10 Ways Your Social Justice Work Might Be Inaccessible and Elitist (And Why That’s a Problem)

I’m an artist first. But I decided long ago that my art would be in the service of fighting oppression.

Since then, I’ve waded more deeply into social justice spaces, and I find myself surrounded more and more by people professing these same aspirations.

Being in these spaces has been therapeutic in so many ways and has created some of the best support systems I could ask for.

It’s comforting not to have to constantly explain yourself and your work. It’s beautiful to learn from and be around folks who understand ideas like microaggressions, gaslighting, white fragility, and all the other odd terms that describe the myriad, important, and insidious ways oppression operates.

But some of those ways are too insidious to recognize even within these spaces. Some are, in fact, unique to these spaces. Some oppressions are fostered by the very things supposedly set up to help justice spaces thrive. Inadvertently, they create power structures mirroring those they’re working to address.

Being in these spaces for a while now, I’ve noticed that I’ve been increasingly receiving feedback that my writing is inaccessible. I dismissed a lot of this critique on the basis that I am, at my core, a big idea and theory girl. My way of communicating isn’t supposed to be meant for everyone.

But that became a more difficult excuse to embrace once I noticed these concerns coming even from those who generally embrace theoreticals.

So when I read Kai Cheng Thom’s piece “9 Ways We Can Make Social Justice Movements Less Elitist and More Accessible,” I understood how many of the things she listed were problems.

But it took me a while to piece together how so much of what I learned and embraced in these spaces would inevitably lead to those problems – like not being able to address certain mistakes or ignoring activist hierarchies.

It seemed clear that some of the items addressed in her piece are based on systems of power that only benefit a select few, just like those systems I have dedicated my life toward eradicating.

I wondered: What if my increasing inaccessibility was proof I was on the road to those same problems? What if it was less about whether or not my big ideas are a problem and more about whom those ideas seemed to be for and in service to? What did it mean that I hadn’t always found weird academic jargon comforting, even while theorizing, but I do now?

Being someone who often thinks and writes academically, I needed space to engage with the issues important to me in a way that made sense for me.

Activist spaces provided room to flesh out big theories and concepts, but many also implicitly prioritized those things. Often being set up for and by other people like me, these spaces sometimes benefitted us to the detriment of everyone else.

So I started vigilant observation for any problematic behavior I felt encouraged to take part in simply by being amongst people (like me) who would benefit from it.

And in doing so, I recognized ten patterns that demonstrate how activist spaces can inconspicuously feed ideas of elitism and inaccessibility.

it is more about getting a broad topic and inviting all and sundry to submit an essay or article of significant length and consideration. it can be quite interesting as you find people who post poorly, but write well. The problem is getting past the idiocy that infects so much of what goes on around here. For instance, asking for a fictional story supporting Paedophilia as per Karnal's idea. Both disgusting and borderline criminal.

I dont think you would find many people willing to agree with you. Seriously, you would probably find the majority would disagree with you.

What about writing a speech? Make up a fictional situation and write a speech to suit. It could be a election victory speech, a speech to a special interest group or a public speech to a crowd.

There have been some fantastic speakers like Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King etc.  Perhaps someone here has similar latent talent?

I dont think being anon makes much difference. I am happy for people to post their offerings under their own name. Most of the responses will be very predictable but there a few posters here who can jettison their partisan positions long enough to be fair and reasonable.

Personally, I think John Howard was our best-ever PM, but he wrote his own speeches and he was... well, terrible. I often wished I could write his speeches for him. It would be hard to do worse.

His/her/its major challenge would be to A) actually do it and B) be serious.  I think dsmithy70 and dna could right well and I suspect peccahead could as well and I would love to critique him using the same level of pedantry his dishes out.  Maybe he could right a 1200 word article on the difference between illegal and unlawful? Crocodile might do well although if the topic were anything by economics and grpahs were not permitted, it might be a big challenge!  And of course green_snot.  A) he cant count to 1200 (or 12) and he couldnt write a word on the actual topic (see his threads for proof).  Andrei should be asked to write on 'Why i love the Democrats'

  I dont think it has to be serious and I dont know most of the time if Karnal is being serious or not but that makes it funny.. I think humour should be embraced..and we have quite a few very funny posters here..Greggery/Leftwinger/AiA when he wants to ..etc. The funnier the better...more humour-- bring it on.    :)

I don't care where it is, but it would be easier to control by a Mod of a Member Run Board who knows how the buttons work.

For example, all contributions could be sent to that Mod who would then  post them in a Thread hidden from everyone other than FD and the GMods.

The Thread could then be made visible at the same moment.....at the deadline for contributions....so everyone's work is released at the same time.

