Title: By 2050 oceans will contain more trash than fish Post by Laugh till you cry on Jan 20th, 2016 at 10:59pm
The slow demise of the planet by the consequences of human greed is unseen and unheralded and is unstoppable.

This is where we need a better form of capitalism .
This MUST be driven from the CONSUMER. Dont blame business. Consumers must start buying good quality, long lasting , beautiful things and go for quality not quantity. This will turn off the manufacture of disposable junk , save the planet, and also give workers a chance to become "master craftsmen" instead of churning out garbage which is just stocking fillers for a population that attaches its ego to its possessions (or number of possessions). The poor are the worst consumers. they buy the big macs and deforrest the amazon to make patties. they buy the 10 dollar shoes and shirts which they throw away after 6 months. the poor need to buy less junk and more quality. They could , for example, spend their income on an on line education course....this would create NO waste and would lead to self improvement. |

It's worse because sea life and other animals are dying trying to consume this waste thinking that it is legitimate food.
Stupid human race destroying its own food supply :( Of course they can't make bio-degradable plastics because that would cost more and upset greedy share holders so they would end up with less printed plastic money :( |

The author doesn't appear to have read the report, if the pictures above are any indication.
' Today nearly everyone, everywhere, every day comes into contact with plastics – especially plastic packaging, the focus of this report.' http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_The_New_Plastics_Economy.pdf |

Sometimes consumers aren't given that choice. |

The report also cites -
'Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean' reported http://science.sciencemag.org/content/347/6223/768 From the abstract - 'Plastic debris in the marine environment is widely documented, but the quantity of plastic entering the ocean from waste generated on land is unknown. By linking worldwide data on solid waste, population density, and economic status, we estimated the mass of land-based plastic waste entering the ocean. ' |

Denialists such as lee would deny their own existence if somebody was prepared to argue that issue with them. |

The old denialist card. Just never question the orthodoxy. 'economic status' - what do they do with that? Low economic status equals more waste eg Phillipines and the photos of the Pacific Garbage Patch. Or High economic status - more money , more waste? |
