Title: Hows it that Bogans can now afford $600,000 houses
Post by Lord Herbert on Feb 1st, 2017 at 8:49am
New neighbours have moved in next to me. She walks around her backyard in a nightgown, bare feet, and a cigarette hanging from her lips. The property was bought for just under $600,000. The couple are in their early 30's I would say.

I believe in the last 10 years or so a lot of old folk have died, with the consequence that their offspring have benefitted from Wills to effect that properties are now being bought by young bums-and-stiffs who otherwise would probably be renting for the rest of their lives.

Did you mean $1 600 000?

That's how much a knock down shack costs in Sydney these days.

Bogan/out of Sydney areas....you're looking at about a million.

You must be living in some other state.

NB I'm talking house on land.

Then again, plenty of room full family from Pakistan,.

Maybe Herbs lot is slightly higher and low fences?

Damn I miss my old unit in Bondi. The backpacker chicks next door had no curtains and weren't shy.

Who cares about fences?

If they're bogans then what's wrong with them living in a cheap 600K house? They're exactly where they should be  :P

I mean who's heard of a 600K house?  Even units cost more these days.

;D

Good one.

Bogans or not I'm glad they've got lucky and don't have to waste their working lives paying rent.

I've seen the elderly parents of one of them come for little visits, so it's my guess they didn't even have to wait for the old folks to die.

The priority on our new NSW Premier's agenda list is 'Affordable Housing', so let's wish her 'Good Luck' with that one.

Needless to say, all it needs is for developers to stop building two-storey mansions on every 1/4 acre block that becomes available to them.

I've confessed before that I'm living in Boganville where every second person is well known to the police, and the other 'second every person' simply hasn't been caught yet ....

The closer you get to the Sydney CBD, the fewer the front lawns you see, and the more concrete there is in whichever direction you look. I far prefer the grass and the trees and the flocks of galahs and cockatoos out here than the Concrete Jungle where even those ancient terrace houses cost over a million.

Most likely 500 of the 600k is a mortgage, on a 30+ year term.  Thats not considered a big deal these days.

Good thinking - you may very well be right, but the frequent visits by the retired parents would suggest otherwise. I think the old folk may have bought this for the young couple to avoid being hit by the new assets test for the Aged pension.

We're living in the age of million dollar mortgages now.

Actually, it's been like that here in Sydney for over a decade.

Most likely 500 of the 600k is a mortgage, on a 30+ year term.  Thats not considered a big deal these days.

Hate to say it...but you're absolutely correct.

We're living in the age of million dollar mortgages now.

Actually, it's been like that here in Sydney for over a decade.

Parking spots regularly go for $400k

If you have a unit in the appropriate area but with no parking.....it would be worth the investment IMO.

Not at all surprised by this.

Back in the mid 90's we owned a unit in that area.

It was a 2 bedder with ocean views. It unfortunately had no off street parking. I hated living there for a number of reasons.

Coming home after a tough day at the office...I spent half an hr chasing a parking spot so I could get into my home. Plus I found it too claustrophobic....nowhere to hang my washing except a verandah. Within 6 months, we were out of there. I was expecting and it became clear the place was not going to work for us. We needed a REAL HOME.

Anyway...we bought it for 250K.

We then put a new kitchen and bathroom in it.....painted it white and polished its floors whilst we looked around for a garage to come up for sale within the unit complex. Those renovations cost us around $50K.

We were eventually able to secure a car SPACE not a GARAGE. It had its own CT....and cost us $60K.

After the divorce.....my ex was given the unit.

NB. I was given the matrimonial home.

That unit's current worth?

$1.2 million.

NB. Original investment : $420K?

Fast forward 20 yrs : $1.2 million.

Off street parking played a role in this equation.

Without it...the unit would be worth far less.

Anyway....
