Trump didn't fire him, Obama let him go, but Obama had to dismiss him. The other National Guard Chiefs are appointed by their governors, while the DC NG chief is appointed by the President. All Obama appointees are dismissed as of the moment President Trump is sworn in.
It's not a big deal; Trump can request the Maryland or Virginia NG chief assist with smooth transition to his new appointee.

I'm guessing a newly sworn-in President can reappoint a previous term-of-government office holder immediately after inauguration?

Didn't Obama do this with many Bush Administration TOG Pentagon officials?
