In a Trade War with Mexico, Mexico has way more to lose than does the USA.

If Americans just refused to buy 10% of their yearly average purchases of Mexican goods, Mexico would lose close to $20+ Billion in income. (Conservatively, America had a   $6+ Billion   trade deficit   with Mexico in just 2016)

A Tariff on Mexican goods the magnitude many are talking about (+/- 30%) would cost way more than that to Mexico, so in the end it would probably make way more economic sense for Mexico to pay a mere few $$ billion for the WALL (quietly & secretly to save face), rather than see tariffs imposed, & Americans turn away from Mexican products.

you seem to think that there is never any negative or adverse consquences of such things. Trump obviously thinks the same way.  A lot of automotive components come from Mexico and now... they will all be 20% more expensive. So are mexican built cars. You think the consumer is going to be thrilled with a sudden 10-20% increase in the cost of vehicles?

and like it or not, Mexico is an enormous market for Amercain goods which with a 20% tariff would suddenly be cheaper to get from elsewhere.

The point is that EVERYBODY loses. The fact that mexico might lose more will be no comfort to the hundreds of thousands of yanks who would lose ther jobs as a result.

The Mexican Border situation has been a bleeding wound that has been unsolvable for decades in spite of the best efforts of U.S. authorities

It is not hundreds or even a few thousand illegals that cross into the U.S. each year, it is tens of thousands. And as quickly as they are removed even more take their place. Mexico has been a feeding funnel for disaffected people in Central America.

They funnel through Mexico which only has enchiladas going for them to try and make it into the 'Green Zone the Target' the U.S. of A.

Mexico is incapable of stopping the thousands of would be U.S. citizens , they don't affect Mexico much because Mexico has nothing to offer.

The U.S. is the prize. Thus far an over stretched Border Force hasn't been able to stem the human tide, that means that another approach is needed and fast.

So he's building a wall. Don't know if that will work but the Berlin Wall sure as hell worked not many got through there

The Berlin wall was exceedingly short and armed guards along the entire length. Try doing that along 2000 miles. You will need ten thousand troops at a billion dollars a year or more.
