Title: If you won.............no more work.....!!!! Post by Ajax on Apr 24th, 2016 at 2:18pm
I've been working since I was 13 years old, started with the paper rounds and graduated to stacking shelves at woollies, the chocolate biscuit isle was always a favourite shift, then got into the hospitality industry from waiter to bartender while studying at uni, then got into my profession and have been there ever since.
I tellya what if I win tatts I wouldn't NEVER work another day in my life. At my age I would be very happy to shed that 9 to 5 ball and chain, getting rather sick of it to tell you the truth. What about you...!!!??? |

Us engineers seem to have the same ideas.
I would certainly never work again. But what would you do? Boredom kills, just look at the super rich, they all kill themselves. I think Id have to do something, travel, volunteer, something. |

Yeah..Engineers are good, we need more Engineers, they actually do something with their lives. :)

I agree you would have to do something otherwise you'll be in the Earth within 6 months...I've seen it. I have some pet projects based on engineering that I would like to accomplish and try and make some money out of, travel definitely to Europe especially Greece, I've never been. When I say never work again it doesn't mean becoming a couch potato, plus there's plenty to do around the house. It would be lovely.....a person can dream can't he....!! |

Yeah as long as there are jobs to support these poor guys and gals coming through. The government has given the oligarchy the authority to do what ever they like with our engineering industry. In a few years there will be wax models in a glass enclosure at museums the plaque will read Engineer. |

It’s a shame for her, if she doesn’t want to go overseas the last bastion of engineering in Australia is food & beverages, Defence, Paper mills, very small manufacturers and of course the BIG gravy train that is environmental engineering just tell her to say she is in the affirmative regarding AGW otherwise no matter how talented she is she won’t get in, I wish her well. |

Food and beverages and paper mills will all face international competition. In regard to working overseas, the ATO has changed the tax rules in 2009 so that lucrative jobs in zero tax or low tax countries are not so attractive anymore because anybody deemed taxable by ATO's rules will pay tax on their world wide earnings whereas in the past they were exempt if out of the country for 90+ days. Prior to 2009 ATO made the rules vague so they could screw you if they didn't like you. This also creates a lot of complexity in providing evidence of income in a manner that proves that money is not being stashed away overseas before it is taxed. In the UK wages are so low engineers work for beer money. |

You are quite lucky to have a job in your chosen field Ajax. Not to say you didn't work for it of course.
My advice isn't to dream about escape, but instead try to furnish your prison cell :D Not with material possessions, but with personal achievements. 9 to 5 can feel like a grind because along the way you aren't living your life. You're a slave to your routine. It probably reads something like this: Wake up, go to work, come home and unwind, dinner, sleep, repeat. It's very hard to do this but somewhere between work and rest you need to do something that you feel is constructive. Yes it takes effort, which is sapped by your work during the day. Yes it might mean waking up earlier before work. Yes there are only 24 hours in the day and you'll have to squeeze every last drop out of them. If you work on something that you can progress toward over time, for just an hour a day, eventually you will be building something greater than yourself This is essential. Some have a hobby for restoring cars, others workout at the gym. You need something to devote yourself to that isn't your job. We can dream, but most of us won't have a job that satisfies us completely, that is we do it just for the money. But as humans we still search for that sense of satisfaction. |

Engineers are the most varied pay group ever conceived: they aren't all einstein broseph! Overseas they train harder because they are schooled harder from a younger age andthose trained here are only just, at the higher levels, deemed competent to even have a conversation! Your batman suit must be fun when hallucinating on crack... although we all know how boring that is :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D |

Yeah I know I'm still lucky to have a job especially at my age, but yeah the highlight is what I'm getting sick off, been doing it for more than three decades. I love my job and what I do, I get immense satisfaction out of it, there's nothing else I can imagine myself doing to tell you the truth, I'm grateful to be still working. I do have hobbies and interest out side of work which keep me busy during the week, but if I could break that cycle I would, maybe go part time nah that is no longer an option. |

You need something to look forward to that isn't work. Something that you're working toward. You can't have job satisfaction if you're only working for money that goes nowhere. Sounds like maybe you need a holiday to reset and put things back in perspective. |

I would probably still do something ... buy a nice little earner that I can have fully managed ... turn up when I want to, stay home every other day.

Depends on how much you win. If its 1 or 2 million, then a decent house in middle suburb of Melbourne will probably leave you no change after that. And you will have to continue working, although without the stress of a mortgage.
If its 25 million on other hand.... nah, I would be too bored. I probably give all to my mum dad, brother. |

9 to 5 yikes. Haven't done that for a good while.
Win Lotto, I'd never get bored. If it was about the 10m range a nicer house with a few more toys. I'm more into the toys that are also discipline so sailboats, kit-surf gear etc. and a bit more travel. I'd buy some obscenely expensive audio gear tho. |
Title: Re: If you won.............no more work.....!!!! Post by Binary on Apr 24th, 2016 at 6:04pm
I'd put my millions to work somehow or other, and after enough years of growth become even richer.
Then I'd set about spreading my money to the poor, mainly through education programs. Of course along the way I can still enjoy the fine restaurants etc. I'd only keep a few mill for myself and future family. Too much money spoils people. |

what about it? Am i bothered by unions? no. Pay people what the law requires you to and unions don't bother you. I've been in business for almost 20 yrs. Never had a problem with unions. GordyL wrote on Apr 24th, 2016 at 6:05pm:
I will never vote for libs whilst they put donors and a few select first. If libs sort that out, and put forward policies that look after the country first, I've no problem voting for them. I would never vote for an extreme left party. It's all about balance. A little to the left and a little to the right. To far either way and the scales tip over. |

Yeah been there done that, but it was 7 to 4 The last 9 years were a little better. I traveled the world for work, visited many interesting places and met some really nice people. sort of went like this. Got up at an ungodly hour to catch a shuttle bus to the airport. Fought my way through customs. Rested and had breakfast in the Qantas club. Got on a plane and watched movies for up to 20 hours. Got off the plane and went to the factory/office/site. Went to the motel. Slept got up went to the office/factory/site. Repeat. Then flew home to do it again the next week/month. But the weekends were good, got to see heaps. Then they sold out to China. Now I cant find work, I'm apparently too old/overqualified/ inexperienced etc etc. Isn't life great |

The first 3 months - I thought it was great but then I realised that with no money coming in I couldn't do the things I wanted to do - like travel - I didn't want to end up spending all my money & have nothing - then reliant on poverty wages of $224 from the Govt while having to prove that I applied for 40 jobs a month - no thanks. Also - I got bored. I was happy to find a job & go back to work. |

Not being employed is the worst. No income is a huge part of it, but also the boredom, apathy etc.
I'm definitely the sort of person who would want to keep working for as long as possible, as long as it wasn't too physically exerting. Even if I had enough money to live comfortably till I die, I'd still feel like my life was lacking something without a job. |
Title: Re: If you won.............no more work.....!!!! Post by Ajax on Apr 24th, 2016 at 11:06pm

The only thing worse than retirement, would be involuntary unemployment, followed by disablement, and then death.
;D Seriously, though. I've never worked 9-5. Mostly it's self employed, so flexible, but putting in more hours than a 9-5 job for most of the year. And then there are times I work for others, and it's 7.30 to 5. And I enjoy most of it. If I won a shite-ton, or came into money, somehow, I'd be inclined to invest it in more work for myself, I suspect, after upgrading house, car, etc., for myself, and immediate family. |
