A Uni of Michigan survey shows that, across a number of measures, there has been a surge in hopes & expectations of both American consumers & businesses in the wake of the Trump victory.

Only to be expected of course.

Substitute  "American" with "Capitalist"

For all its many faults, capitalism is what pays everybody's bills, and I have yet to hear of a socialist or communist country that had a Foreign Aid bill amounting to billions each year.

And if that were so - and it isnt - then Trump would be leading in the popular vote instead of trailing by 2million - a massive margin.

You might want to look a bit more carefully. China's foreign aid comes with strings - lots of them including military bases and other such things. Western forgien aid doesnt typically come with political strings. So no, foreign aid is still largely a western initiative.

But a proper comparison really does need to discuss those attached strings. Foreign aid given in exchange for access to certain materials or ports etc is not aid per se but rather a commercial enticement or a flat-out bribe.
