Title: How To: Stopping Home Invasions!

Um, how was getting to the latch enough to break in?

Sounds to me like she didn't lock the flyscreen door with the key - just flicked the finger latch on the inside.

All someone has to do is put their fingers through the flyscreen and move the latch and it's unlocked.

Ours has a large thick piece of perspex riveted to the flyscreen door around the handle/lock area so even if someone puts their fingers through the flywire they can't reach the latch.

The attached picture shows our type of flyscreen door and the red line (added by me) shows where the perspex is riveted on.

Yeh, nice.

My 97yo nan has a sliding flyscreen door with an attempted tear by knife in it but it is a scarey thought.

She always locks up though however with a key.

One day she didn't: people came and took the keys off the table and took the car- found with needles inside it and it was like some mini daihatsu thing or something.

Obviously years ago when people actually used needles to do drugs.

I suppose when Heroin comes back into fashion the needle junkies will reign again but, .... scary shite.

She was home when it happened so just pure luck they didn't attack her.

Almost intriguing if I wasn't still shaking at the thought of it.

She actually wants to leave the door unlocked more now... always saying you can't live your life scared and stuff.

bugger.  Still living at home though so you have to give her credit...  8-)

We do remind her we would seriously prefer her to simply lock up mind you and she actually decided we might be on her side and listened. (We hope  :o :o)

If you're home wouldn't a 'break and enter' be called an 'invasion'?

Oh yeh:  very very good point not be missed that one!

;)

Carl D posted his thoughts on the matter and he showed an example of over-protection. Reinforcement of the chief defensive tactic being used to make it stronger and a dog is of course exactly that if not the primary protection reinforced by other means.

Dogs are great!!

You can't leave a hand or a foot loose you know!

Bars on the windows, bars on the doors, deadbolt locks and anything left out overnight is subject to be gone or damaged by morning. That is just a way of life in some places, only the people that live there can change it!

Our perspex has spider web cracks in it from people trying to force it, I'm gonna replace them with aluminium ones so they can't see through them and can't break it.

This is true, i live in a  relatively high crime area but have never been the victim of any break in or attempted break in. Neither have my neighbours.

My place is like a fortress - it has to be in the further out eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
The insurance company demanded it after I had a break in
& burglary 13 years ago.

Haven't had a problem since except as you say -
anything left outside lasts only hours.
Even the $28 beautiful brass hose trigger nozzle was
taken from my garden hose.
I replaced it with a cheap $5 plastic one.
A nice bonsai tree in a little glazed pot lasted about 12 hours.

Crime is out of control in Melbourne.

I'm glad but it can happen so do make sure you haven't got old style Windows that can be simply forced etc...

The worst thing is if your place gets done over in the middle of the day the fact that the neighbour who is always home didn't hear a thing and doors were smashed to get out and stuff!

The appearance is that of: they had plenty of time and it's like they knew no one would hear a thing.

I suppose they have a lookout and mobile phones but the appearance of organisation is what is the scary part.

We had guitars but they can't carry them: they just want jewellery and they seem to not even take passports !

Dumb, dumb, dumb!

The conclusion that i come to, from reading the posts in this thread,         .....is that when a society of men choose to refuse to remove career criminals from living among them,
....then many law abiding citizens will forced to make their own homes into de-facto prisons, as a safe haven for themselves and their families.        !!!!!!!!

Family homes, are becoming de-facto 'prisons' [with locked doors and windows and some with 'security rooms'], because many violent criminals [who should be in goal!] are allowed to walk freely on our streets.        !!!!!!!!

QUESTION;
Wouldn't society [and our children!!! .....and our women!!!!] be safer, if career criminals [and violent criminals] were permanently removed from society ?

Why should 'career' criminals [and violent criminals] be allowed to live among us ?

They shouldn't be.

Why not?  We elect them and even appoint them to public office?

I don't want them living among us, that's for sure.

However, playing the devil's advocate here, have you ever had a career change or know of someone who has?

ian,

If 'Abos' choose to be habitual criminals, they should be removed from society, permanently, imo.

And just like we should remove any other habitual criminal from society, imo.

I've [did, past tense] worked for years with an aboriginal guy.

And he was trustworthy and a 'salt of the earth' type of person.

But, imo, if an aboriginal has the character of being a habitual criminal, then he/she shouldn't get a 'get out of goal free card', simply because he/she is an 'Abo'.      .....that would WRONG, and it would be RACISM!
