They are just trying to "cope" with this harsh world.
Because they are in resistance to the undeniable fact that the world is a fairly harsh place and life is inherently unfair, they are in resistance to reality and they cannot see the abundance and opportunity staring them in the face.

sure, the idea of giving in order to recieve is a main part of nearly all religions but a rightard accepts this as a fact of how life works, regardless of theology.
But a leftie is in scarcity. he sees resources as scarce, he sees success as scarce. And he thinks that if someone has more then him, then that guy has somehow scammed him.

Not just in America but the world over.

Imagine what a better world we would live in if if children weren't told from birth that they were sinful creatures destined for hell.

"Faith" is child abuse.

Teaching a child to uncritically accept religious "tenants" is teaching them not to think. It is teaching them that belief, without evidence is acceptable. This damages a child's ability to reason. Additionally telling them that normal behaviour is sinful and you get a clear pattern of psychological abuse.

This dance has been done before.  Two things will happen:

Thr critics will:

A) wildly overestimate that which can be "taught" to average joe.  My favourite is the belief that anyone and everyone can be "taught to think critically". 

b) make sweeping generslisations about "religious" people while displaying every single hallmark of religious faith in their own beliefs.
