OMG what a relief that would be.

Never in the history of human debate has so much credibility been lost by so many so fast.
Never has  so much hysteria, petulance and childishness been on display by a defeated rabble of neurotic zombies.

You're trolling a bit there old fella!

But, as a Trump supporter (such that a non-citizen can be a supporter of any foreign country's candidates for president), but now that you're asking, from out of the 'why', I'm asking the 'how'...

[olist]
It's now a universal motif for Trump supporters, from every socioeconomic rank, racial and gender divide to respond to 'Why?' with permutations of 'I wanted to send the message to the establishment that I wanted change'.

Nothing, it seems, not even their '3:00 AM terrors' that Trump may present a mortal threat to the state (and most supporters will admit at least to profound 'misgivings'), could derail their resolution that they were not voting for the man as they were voting for change... Any change.

In that, even Bernie Sanders could quite probably have won the election for the Democrats, because people, who no longer believe in something, do not believe in nothing, they believe in anything... Even something as nebulous and dangerous as change for its own sake.

Those who voted for Trump as a result of their dire economic situation in the so-called rust-belt states, blaming the exodus of jobs and industry to China and Mexico on the Chinese and Mexicans, should also take into account, of course, that the Chinese and Mexicans didn't steal US jobs... They were given to them by Americans and the only way Trump could have them returned is by morphing into a latter-day New Dealer...

If that happens, it will be the greatest irony (or U-turn) in US political history...

He (like Roosevelt before him) will need to 'punish the economic royalists'.

So the very best Trump supporters can hope for now is that Trump reveals himself as that latter day 'New Dealer' who will emerge from his narcissistic fog, see the need for a hard swing, not to the right, but to the left (as Roosevelt did when he asked for, and received from Congress, powers as great as that would be given to him, if the US was invaded) and become, like Roosevelt, the hard 'leftist' the establishment (or his supporters) never saw coming.

[/olist]

Trump is a very "in your face " phenomenom.

When a scrubby citizen looks at Trump, he can but have 1 of 2 reactions.

he can say "this guy has accomplished a lot, he has batted way above what he should have been able to do. he has built businesses, pushed thru barriers, has a beautiful wife and kids....What would i have to do to be like Trump.

But the scrub is then met with the answer.....if i want to be like Trump, i would have to work my a*ss off, i would have to become a man of action, not a man of talk, i would have to take risks, not break under the brutal social pressure.  And i'm a mediocre scrub and that all just sounds too hard.

Do you know what the ego of the mediocre scrub does when confronted with this...it gets mad. It finds it SO MUCH EASIER to just sh*t talk the successful guy and get a little hit of validation from feeling "morally superior" when in fact, deep down, the mediocre scrub is doing this totally out of laziness.

Laziness addiction destroys more lives then cancer , heart disease and auto accidents. If you hate Trump and you cant work out why, this is probably the diagnosis.
I feel genuinely sorry for you, you are going to have  a low level refridgerator humm of hatred going on forever. Its not a good way to live. I'd suggest you study trump and aspire to be like trump and stop with the lazy hater frame you are coming from

Ironic that you make a claim about laziness by posting a lazy ad-hom opinion...

You're not much of a thinker beyond vacuous existential new-age lazy 'sloganism'...

How will a Trump Administration return off-shored jobs to the US, if not by some form of 'New Deal'?

And (something that Roosevelt never had to confront), how will a Trump Administration prevent US buyers from purchasing goods from overseas via internet buying sites like ebay?

it is increasingly evident that Trump will change very little because to make any change at all, he has to have some idea of how to do it and what to change it to. He has neither.

North, i always found "thinking" over rated.
Just take massive action. see what happens (failure or success), learn from it, recalibrate and move on.
Dont you find, society has become paralysed by people substituting thinking and talking for "doing".

People seem to expect massive applause and Kudos nowadays for thinking.

Action has become subservient to thought.
This is very dangerous and again reflects a certain timidity and softness in the beta male Intelligentsia

if 'thinking" and "mentally masturbating" prevents "taking action", then it is not desirable.

