Title: Is it really going to be 3 months?
Post by bogarde73 on Mar 24th, 2016 at 11:56am
I have to confess I've not been paying a lot of attention to Australian politics but out of the corner of my eye I've been seeing references to a 3 month election campaign.
Is this really true? Is an election decided definitely and is it going to be a DD?
Or is it all contingent still?

It will be unless the Senate passes the ABCC legislation in April and the belligerent Senators Muir, Lambie, etc have said they won't vote for it despite the government having a mandate to establish the ABCC from the previous election.

"Parliament will sit for three weeks from April 18. It will consider the Australian Building and Construction Commission and Registered Organisations bills, both of which have already been rejected by the Senate.

"Turnbull said if the Senate does not pass the two bills he will advise the Governor-General to call a double dissolution election on July 2. He said there will be no double dissolution if the bills are passed."

http://australianpolitics.com/2016/03/21/turnbull-recalls-parliament-threatens-threatens-double-dissolution.html

They're pretty much in election campaign mode now (just in case the DD goes ahead).

Show us this 'mandate'... if such a thing existed (and it does not with any government, since they are subject to the will of the people and are not simply unconstrained despots)... why then was there this farce of a Royal Commission to try to build up some groundswell of demand for an imposed tyranny over Unions and especially the building industry?

Could this have anything to do with the funding from the Flying Grollo Brothers and so forth that the Libs receive?  Could this simply have a part in the endless hatred of the 'right' here for those 'leftie' Unions and as such be part of a 'class warfare'?

Even if the government feels it has some mythical mandate... it is the right and duty of the Senate  and of individual Senators to say NO.

I thought the central idea of representative democracy was thet we elected people to vote the way WE want? So if a government has a mandate for a particular policy, where is the democratic principle that say senators should ignore it?  and then when the other mob is in power and their policies are all blocked - because they can - is that good or bad?

Mandate has become a difficult topic for me as it seems to conflict on so many levels.

If you accept that there is a mandate I would think that it applies to the major ticket items, I doubt anyone specifically voted for the coalition because of this policy. I don't think you can determine that all the bits and pieces wrapped up in policy fine print is mandated.

Then you have the situation where Labor and virtually all its supporters would have voted strongly against this policy, it is very much hated by thinking people or anyone who believes in any level of fairness or a sense of what is reasonable.

Thirdly you have the senate bound to reject poor policy and this definitely qualifies.

Ask the question does a policy mandate supposedly outweigh the senates responsibility to function as it is meant to ?

This governments problem with the senate stems largely with its propensity to produce poor policy. They by and large left the senate with no other option.

It is a fact that the ABCC produced no benefit while presiding over a drastically reduced health and safety record in the building industry, people died because of it.

Make no mistake this isn't bad policy it is atrocious policy that well and truly deserves to be blocked.

No concern that one of Turnbull's first commitments as PM was that the government would go full term ?

Are honesty and integrity standards you only like to apply to Labor?

The last three Liberals PM's have clearly shown no regard for either.