It can work this way:

Each participant PMs (as per your original idea) their piece to "me."  I'll post them as they arrive in a hidden Thread in Relationships.  At the deadline for contributions, I'll open that Thread for view by everyone AND move it to the General Section.  In that way, all pieces are read by the Members at the same time.

That will be the sum total of 'my' involvement.

I need you to listen closely. I need you to believe me when I tell you what happens.

I need you to say the word “fat.”

About me. Because I am. I’m a size 26 — fat enough that some stores for fat people don’t carry my size. Fat enough that some doctors will refuse to see me. Fat enough that getting on an airplane makes my blood run cold, because they might kick me off, without a refund for my ticket, or they might charge me double, and then I will have to explain to my friends, job, family why I can’t make it on that trip.

Every discussion about bodies — whether in the media or amongst friends — is about how to avoid the horrible fate of looking like me. I need you to hear that this is all hurts, and happens all the time.

I know that this stuff is hard to talk about. But when I talk about fat, I am not talking about feelings or self-esteem or body image issues or inner strength. I am talking about the way individuals and institutions treat me and people who look like me. I need you to acknowledge that you and I have different experiences because I am fat.

I need you to consider your audience. When you say you hate your body for being so fat, or that you are afraid of becoming fat, or when you say that you shouldn’t have eaten that lunch or dessert, or when you announce your new year’s resolution to lose 5, 10, 25 pounds, you are saying that you don’t want your body to end up like mine. Your feelings are real and true and valid. And you still should not say them to the fattest person you know.

I know that all of us are impacted by body shaming, and that everyone has real, valid, deep, hard feelings about our bodies. I still need you to stop perpetuating it, especially when talking about yourself. No amount of caveats or prologues make it hurt me less.

I need you to know that I’m taking it personally because it is personal.

I need you to know that I go to great pains to take care of everyone’s feelings when I talk about being fat, and that, for me, these conversations happen weekly, sometimes daily, and lots of people need lots of attention and care just to be able to hear what I need from them. Sometimes I get tired, frustrated, or angry with the emotional work it takes to just to prepare those around me to hear me name who I am and what I need.

I need you to know that when you talk disparagingly about your own body, and then you say “but not you, you’re beautiful,” your compliments are impossible to believe. That if you disapprove of yourself, vivisect your own body, and then compliment me, I will remember how you talk about both of us.

If you think of your own fat body as repulsive, I will believe that you are also repulsed by mine. I know that you intend to talk about yourself. I need you to know that you are also talking about me.

I need you to let go of the things I have never been able to hold, just for a moment. Just to feel how fragile they are when you loosen your grip, to feel how easily they can shatter. I need you to care for me enough to feel unsafe. I need you to join me for a moment where I live every day.

I need you to try to learn to love the lush overgrowth of your body. Let it grow wild and untamed as a garden you loved as a child. Love it for the way it sustains you, keeps you warm, goes to such lengths not to let you get hurt. Its only job is to care for you. I need you to try to love it if you intend to love me.

I need you to remember what you know from feminism: that blaming individuals for the harassment they experience isn’t supportive or effective. That we question social messages and systems of power that dictate what our bodies are and aren’t allowed to be. And that hysteria and neurasthenia (weak nerves) were very serious health concerns at the time, and they were used to contain and discredit women who wouldn’t comply.

I need you to remember what you know from economic justice: that individual work ethic can’t hold a candle to the systems stacked against us. And we can’t attribute poverty to poor work ethic any more than we can attribute harassment of fat people to low self esteem or weak willpower.

I need you not to forget your social justice values when I tell you about my experience.

I need you to stop reducing my experiences to hurt feelings, or to ill-intended individuals. I need you to know that even with good intentions, you can still do harm. I need less empathy and more solidarity. Less pity, more anger. Fewer condolences; more action. I need you to stop comforting me.

I need an ally.

There needs to be a short list of topics, also easy to do if the person is sane and not an arsehole - also not aussie or karnal. and finally there is simple discussion on the submitted work which will invariably be limited to nothing more than abusing the writer, attacking the liberals and avoiding at all costs the substance of the article.  it's incredibly simple providing people are not arseholes or terminally stupid.  And there is the problem.

You dont want to play by the rules even when you set them so I'm not going to either. You refused to submit something last time so I am going it alone and submitting a short story. It was Longy's idea to write an essay. His challenge was to write something you completely disagree with, hence displaying your skill in rhetoric and persuasion.

You could indeed write a persuasive piece that supports an argument using fiction, and I see no problem with that. Umberto Eco did this with his novels.

Maybe Longy can post an erotic short story in support of paedophilia.

Nabokov wrote a number of books, none of them had to do with child porn. he did however write a book called "Lolita" in which the protagonist falls in love with his 12 year old step daughter. If you have read this book and you think it is child porn then i can recommend a good psychologist.
