So Xenophon is criticising Labor and Liberal for leaving it up to voters to decide if they will preference NXT while he is issuing open tickets? I think that's a little bit hypocritical. Xenophon really has nothing to complain about. He would have grounds for complaint if the major parties were explicitly directing preferences away from his party but this isn't happening.
I think it's a good thing that Labor, Liberal and NXT are not choosing to direct preferences to the others. The election in SA could produce the most democratic outcome we have seen for many years. |

Bam, can you please explain to me the difference between an open ticket and a split ticket? I'm not familiar with split tickets.

I assume a split ticket is the lib HTV card that Bam posted in the OP.

The OP says that both lib and labor have issued split tickets . How are they different from open tickets? |

open tickets are simply when the party doesn't give any instructions for preferencing.

It's a good move by NX to play the victim card, even when it may not be so.
Thing is though, by Labor not preferencing NXP over libs, they are protecting Pyne and Briggs. We have Labor complaining about Libs, then protecting them. And vice verse, Libs protecting the likes of Labor's Feeney. Lib Lab ~ Same old, same old. |

Gandalf has already explained it, but the difference is as follows: * A split ticket (see the OP) has multiple lists of preferences and the voter can choose one. * An open ticket has no indication of preferences at all but presumably provides instructions for casting a valid vote (number every box in sequence). |

How the hell can NXT whinge about the lib HTV card, when it specifically gives an option to preference NXT?? LOL!
And by the way, why would the libs even want to do this split ticket - whats in it for them? |

Title: Re: Labor, Liberal issuing split HTV cards in SA Post by Bam on Jun 14th, 2016 at 1:06pm
The difference with split tickets and open tickets can be seen by looking at the example of a split ticket. Here is the list of candidates for Mayo in ballot order:
DALLIMORE, Glen Australian Labor Party SHARKIE, Rebekha Nick Xenophon Team DZIVINSKI, Luke Liberal Democrats DANIELL, Nathan The Greens BRIGGS, Jamie Liberal HICKS, Bruce Family First In both tickets, the Liberals are giving the second preference to Family First (who are closet Liberals), the third to the Liberal Democrats and the Greens are last. Only the order of NXT and ALP are switched. With an open ticket, there is no list of preferences. |

The libs HTV card is immaterial here anyway - since they'll be in the 2pp playoff, and therefore their preferences will never get used.
Its only relevant because of how it fits in with a wider state-wide, or even nation-wide deal with labor (if you do this, I'll do that). The only important preferences in play here are whoever comes third on primaries out of labor and NXT |

This explanation is inaccurate. More precisely, the important preferences in Mayo are the preferences of whichever of ALP or NXT finishes third after the preferences of the other parties with a smaller share of votes are distributed. |
