Whooping cough outbreak has Northern Rivers on high alert
http://www.northernstar.com.au/news/whooping-cough-up-1660-on-northern-rivers/2959507/?utm_campaign=Mailchimp+Morning+News&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Northern+Star PARENTS and pregnant women are being warned to be vaccinated against whooping cough after the number of cases on the Northern Rivers has jumped by a massive 1660%. North Coast Assistant Public Heath Director, Greg Bell said there had been 83 confirmed cases of the illness on the Northern Rivers this year, compared with just five at the same time in 2015. Mr Bell said the Northern Rivers was one of the worst areas in NSW for whopping cough cases at the moment. "We have got a large number of cases of whooping cough in our area and it's quite serious," he said. "We are in the middle of a spike and we have been telling people that. "The whole state is on alert for cases of whooping cough." The last major outbreak of whooping cough on the Northern Rivers was in 2008 and 2009. "After that outbreak we were lower than the state average for whooping cough for the past few years," Mr Bell said. Pockets of unvaccinated people in the region was the cause for the rise and fall in whooping cough cases, Mr Bell said, because we do not have herd immunity to the illness on the Northern Rivers. "Whooping cough is always in the community, even when you have got high immunisation rates you still get little waves of the illness," he said. |

The problem is we don't have enough diseases that retrospectively sterilize the Mongos in our community.

It does not prevent the disease in non-immunised people cods.

I am amazed at the ignorance out there about immunisation....are those that refuse it exposing us all/ more so their own children to smallpox and polio as well as whooping cough.?? considering its all FREE in this country.... ::) ::) |

Of all the kooks in all this kooky world these anti VAX people must be the kookiest.
To oppose the greatest advance in disease prevention is mind boggling |

I think you'll find the trend did not emerge until there was a generation that grew up without people dying around them from communicable diseases. It's a lot easier to hold such strange views when death can be abstracted. Their idiocy is a reflection of the success of immunisation. People don't fear this death any more, because they don't see it.
There was a study done measuring people's response to nasty smells from a sewer or rubbish dump. Poor people from slums reacted with a lot more fear than rich, healthy people, because they knew from experience what it means. |

Even if you had a whooping cough shot as a child, you need a booster as an adult.

I think they added the booster to the fluvax a couple of years ago.

See above. The booster is a combination of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). The flu shot is an annual thing, you don't need the pertussis booster annually. |

I would like to ask one or two of them.. how they feel about Ebola for instance.. would they take their chances?????.......what about ZIKA... if the chances of them getting ZIKA whilst pregnant was a strong possibility would they reject any vaccine??.. or would they in effect demand to have it??.... if a vaccine comes out tomorrow to prevent cancer... what would they do???..... |

Vaccination has been linked to autism and other effects that seriously reversed children's development while drug companies acted against the researchers who exposed the links. Drug companies are more interested in sustaining profits than correcting vaccines that are shown to cause very harmful side effects.
Society abandons the victims of vaccines which cause harm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=migzwYOGhCo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkYGSGKI16Q |

A couple of cases of polio amongst the anti-vaxxing crowd will be the next news item.
My sympathy for the affected children would only be outweighed by the contempt I'd feel for their parents. |

Title: Re: anti-vaxxers cause whooping cough outbreak in NSW Post by bogarde73 on Mar 13th, 2016 at 11:41am
The people who are against vaccination just don't accept that there is always a risk with any medication. They expect a risk-free environment.
But it doesn't work that way. You have to stack the miniscule risk, which does exist, against the overwhelming benefit for society as a whole. |

No! Victims of harm from vaccinations face denial by Governments and drug companies and rejection by society. The government and drug companies promote the vaccinations and they should be willing to accept responsibility and bear the costs and support the victims of harm from vaccinations. |

Well I agree with that absolutely. Anyone suffering as the result of a public health program such as vaccination should be fully taken care of by the community. I assume they would be but I don't know. |

The problem is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation Most of the 'claimed' injuries are not from the vaccination. People like Sven think if you get a tetanus booster then get hit by a bus the next day it was the fault of the vaccination. That's because he's a mooncalf. |

He very well may be, but the principle is right if causation is reasonably established.

If you don't want vaccinations fine but do the rest of us a favour and go live in isolation, so you don't go infecting the rest of us when you get whooping cough or whatever!
Find somewhere where you can hunt and fish because you won't be drawing your bludger payment from the government either. |
