Bill Shorten heckled by own crowd at rally protesting health cuts


A rally in Sydney on Saturday protesting cuts to healthcare got heated when members of the crowd chanted 'let them stay' during a speech at Town Hall by Labor leader Bill Shorten.

Protesters chanted the catchphrase as Mr Shorten criticised the federal government's proposed plan to cut funding from pathology and imaging services, including pap smears.

Almost three minutes into his speech, shouts began to emerge from the crowd, eventually turning into the chant 'let them stay'.

Mr Shorten looked unperturbed and continued speaking, although it was hard to hear his speech over the crowd.

One woman, Katie, who was part of the protest, said the crowd was reacting to a "hypocritic" situation.

"People from the crowd started shouting 'Shorten, close the camps' which led to almost unanimous chanting of 'let them stay'," she told Fairfax Media.

"It was disappointing to see Shorten speak about protecting vulnerable people from Medicare cuts whilst hurting the most vulnerable people fleeing war by locking them up in Nazi-like concentration camps." she added.

Labor's policy on refugees is similar to that of the Liberals. Labor supports the current government policy of boat turnbacks and mandatory detention.

Separate protests for the campaign have been held around the country, fronted mostly by Greens politicians.

You're wrong, but even if you weren't, we know who those people are who came by plane and breached or overstayed their Visa because they had to pass through Customs and AQIS to get into the country with a passport and visa. The same cannot be said for the queue-jumping country-shopping illegal immigrants who paid people smugglers thousands of dollars per person to attempt to circumvent the aformentioned Customs and AQIS checks.

Yes he got what Labor deserve.

Labor are so frightened by the political implications of the boats that they are willing to act in the same immoral manner as the liberals prefer as their standard low life behaviour.

Labor should understand that nobody likes a filthy grub and to do the right thing on this one occasion will not have an impact enabling the boats to return.

People who have any conscience at all would support them to act in a humane manner. This would be a win for Labor if they took the risk.

A: Total open boarder policy, come one, come all.

B: Labor Model. Broadcast that arriving by boat is a viable immigration path to Australia resulting in 1000s of deaths at sea and lowering the threshold to qualify as a refugee (you're brown, you're a refugee) and the result is all the refugee spots are taken by Paki taxi drivers who yearn for a better life.

C: Take a hard but pragmatic approach by having zero tolerance for boat arrivals but the result is our refugee intake places go to the most disparate and in need from the worst trouble spots around the world, oh yeah less deaths at sea.

So they are having bamboo shoots stuck under their fingernails, are they? They're being waterboarded? They're being deprived of sleep and food, are they? No, they aren't. They also aren't being forced to stay there. They can come and go from the camp as they please and they can also elect to take a taxpayer funded flight back to their homeland any time they so desire. It's far from being a gulag or concentration camp, so just quit with that nonsense and call them what they are - detention centres.

NO ONE has said they're illegal asylum seekers, you dumb sh!t. We know it is not illegal to seek asylum. That's not what they're being detained for! They're being detained for attempting to enter Australia illegally (i.e. no passport or visa or even a licence to identify them) in breach of our immigration laws and are held while their claim for asylum is processed and their identity is verified. Talk to the Navy and Customs personnel who had to pull dead babies and children from the water between 2008-13 like that and they'll break your jaw and then tell you that you know nothing about the trauma they've suffered as a result of pulling those dead people from the sea. One of my brothers mates that he went to high school with joined the Navy - Brendan is his name - and was assigned to the patrol boats. The stuff he told us that he saw and smelled is truly horrific. He stayed in the Navy, but many of his friends did not and a lot of those sailors now suffer PTSD and other anxiety-related mental issues.

If overstaying a visa was legal, why bother having time limits on visas at all? Why does the Department of Immigration deport everyone who is caught without a valid visa? Because they are here ILLEGALLY. A visa that has expired is not valid.

Well, you don't spill boiling water on infants in cots.  A toddler may pull a pot off the stove or tip over a kettle but not an infant in a cot. That is done by an adult.


ANd yes, I am suggesting that a lot of the self-=harm and child harm by detainees is deliberate and done to force an advantageous outcome. WHen family members were not permitted to accompany injured detainees to the mainland, "self-harm" plummeted to zero.


Secondary movement economic migrants - whether from Indonesia to Australia or from Turkey to Europe - who ditch their IDs are not exactly honest and upright people.  I wouldn't put anything past them.
