and damage our society. I urge those who support our liberal democracy to come together to support Alex in this ordeal. A class of 'jurisprudence' here - even when you win, you lose. This is an absolute disgr ce. If he won the case he should tell her to stick her court costs - she started it, let her pay for it.
I trust he is appealing.. a simple writ on natural justice should suffice, and it's time the judiciary woke up and stopped trying to play Solomon - they are there to make a positive decision one way or the other - not mealy-mouth about it and tut-tut over the poor girl. I had a Queensland copper in training try to sting me with a PCA charge - he accompanied it with the 'other' charge of 'driving under the influence', just in case he couldn't sustain that PCA. As it turned out, he couldn't - but the judge then decided she'd play Solomon and say I was guilty of the secondary even though the 'scientific' test didn't stand... and even though the 'evidence' was that I had an empty beer carton in the back of the car... LMAO... a cardboard box to carry stuff? What utter nonsense. |

What rubbish .... she would have had her case funded by the Aboriginal Legal Service .... so he would be paying them. She bought a frivolous case against this man that was thrown out ........... she should have been charged for making the vexatious complaint. If anything she - the loser - should be paying his legal fees. Our judiciary & system can be complete asses. |

That's impressive. They have nearly raised the money already.
