It's the west & north of Europe that has to think seriously now how they will defend themselves.

What is the prime duty of a govt? To protect its people.

It’s a possibility, but unlikely. While those countries voluntarily joined the EU, Russia would have to give equal incentives and ensure their sovereignty.

This is impossible.

When the EU becomes a liability, as it has with its garbage accumulation service, the EU agreements are just so many pieces of paper to be torn up and thrown in their face.

I don't agree. Russia is a part of Europe. It didn't "march" into the Ukraine any more than the US did.

Puitn cant afford a war, Russia is virtually bankrupt. Putins muscle flexing is calculated and designed to take the masses mind off the fact they are comparitively worse off now than virtually any time post war.

Putin may be a political thug, but he is not a militarist. You have to ask what Russia could gain from war in Europe. Not much. What they need are markets. Over running low productivity Eastern Europe would be a huge burden.

Yep that's all part of what they need to do. But you're overlooking that there are other entry points:
- across the sea from Turkey to Greece, and Greece has a huge coastline.
- across the Med to Italy

I know what I would do about seaborne invasion but nobody would have the stomach for it. They're all afraid of EU Courts of Human Rights and International Courts of Justice, so these should be dismantled as a priority.