How do you become a self actualised fully functional human being....by taking action, falling down, getting back up , learning lessons, applying those lessons, staying true to the processes you have found work.

You cannot and will not go anywhere in "thought".

In fact, google, facebook and microsoft agree with me and are paying for their "creative' employees to do sessions of meditation.  and do them every day.
meditation involves "emptying the mind of thought". it is from this place that creativity emerges.

You are smart enough to understand paradox, i am sure NoN.

i shant respond to longweekends derision of my ideas.
I have strong personal boundaries.
My "inner cheerleaders" are all on my team and i do not engage in meaningless to and fro negativity. "Action" has taught me that this would just fuel a downward spiral  ;)

What is "mental masturbation" such that you think you can conflate it with 'thinking"?

You know that ignorance itself (which is ameliorated only by the ability to think) has been, since ancient times, a form or a font of evil?

what becomes patently obvious is that there are the people who are 'stuck in their heads" and there are the people who "take action".

how would you become a good horse rider.

1  think about it, watch lots of clips on you tube, watch other people ride and be a critic. learn from your keen eye how to give a critique of other people's riding skills. watch people who ride and when they fall off, laugh at them.

2 jump on, fall off, dust yourself off and repeat until falling off no longer occurs.

Trump has done this brutal training. all successful people have done this brutal training.
people think that they have the right to criticise the guy who is "doing it" without "doing it themselves".
Sorry , you dont....your criticism is meaningless .
Get out of being "stuck in your head", do the brutal training...then you can have a seat at the big boys table.

Hmnnnnn, who else would melt the next generations multi-year sea ice in the Arctic but a total jockey! Malcolm Turnbull- let alone the modern capital "L"iberal brand- is up the creek if his brethren of online helpers all get labeled complete w****rs.

I wonder what Costello thinks of Climate Change and the idea of what intergenerational theft really is, personally. None of these exalted people ever get asked where the capital "L"iberal moral ground is on these issues because it's panic stations as we speak: the markets are not stagnant forever and expect the heads up from any government where they conduct business if change is afoot and everyone is too scared to say anything concrete.

Trumps already backflipped on next to everything and losers like aquascoot reckon they know the cut of his jib: it's like that mining guy that's always on Paul Murrays foxtel show pretending a Trump win is  awin for the capital "L"iberal party- none of these guys know where the world is heading but they're all s***** Trumps d***** like they always knew who he was and what he stood for and further none of it ever stood for what they stood for before, and not even after, the endless backflips.

if 'thinking" and "mentally masturbating" prevents "taking action", then it is not desirable.

How do you become a self actualised fully functional human being....by taking action, falling down, getting back up , learning lessons, applying those lessons, staying true to the processes you have found work.

You cannot and will not go anywhere in "thought".

In fact, google, facebook and microsoft agree with me and are paying for their "creative' employees to do sessions of meditation.  and do them every day.
meditation involves "emptying the mind of thought". it is from this place that creativity emerges.

i dont like to sh*t talk people and i will tell you why.
There is a very good book by Michael Jordans coach called "Relentless" about how to compete and achieve excellence.

In it , the author, Tim Grover, says that "you know your competition has been completely beaten , when all they can do is sh*t talk you".

I believe this to be true of the current analysis of Trump.

From gregs repeated talk of pedophilia to a whole host of character assasinations, i know that Trumps opponents have nothing bacuse this is the tactic they have resorted to.
It is a dark path they have gone down and i dont think it does them any good.
And for future reference, when all you can offer up is to sh*t talk someone, i dont think that is showing a lot of reflective thought on your part.

Steven Coveys excellent work "Crucial conversations" would help you to engage in a more mature and manly way

Well, I guess all else being benign, that'd work...

But what if all that can be said about someone amounts to sh*t talk? There are plenty (not here) I could name who deserve only sh*t talk...

Do you really think sh*t talking is, by that fact, necessarily and exclusively because the talker has been beaten?

You are so stupid that you cannot even understand how truly stupid you are. Of course you support Trump - a man who is going to very publicly show his stupidty to all.

