88 storeys?  Sh1t!

I heard of one there that's 89, ... but that's another story.

Boom boom!

Seriously though, I used to love the Gold Coast.

Now, I turn down free accommodation.

It ain't what it used to be.

I can't understand the article. Are they complaining about more high rise buildings going up or what? Surely the whole attraction is those high rise residentials.

And what's the industry there - only tourism?

I remember a news report which showed a Japanese jewelry shop there that used to angrily throw out anybody but Japanese tourists off the tourist buses - even though it's illegal to refuse people service unless they're drunk or drugged.

Perhaps "former city architect Philip Follent" didn't leave on good terms.

Most favoured eldest Grand Daughter lives there because she has employment to assist funding a Uni course.  Her employment is not tourist related, however the GC will have reached critical mass where just basic providing for the people who are there means jobs.

I sold my beach side Home on the Sunshine Coast not least because one day, a day no-one can predict, it will be drowned.

I've only seen the Gold Coast once, in the summer of 1963/64.  The impression it left me with was of a place that was gaudy, noisy and full of ugly buildings.  I see things haven't changed much in a way.

Rubbish.  In 63/64.......there was no high rise.........no ugly buildings and Australian families flocked there.  There was no International Airport.......no highway as it exists now and Clem Jones had not yet even looked at the place.

It was neither 'gaudy, noisy or full of ugly buildings.'

I didn't say there was any high rise or International Airport.  It was ugly and gaudy by the standards of the day.

Well, for starters I would have to agree that it is not gaudy in that photo, after all it is in black and white.

I remember when 13, going to the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise, Caville Avenue circa 1967, where it has a much nicer memory of a 'beachy holiday' feeling. Absolutely loved it.

I also recall only a few short years later in 1971, they were starting them high rise buildings (they had this speaker facing the beach, and remember Itchycoo Park playing as I walked along the beach. 8-)

Those guys that were working on the buildings would always do the wolf whistles at us gals!

The only remnant that is very reminiscent of the 1960's is that motel The Sands. I hear others talking of it needing to be demolished as it's an eyesore, and a new building go in it's place.

Surfers Paradise has become such a touristy city, it's mad, takes away that wonderful beachy feel (and all them tall buildings cast shadows over the sand so you get no afternoon sun!).
The hubby loves it mad and bustling, I, for some reason, don't, except for the shops....which the hubby hates  ;D
And parking meters, hardly ever see a Meter Maid in gold bikinis putting in any money! ;D

Some years back, we met a blonde bronzed female real estate agent, whom said, she was one of the few original framily of Surfer's Paradise left, and yes, you will know them....they speak with 'aye' or 'eh' at the end of every sentence ;D

Will be going up there soon in the next couple of weeks, if I spot a meter maid, I will get the hubby to have a photo with them and send it to ya! ;D ;D 8-)

I think it was 2012 last I went (can't remember now)....and that Caville Avenue was all dug up with temp fencing all around.
Will like to see what they have done with it all now.

They are all employed looking over their shoulders for the tsunami.....

Krakatoa?  No - but I sure injured the toenail.... wait until NZ blasts off and then comes the 100 foot wave to sweep the halls of inequity out to sea......

(excerpt from Gold Coast Taxi Driver.. a Grappler Studios Production starring Robbie Dinero, a local boy made good, ay?)...

(voice over)... The tidal wave comes in and sweeps the garbage from the streets.... but the stench remains.... the stench of decay and corruption .....for a short time the sharks are replaced by real sharks.... no less vicious..... take you for an arm and a leg in no time flat....

Surfers Paradise is tatty and over rated. I've seen stacks of beach towns better than the Gold Coast. The town strip is a shocker, ratty looking tourist traps.

The atmosphere of the place is decidedly down market. All it is, is a bunch of high rises on the water with a crappy Casino thrown in.

Pass

Hard to argue with any of that.

It really has nothing much going for it.

We used to go to Surfers every Christmas holidays.  I was too young to get out and about up there though and I just remember it as being colourful.  Everything was painted in pastels.  Lots of pink buildings etc.

I lived at Palm Beach on the GC from 1965 to 1967. I was 10 yrs old when we went there.

It was a great place to live, a safe place to live with plenty to see & do.

I wouldn't give you two bob for the over commercialised, high rise, feral/crime ridden dump it is now.

My sentiments exactly - first saw the joint in the sixties our of Canungra - didn't like it then, don't like it now.  My kids live on Tamborine Mount and have a view to the 'strip' - the locals up there in the Gods call the high rise 'the tombstones', which is what they look like from up there.

It's still a great place with lots to see and do. Sure, its over commercialized, but that's because its such a great place. People wouldn't move here otherwise. Crime is no better or worse than anywhere else of equal size.

