Title: What is a fair definition of abuse.. ?
Post by Agnes on Feb 27th, 2016 at 4:18pm
I see some pretty lame stuff pass as abuse in the record abuse thread .Some of it you could hardly call abuse at all could you- Can it still be called abuse if it is true ?

Maybe  we need to vote on some of these entries to ascertain if in fact they could be labelled  abuse at all.

Then remove it from the abuse thread if not found to be true/so. Do it in the interest of truth and fairness.

Define abuse, because there is no clear definition in the record abuse thread.

I will add here and you too if you want any abuse I don't consider abuse.. truth should not be considered abuse for a start.

That is an observation, it is subjective. This is not abuse- you need a dose of cement Bobby.

What is verbal abuse?

Abuse is defined as improper or excessive use of a privilege. Verbal abuse is the excessive use of language to undermine someone's dignity and security through insults or humiliation, in a sudden or repeated manner.

The following are a few examples:
abuse
crude remarks
hooting
inappropriate jokes
innuendoes
insinuations
insolence
insults      invectives
irony
mockery
obscenities
quips
reprimands
reproaches
rumours      sarcasm
scolding
screaming
swearing
teasing
threats
whispering
yelling

"ab - use" comes from the Latin "ab", meaning 'away from'... use... so it is a false use (away from use) of something.... anything.... and thus it is a very broad term....

So if the accepted use is to treat someone with civility.... and you do the opposite... you are 'away' from the accepted use and thus are into ab-use....

Word roots can be funny like that.

The Poms had no streets.. the Irish had sreeds...... the Poms now have streets....

The Poms had no avenues.. the Normans invaded.. they now have avenues.....

You have to remember that English is an accumulation of many different languages.. Latin, French, Gaelic, Briton, Saxon, Angle... you name it..... so if you know  any of those languages you can trace the root of a word....

You raise a good point Agnes. It might help if you considered
Aussie's "abuse" thread not about abuse at all but instead an attempt by him to get eyeballs and gain influence over FD and the GMs.

Jeez booby you do that on a daily basis; your problem is that you are not very good at and you find it frustrating to be constantly humiliated in a battle of wits.

Stop picking on Booby, or else you'll be accused of gay bashing.

The lefties like to ban things they don't like, they claim to be tolerant yet the fact is they are intolerant of anything that is not leftist idiocy.

I reckon the dobbing thread is a laugh, why is it only butthurt lefties who whinge about being abused.

Meanwhile, back in the World of FD's Rules, the word 'abuse' does not appear/occur:

Quote:
Personal criticism

Do not post personal criticism of other members. Do not respond to personal criticism of yourself or other members. This is the biggest problem on OzPolitic. Too many members are easily baited into off-topic personal exchanges. If you participate in any kind of flame war you will be suspended, regardless of who started it or who you think ‘deserved it’.

What's your definition of criticism, Agnes?

So  then why genius are you running a very lengthy record abuse thread, if abuse is not pertinent or relevant to this forum, what point do you have with this whole exercise?

Aussie it is clear there is a big difference between what some of the simpering sooks post in here and call abuse "he called me a whiney princess' and then there is the serious stuff Mothra just posted- none of us could say that was not offensive and not abusive - so there are degrees of so called abuse, and it is fair to say also that the post Mothra made also vastly exceeded what one would class as mere criticism.  Your thread has been turned into a place for wimps to have a little sook- what pleasure they get out of it or what any of them expect to be done about the "abusers"? I have no idea- guess I am just saying it serves no real purpose atm and will not make an ounce of difference to Ozpolitic- that is if you were hoping it would?

You should delete the obvious tattle tale dobbing and keep your thread a lot more authentic or it loses it's integrity completely.

Ummmm.....I thought I posted the Rules, which make no reference to 'abuse.'  That word is just not there.

Address that, Agnes.  When you get to do that, you will likely and very readily understand that whatever the word 'abuse' means......it will obviously include the lesser threshold which is there with mere 'criticism.'

Have you not yet worked out that my intent in that Thread was not just one dimensional?

The Rule sucks, and puts GMods where rock and hard place meet.

Aussie would rather obsess over the meaning of silly bylaws rather than have fun. Let me guess, you belong to a secret society and enjoy wearing funny-looking robes too?

A fair definition would be if the person receiving the said "abuse" feels" like they are being abused and it is serious enough, and is repetitive to the point they seek to complain about it.

We are Australians aren't we, so slinging a little abuse and banter around is in our nature. Also we learn that ignoring it, if it has no consequence and if it just a shite stirrer. it tends to reduce future recurrences.

So .....

Yes, I remember you at SSSF. As well as I can recall you had a reputation as a "troublemaker."

strange how you constantly bring up homosexuality completely unrelated to the topic at hand. Its almost as if you are constantly thinking about gay men. You need to spend some time away from those inner city cafes Greggary,  if only to realise not everything is about gay sex.
