SOCIAL services departments are failing in their duty to care for our most vulnerable children, as shocking new figures show almost one in 10 kids in residential care homes in NSW were sexually abused in a single year.

The horrific statistic follows revelations by The Daily Telegraph last week that 41-year-old Coffs Harbour carer Dennis Kelly was facing ­charges of raping a 13-year-old girl living at a care home on the NSW north coast.


The Daily Telegraph has learned that 35 children in residential care facilities in NSW were victims of sexual harm in 2014, about 10 per cent of the total number.

The royal commission has also received a staggering 1200 reports of alleged sexual abuse against children in residential care centres nationally over the past two financial years. Many of these reports were not followed up, often because the victims were too afraid to pursue the matter.

but its a very sick system that appears to be a part of it...dont you think.. these kids think they are going to a better place...instead its more of the same..

Disgraceful indeed.

Who were the perpetrators, why no mention..??

I bet they were homosexual phedophiles.

If it had of been a priest it would have been front page.

There are indeed some weird people out there, and it is a long-established reality that groups such as paedophiles somehow worm their way into these systems and then exploit those with little or no real protection within it.

It was in the 1980's that DFAT had a ring of paedophiles doing overseas trips and postings, and choosing countries in which they could procure child sex.  Look at the churches and other institutions that have theoretically been dedicated to protection of the poor, the downtrodden and the innocent....

The lure of sex may be strong... but it is the duty and responsibilty of those charged with the protection and succour of those least advantaged to ensure that they themselves do not cross those lines.

As a servant to these kids, the Scottish law of double penalty should apply, as in 'theft as a servant', though I tend to prefer life without.

But that's just my personal lizard brain talking... ten to fifteen will suffice, and confiscation of personal property to pay damages to the victims, plus a heavy stint of interrogation to reveal accomplices.

I know this is NOT correct, but with so many instances of reported sex abuse in the news, it can lead one to think that we should be suspicious of most men- of course this is not the case just a perception. I wanted my kids to grow up fast and I hated thinking like that because I wanted my babies to remain babies for as long as possible, but I always feared for their safety when they were out of my sight, I was always fearful for them, so as soon as they turned 18 I kind of breathed a sigh of relief that they were now not of a vulnerable age anymore.

I don't believe in the death penalty except for one group..

I don't blame you for being suspicious of most men you just never know which ones suffer from this illness.

We we're lucky enough to have my wife care for our kids and then when she went back to work the grandparents from both sides took turns in looking after them.

You can never be too cautious with something as precious as the minds and bodies of your own children and children in general.

That's why I'm so against gays and lesbians rearing adopted kids.
