Title: What's wrong with this socket set ?
Post by Sprintcyclist on Jun 4th, 2016 at 11:55pm

I spent quite some time looking for the right socket set some time ago.
This set is wrong, why ?

There is a ring inside the top of each socket where there
is no hexagonal shape.

1/4 inch, doubt you would be undoing many tight bolts with that.

Are you saying the hexagonal shape is not cut top to bottom right down to the bottom of the socket?

Also I dont like six point sockets usually cheap rubbish.

Yes - I have a cheap set like that.
the hex shape needs to go right to the end of the inside of the socket.
Not many do & it can be a pain sometimes to use them.

Hex is OK on most jobs.

3/8..

.............

also... a good quality socket set will have a lock on Sockets where the socket only comes off when you push a button...

If that picture of ratchet is complete that's 1/4 inch.

1/4" suits what I work on.

What's wrong with that set is there is no strong arm.
Ratchets are not designed for 'cracking' a nut off or 'squeezing' one up.

I bought one of these.
The spinner handle doubles as a strong arm.

I am a bit the other way!

1/4" 3/8" 1/2" and even those strong ones for use with the compressor rattle guns!

Too much money and too much time in Bunnings etc.  :)

bunnings ..............

I never buy tools in bunnings, on principle.

Was just an example of a tool nut always buying tools. I have bought a lot at Bunnings which have largely been OK.

My sockets are

Sidchrome 1/4"

Toledo ?     3/8"      Not sure how good these are but have had and used them for many years

Sidchrome 1/2"

The Heavy duty ones I am unsure where I bought them?  Ebay?

Look at this bargain. $20

I have one, it is excellent, Torque setting, light, use adaptors for sockets or screwdriver bits.

They are good, I bought the Ryobi one when I had a large screw driving job (fitting aluminium strips on the bottom of glass (plastic really) house if I recall correctly)

I thought they were a bit of a toy when I was recommended to get one.
It's probably my most used tool.
Got the hex to 1/4 square drive adapter and it does all my sockets too

my newest took at home is this :

is too good for my home uses.
So that's good  :)
