Scientists Confirm Great Barrier Reef Coral Die-Off Is Worst On Record
In one huge section of the reef, more than two-thirds of corals are dead. posted on Nov. 29, 2016, at 11:13 a.m. Rob Stott BuzzFeed News Reporter, Australia Scientists have confirmed the coral bleaching event that struck the Great Barrier Reef earlier this year led to the worst coral die-off on record. The worst affected area is a 700km section in the north of the reef, in which 67% of shallow water corals have died in the past nine months. “Most of the losses in 2016 have occurred in the northern, most-pristine part of the Great Barrier Reef. This region escaped with minor damage in two earlier bleaching events in 1998 and 2002, but this time around it has been badly affected,” said Terry Hughes, director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University. Scientists say the northern section of the reef will take at least 10 years to recover, but are concerned that rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change will lead to another bleaching event within that period, meaning many corals will not be given sufficient time to return to full health. The bleaching crisis was first uncovered in March, when abnormally high sea temperatures caused corals to expel tiny photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, turning the coral white. At the time, 93% of corals surveyed were affected. Some of these corals have recovered in subsequent months, but many are now permanently lost. However, there was some good news for southern sections of the reef. “On average, 6% of bleached corals died in the central region in 2016, and only 1% in the south. The corals have now regained their vibrant colour, and these reefs are in good condition,” said Andrew Baird from the ARC Centre, who led research teams in the area. Another silver lining was a small corner of the northern part of the reef which managed to escape the worst of the damage. “We found a large corridor of reefs that escaped the most severe damage along the eastern edge of the continental shelf in the far north of the Great Barrier Reef,” Hughes said. “We suspect these reefs are partially protected from heat stress by upwelling of cooler water from the Coral Sea.” The Australian government is due to report soon to UNESCO on efforts to save the reef, after it narrowly avoided being listed as “in danger” last year. The government will need to show how it is implementing its $2 billion “reef 2050” plan, if the reef is to once again avoid being listed as in danger. Earlier this year, a “report card” on the reef’s health gave it a mark of D for the fifth year in a row, and that was before the bleaching crisis was being taken into account. So s the coral really dead? Or is it that the algae is dead, or been expelled by the coral, and other algae will take their place?

I have seen no evidence that marine scientists have drilled etc, to determine he coral being dead or alive. All I have seen is stories of its being bleached, which does not indicate coral death. Coral and algae live in a symbiotic relationship. Coral do eject the algae. Algae can repopulate bleached coral. |

They don't need to drill to determine that the coral has died. They just need to survey the coral a few months later. Which they have done. If the coral is still bleached then it is dead because coral can only survive a limited time without it's algae. Even if the coral does survive and it is repopulated by it's algae it is still stressed and it's reproduction is adversely affected. |

Yes it takes longer to recover. They are saying it will take 10-15 years to recover. New corals grow on old dead corals. |

It gets delayed. Albeit with the increase that occurs in the interim. You really need to read up on coral spawning. |

yes. Now show me the study that says we are anywhere near an extinction event for corals., which BTW have been around for about 500 million years. Where it has been both warmer and cooler than current. |

It always amuses me how defensive the AGW deniers are about this issue.
Surely if humans arn't responsible for the global warming we are currently experiencing then we arn't responsible for the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef either. So why does Pauline Hanson need to make that ridiculous visit to a cherry picked healthy part of the southern reef? It is almost as if it is a reflex action by the extreme right wing to immediately reject anything scientific that relates to the environment |

It does show the reef can recover. Remember it was bleached in 2005-6. The_Barnacle wrote on Dec 4th, 2016 at 10:23am:
You did get that bit right. I have commented on other threads that merely because bleaching wasn't reported until the 1980's, it does not mean it has never happened before. Corals have been around for about 500 million years, where it has been warmer and cooler than now. |

From interview with Valerie Taylor..
“In 1965 we went from one end of the reef to the other, over six months, and we found bleaching then. In the ’70s we went back and you’d never know it had happened. The coral had recovered; nature had taken care of it. I’ve seen reefs in PNG that were as white as snow and I’ve just come back from there and they’re terrific”. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/life/weekend-australian-magazine/valerie-taylor-80-diver-and-shark-expert/news-story/a2c552677cbe0ff0f09f8ed282fbfd12 1965? Well before AGW. |