Anyone that is so gobsmackingly willing to actually decry 'thinking' is clearly very deficient in a wide variety of areas. THINKING is what has constructed our entire society.

Because he is unashamedly and proudly a 'non-thinker' it is unlikely to occur to him that calling someone a complete fool, might be nothing more than an accurate assessment.

I think they have largely gone. Maybe they've checked into rest cure homes.

                         **************

Trump and FDR are/were facing two entirely different sets of economic circumstances, as I'm sure you're aware NorthbyNorth.

In FDR's case, he had to deal with banking collapses, especially local banks as well as the national variety. He had a total collapse of effective consumer & producer demand at home and abroad. He had, well who knows, 20-30% living off the soup kitchens.

In Trump's case the situation is nearly as dramatic in some respect but it's more of a transitional economic problem and a trade problem.

I reject your categorisation of FDR as hard leftist. He was a pragmatic & charismatic administrator, and a shrewd judge of people to do the necessary jobs, just as, in my limited judgement, I take Trump to be.

We shall see what we shall see. But my confident expectation is that after 4 years, when Trump decides it's time for him to pass the baton on, there will be a definite majority clamouring for him to stay.

At the very least he was branded a socialist (even a communist) by his critics...

BTW it is possible to be a pragmatic & charismatic administrator, and a shrewd judge of people to do the necessary jobs and also be a socialist (or hard leftist)...

In Trump's case, if he does ultimately warrant the epithet "socialist", it will be one of the great political ironies in modern history... As he would then, of course, be a hero to the left and, of course, a 'great betrayer' to the right...

The question would then be not what he is branded, but can he fill the shoes of the great one who went before him.

He was branded a socialist by people who had grown up in the Victorian age. Today the Democrats would be No Platforming him and he would have Black Lives Matter rioting & burning cars.
We would call him a good centre left leader now, like the ill-fated Matteo Renzi.

if 'thinking" and "mentally masturbating" prevents "taking action", then it is not desirable.

It takes a special kind of stupid to decry 'thinking' and merely responsive action.

Your 'inner cheerleaders' are not what you think they are. (consider schizophrenia for instance)

i dont like to sh*t talk people and i will tell you why.

LOL

GROUP THINKING that is.
Not really a shining achievement.

You don't even know what the term "groupthink" means.

All false argument just to win daddys approval because you are from a family of cold blooded planet accountants: horse tranquiliser is it?

::) (..boring!!!)

We would call him a good centre left leader now, like the ill-fated Matteo Renzi.

He was branded a socialist because he concentrated power at the centre and then used it to implement initiatives like colossal state-run infrastructure construction or forbidding the hording of gold (which was to be sold to the state)... Things that would not have been out of place (in name, at least) if they came out of the USSR or China.

Nothing wrong with what he did or how he did it. He did get Congressional approval.
My hope is Trump can do similar things in different circumstances, like urban renewal, highway renewal.
Most importantly, cleansing the spirit of the country.

again, if one was to put on ones "THINKING ' cap, one would realise the absurdity of the sexual predator allegations.

As a billionaire , with hotels all over the world, if Trumps primary motivation was his sexual appetite , he would just fly below the radar and head to Thailand and he would have sexual partners lined up on a conveyor belt like all the rich german businessmen (who fly beneath the radar do).

But he didnt do that, and he is now so scrutinised, he could never do that EVER EVER EVER without a million gossip mags publishing the details.

So anyone with a brain who knows how the world works would know a sexual predator would never run for president and anyone asserting this is just a hater who has got nothing  ;)

It's a debatable point: religion asks why would you want to empty yur mind but meditation isn't emptying the mind to the point of nothing: it can be as simple as focusing on saying 1 to ten ... not exactly emptying the mind but decluttering so verbs or nouns I don't know or care.... Trump may create chaos (he probably will).
There is a great book on how to thrive in chaos and there is a lot of evidence that chaos is very good for systems as they reorganise in  a stronger and more robust way.

i suppose berlin and tokyo were fairly chaotic in 1945, much better 50 years later.
