Teenager killed himself after 'constant bullying' about his sexuality
Tyrone Unsworth’s mother says the 13-year-old year 7 student at Aspley state high school in Brisbane was repeatedly harassed The mother of a Brisbane teenager who killed himself says he did so after being bullied about his sexuality. Tyrone Unsworth, 13, was a year 7 student at Aspley state high school in Brisbane. He died on Tuesday. Amanda Unsworth, his mother, remembered him as an ambitious, loving boy interested in animals and fashion. She told the Courier-Mail that “a lot of people started picking on him” over his sexuality. “He was a really feminine male, he loved fashion, he loved make-up and the boys always picked on him, calling him gay boy, faggot, fairy; it was a constant thing from year 5,” she said. “I feel like these people who were bullying Tyrone are the cause of why he is not here any more. They pushed him to the edge.” She posted an image of herself holding the front page of the Courier-Mail, showing a photo of Tyrone above the headline “Bullied to death”, on Facebook on Friday. “We Love and Miss you so much Tyrone,” she wrote. “We will stand up and fight to get as much awareness help and support for others out there, SAY NO TO BULLYING.” Guardian Australia has attempted to contact Amanda Unsworth. Tyrone Unsworth had been hospitalised less than a month ago after an incident allegedly involving another student. Queensland police confirmed to the Courier-Mail that their investigation into the alleged assault was ongoing on Thursday. His funeral will be held on 1 December at Albany Creek. His mother requested that attendees wear brightly coloured clothes. Aspley state high school’s principal, Jacquinta Miller, said in a statement circulated by the Queensland department of education there were concerns about the wellbeing of Tyrone Unsworth’s peers following “this tragic incident”. The school did not tolerate bullying, she said, and asked the community “refrain from inflaming what is already a complex and challenging situation”. Miller had told the Courier-Mail that neither Tyrone Unsworth nor his family had reported any allegation of bullying to the school. “Neither the student nor his family ever came to us to say there was a problem of any kind. “If they did, we absolutely would have stepped in.” Her statement clarified that the recent incident reported to police occurred outside of school hours. The Safe Schools Coalition Australia extended its sympathy to those affected by Unsworth’s death, which it said was evidence of the impact of bullying and discrimination faced by all LGBTI young people. The stories you need to read, in one handy email Read more It pointed to research that said 75% of same sex-attracted young people aged between 14 and 21 had experienced some form of homophobic bullying or abuse because of their sexuality, or perceived sexuality. Eighty per cent said it was while they were at school. In Queensland, school principals are free to decide whether their schools join the controversial Safe Schools anti-bullying program. A number of schools that had opted in were previously listed on the Safe Schools website but the list was removed after they began to receive abuse from opponents. Guardian Australia has asked both the education department and Aspley state high school whether it is a member of the program. “Safe Schools” was trending on Twitter in Australia early on Friday afternoon as many said Tyrone Unsworth’s death was evidence of why the program was needed. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/nov/25/teenager-killed-himself-after-constant-bullying-about-his-sexuality |

While don't like them, suicide and persecution is not the answer.
It's very rare for kids with sexual identity disorders to grow into happy adults. These kids need psychiatric help, the sooner this is realized the better off they'll be. |

Very sad that a child that young felt so desperate. I would like to think I would have noticed his turmoil and sought help for him before it got to that stage.
I have seen lots of kids exhibit low level bullying while their parents and family think they are the epitome of the perfect child. Playing sweetly with younger relatives and siblings until the adults' backs are turned and then pushing them over sort of thing. Giving younger ones toys to play with while the adults coo at how wonderful that is. Only to snatch the toy away when the adults' backs are turned. |

Finally...you have posted something I can agree with! Back in my day, blokes like me (I was bigger than most of my peers at School) knocked this schit off right there and then. (I concede the bullying was not gender related......but it still went on.......skinny, fat.......wanker.............whatever.) I also agree that Parents are now far too modest about stepping in at School on behalf of their bullied kid. If one of mine was being done like this, I (personally.....yeas....me personally) would be right there in the bully's face and likely belt the little prick. Sue me. |

If the matter was not addressed by the School, and mine was likely to be suicidal, without any hesitation. I don't mean that I would beat the shite out of an 'eight' year old literally. But.....I would be physically (and I am not a small person) in his face telling him what will come his way from me if he did not stop bullying mine. I'd give the bully their own back, as a parent of the victim of their bullying. To take that a step further. This is a true story I revealed at what was a credible PA some years ago. I'm telling it as it is, and knowing the Law, but retired at the time. We (Cabbies) as a routine dropped off at Schools and picked up from Schools, teenagers who attended a 'Special School,' for mentally challenged kids who were still able to go to School. An afternoon pick-up. All routine. But, one was not there, so I get out of the Cab to go inside to find out where he is. I've gone no more that five yards away from the Cab, and dodge a missile thrown at me. It hits the Cab. A soft drink bottle. Me: "Which retard?" They all froze and then pointed out some male kid I have never had any dealing with. I go straight to him...I put my right hand (not a small thing) on his chest, and march him back against a tree which was nearby. While I had him pinned there, I gave him a gob full, and then released him. I then marched straight to the Teacher's Staff Room and gave them the details. They thanked me. Never had any trouble there ever again Sometimes, there is only one way to tell a kid he is an arse-hole. |

today you would be locked up for touching a child...once upon a time children respected the police uniform..not any more.. I dont think this is just a school. teacher problem.... but in this case where the school claims they never knew...I am sorry I would say thats impossible..and if the parents didnt approach the school.. then I would say there is something wrong with their thinking.. this boy would have been let down by all those who should have been protecting him.... |

Yeah, this thing where forum members accuse each other of homosexuality is juvenile. And yet we can assume that most are adult males. It actually says more about the poster making the accusation. Even as an insult, its pretty lame. It may indicate a frustration with their inability to compose a meaningful critique, therefore descending into invective they hope might slander the character of their opponents without evidence. I do not support the homosexual agenda, but it has its human context, and spitting out "Homo!" like a hissing cat, is hardly the sign of intelligence. |

Pay attention, hippie: In America alone there are a million-and-a-half people homeless in 2015. 300,000 of those homeless are children and an estimated 450,000 are either physically and/or mentally disabled. Millions more live in substandard housing, doubled up with other families, or in motels if they are lucky are people in living in their cars are also increasing. Now I know such conditions mean nothing to your worthless cantankerous old ass but the truth remains even in your country a great majority of the population is economically insecure. Such stress(es) caused by living in households where only one accident or illness away can leave someone in financial ruin has been squarely placed on young people who are not only burdened by having to take care of your old worthless ass but by debt, narrowing prospects, rising medical costs, and decreasing retirement benefits - something your worthless generation relishes in. Compound that with by militarism and endless war the prevalence of serious depression among teenagers increased by 37% between 2005 and 2014. What's even more scary is children from 10 through 14 are for the first time more likely to die from suicide than from a car accident. Most of them within the borders of your own country. Get lost. |
