We did the stereotypical fourth of July , beer, hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, potato salad....  The kids swam in the pool and the old folks talked about younger days and their aches and pains. It was a great get together, I wonder how much longer it will represent Independent Day.

My favourite from that time was talking to a girl whose father was in the US army and had been stationed outside the US for a period of time.
She said it was somewhere beginning with S. I must have spent 10 mins at best listing every country I know with S - Surinam, Sweden, Somalia, Switzerland - I even listed Syria....

Later on her sister came through and told me he was stationed in Cyprus...

I'd say for the most part that is true. Ask any American kid where Central America is and they will most likely tell you "Kansas."  I was only in New York (Manhattan proper) for two days so really can't say much about the politeness of the populace there. When I was stationed at Paris Island in South Carolina did I meet some of the nicest, friendliest people but that again, I think that's just the way of the south or that's the way they treat those in the service; the people there have a sense of charm about them.

By far the worst people I've ever met (besides Texuuns and southern Californians) were the British. Didn't care much for London. I found the place to be one of the dirtiest places on earth (once you get passed the tourist traps) and being an American it's just so ingrained to say "Have a nice day" to someone - but not the limeys. "Don't tell me what kind of a smacking day I should have you bloody Yank." was usually the response back.


Have never been to Australia but have found most of the Australians I have run across to be quiet in comparison with others foreigners I've run across. A Briton living here will boast how about friggin' English they are and how much they really don't care for America except for, of course, "Florrrreeeda" or that their really crappy band is living in L.A. flophouse apartment knowing they are "going to make it "big" someday.

Ask any Australian here where they are from and they'll simply say, "Australia, mate." and that's it. They go back to what they were doing. No complaints, no boasting, nothing.

That's not a fair representation of Americans, their own peers know they are airheads. We have one group that you can't talk to unless the subjects are music or sports. These groups are not truly stupid, they can bore you to tears talking about their favorite celebrities for hours.

Depends on where you go in America, whom you meet and what circles you hang out in.

The general education level is lacking because teachers' unions control public education, and that makes it difficult to get rid of inept teachers. In New York they have what are called "rubber rooms" for teachers who have no business being in the classrooms, but remain on the payroll because of the power of the unions.

The documentary "Waiting for Superman" covers the problem quite nicely.

It doesn't help that the federal government has its own bloated bureaucracy, the U.S. Department of Education, which is essentially accountable to no one. Thus, it doesn't really matter that test scores haven't improved since it was created in 1979 (by Jimmy Carter, not surprisingly) -- the bottom line is that Congress has no intention of abolishing it.

This is one of those federal agencies that could disappear tomorrow and the vast majority of Americans would never know the difference.

Exactly, Mort. When the left was trying to sell Obamacare, I kept hearing all these horror stories about people dying in the streets for lack of medical insurance.

And I made the same point: How is that possible, when any illegal immigrant can step across the border, stroll into an American E.R. and get medical treatment regardless of his ability to pay? And forget emergencies -- some Mexican women were using American hospitals for prenatal care, for crying out loud.

To anyone who kept arguing in the face of such overwhelming evidence, I simply posed this challenge: Give me the names of these supposed victims who died for lack of medical insurance.

Unsurprisingly, I never even got one.
