Title: How pathetic is the ABC's online News site?
Post by Lord Herbert on Jan 20th, 2016 at 7:23am
The same stories are listed down the page, day after day after day.

Bone-bloody-lazy.

Compare it to the UK's online Daily Mail which has a score of fresh news stories and magazine-pieces every 24 hours of the year.

When are we every going to get someone with the guts to close down the ABC all together?

Nobody really needs statistics ?

Over rated ?

Most conservatives do not know what they mean anyway.

I find the ABC reasonably informative and I like some of the stories hanging around for a time, I don't go there all that often.

For ABC news I mostly do a topic search on google and read the ABC article on the topic. They do cover most current events in a timely manner with less bias that the commercial product.

Dna -- I suppose you have a point there, and that's because the commercial TV stations are an abomination when it comes to their news bulletins.

Several times - just this last week, the opening Headline News has been a car crashing into a shopfront in Sydney, or into a roadside pole ... then switching to a story about a house on fire - with seemingly ENDLESS 'on-site' interviews with neighbours, Fire Brigade personnel, the police, a passing stray dog, a local shop-owner, and then back to the studio for more commentary.

But this last week's Channel NINE news service has specialised in something quite new to me ...

... There's a story about - yes - you've guessed it - a car crash somewhere ... followed immediately by a story with video footage of something serious and that has depth, such as Merkel in trouble, or billions being wiped off the international Share Markets, or North Korea letting off nuclear-capable rockets, etc etc ... AND THEN, the very next story plunges right back into the abyss of inanity by showing us yet ANOTHER car-crash story ...

I've sat on the lounge with my mouth open every time I've witnessed this insane news programming.

Their columnists have no respect for political correctness or the Leftwing luvvies.

Miranda Devine
Piers Ackerman
Andrew Bolt
Tim Blair
Simon Benson

... and others. They don't hide behind political correctness as the Rotherham people did, or the Cologne police/ city fathers/ media/ et al - did.

It costs a billion dollars of the taxpayers' hard-earned cash each year. It's nothing but the propaganda arm of the Labor Party - just as is the BBC in the UK and CNN in the US.

Once again - props to SBS for practicing the priorities with their news service.

Starts with the serious stuff, and then slowly tapers off towards the end with Footy Hero stories and bush fires. I don't think they touch car crashes or someone's bedroom catching on fire.

Yet your title says 'ABC's online News site'

since when are the beckhams, or any of the other page 3 girls, news? I think your real problem is that you don't understand what news sites are meant to show. Gossip and saucy photos are not news. If you want that go to your local lawn bowls club and chat up the old girls.

To the right? You need to watch Q and A. They even pad the audience to the left.

But Herb's "nothing but propaganda" is flat out wrong. ABC has some high quality programming that has nothing to do with politics.

pad the audience?  ;D ;D ;D
audience numbers are shown before every episode, and they're always evenly split. There was another thread last week showing how the ABC had stopped reporters from questioning Turnbulls NBN. If that isn't leaning to the right, nothing is

I have brought this subject up myself before, a news site with a virtually unlimited budget that provides a worse service than free sites, if we went in there and smashed up their coffee machines they would be out of action for months.

1. They don't have anything near an unlimited budget.

2. The ABC is a free site.

I agree, but the ABC is not in the business of online media. It's a national broadcaster.

Online is the business model of the UK Daily Mail. They'll be closing the presses down in a few years and publishing solely online.

There are other influences in the ABC's funding of online news. One of them is the panic that exists in the private media. Media owners like Murdoch see the entry of the national broadcasters into online news as unfair competition, and yes, people do tend to go to national broadcasters for important news. I would not be surprised if this view is shared by some on the ABC board. I would not be surprised if it influences funding.

The UK Daily Mail is no comparison - this is a private tabloid. You'd do better to compare ABC online to the BBC.

Thanks for that, Karnal - very good post with points to contemplate there.

I'm wondering if 'National Broadcasters' - be it in the UK or here, haven't simply gone past their Use By Date and are now heading at a rapid rate towards redundancy due to the many-and-varied alternative news sources available on the 'Web.

I really don't quite understand what purpose they serve any more, besides being an employment hub for a few hundred luvvies with Bachelors in literature, journalism, or Media Studies.

It's become a One Billion Dollar employment agency for a Chosen Few.

There was a time when these NB's were supposed to - (but rarely ever did) - represent an impartial, non-partisan, middle-of-the-road news service that was politically neutral and acceptable to both the Left and Right of the political divide.

That original 'mission statement' and Manifesto has increasingly been trampled upon and booted into the bleachers ever since whole troops of Leftwing activist journalists started coming off the university production-lines like so many sausages after the Second World War.

" In the past four years Government funding has risen by more than $165 million, or 20 per cent, to a record $1024 million"

link

"The ABC received A$1,030 million in the May 2012-13 federal budget, supplemented by an additional A$158.2 million from commercial and other income streams".

link

link

One billion dollars per year is an obscene amount of taxpayer's hard-earned cash just for keeping this dinosaur from collapsing and burying its rat's nest of liberal-progressive luvvies.

I want my money back.