The locals up there (sic) look down on the low-life on the coast..... they don't want their kids to go down there even for schoolies.

The only real drawback is that the two major roads up are car killers - many a car has worn out doing that daily, but once through the inversion layer the air is breathable and clean and cooler....

All the locals down here avoid surfers during schoolies too! The 17, 18 and 19 yr olds might get excited, but everyone runs away.

Yes, I had a relative living up there a few years ago.

Very nice.

I think one of the Daddo brothers still lives up there.

Clean air, fresh spring water (I've seen trucks filling their tanks up there), wild brumbies, art galleries, and fudge factories.

A wonderful part of the country.

It sure isn't what it used to be, which was what it attracted so much attention and tourism in the first place for what it was, now it is all changed, and the feeling is so different.

But here are some old post cards I have, and what people used to do for a living (make postcards for instance!) ;D

water skiing at sea world

oil tan spraying on the beach so people can cook better in the sun! (now it's different, more like 50 blockout!)

Magic Mountain (now no more)

Here are some photos I took when I was 13 and had my first kodak camera...still learning about how to take photos without the thumb getting in the way, at least I didn't chop people's heads off like my dad always did!  ;D

The first pic was those Shangri-la boat tours to Stradbroke Island, I think the name of this boat was Sabrina by the looks of it, but I can't remember.
Here is the picture of the crew that used to work on these boats.
And a picture of Jack Evans Pet Porpoise pool in Coolangatta.

Circa 1967

There are lots of "jobs" on the Gold Coast if you are a young, attractive, female. Earns a LOT more than waitressing.  ;)

I know somebody whose daughter, age 18 (finished Year 12) decided to "head off to the Big Smoke" after an argument with her Mother.  She ended up on the Gold
Coast and got chosen to do "modelling".  This lass was a natural blonde (Finnish background) and 5'10". Innocent but got caught up in the so-called "Escort" thing.

Eventually, her Mother got this kid to return to Canberra but ...... she was used to getting all this MONEY and hooked up with a bloke who was into this stuff (legal in Canberra) so she "worked" for him for as while.

EVENTUALLY this lass realised what she was doing (she was NEVER on drugs) and went to University and is now with the IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT as an EL. She is still only about 32. Travels overseas with the Department and all that.

She was once a PROSTITUTE.

And?

Prostitutes are people too, you know.

When/How did she get the necessary security clearance?  AGSVA must have bent over backwards if she did get it.

Thank goodness she ended up on the straight and narrow after all that, but her experience could be of value in her new employment perhaps.

Whenever we go up there, I greet people of all ages, and there are police on duty of all ages, elder women at the front desks of the apartments to let for holidays, or manage for people that own them.

I am sure many older people own the businesses and shops, otherwise how can a young one do so? It would be so expensive, and the rates would be a killer.

Then there is always some construction work going on, never have I been up there when it wasn't!
And that would include all age groups including supervisors, engineers and so forth.
And in the real estate game, there are many middle age and older gents and women in the industry.

It is a city, that Surfers Paradise and Gold Coast surrounds, it is busy, and has to have many working within for it to function as such.

Perhaps, I could take photos of 'workers' around the area, something of a photographic challenge :)

Damn. I'm no longer young or attractive. Life is so unfair in a misogynistic, sexist society.

*GASP!* -- NOOOOOOOOO .... ??!!!  ;D ;D ;D You had me guessing right up until the end when you finally blew her cover ...

If she doesn't still do the occasional moonlighting as a .. er ... 'model' ... I'll eat my cat. Travels overseas ... ?  8-) Keeps her knees together all the time ... ? Riiight .... And my name's Rumplestitskin with a cherry on top.

She knows she's sitting on a gold mine ... while drawing a paltry wage as a government drone. And only 4 weeks holiday a year. And her job traps her in an office all day, every day.

Certainly will!

I've got photos that will show you the ENORMOUS parrot that I used to stuff into my budgie-smugglers before I would go strutting along the beach to the sounds of gasps and moans from the girls and the gays ...  8-)

What a disappointment that was. Expecting something really arty, colourful, very much a touristy enticing place, since we were there last in 2012, and all that temp fencing and digging up of Caville Avenue, only to find in the last few days whilst up there for a flying visit, that it was all dull grey tiling, with verandahs of restaurants encroaching upon it, making it look smaller and insignificant.
The feeling I had, was it is done intentionally like that, so that people don't feel inclined to linger around on the outside much, morsoe to be in the shops or restaurants.

Such a shame, had so much potential. We bumped into an old local that lived there since 1951, and we were discussing all the changes and how it used to be so colourful, and had a huge chess playing area etc.

Anyway, didn't see any gold bikini clad meter maids, (probably because we were there by 8am, and parking fees start at 9 am!)  :)
But I did get a pic of this natural looking bird walking around  8-)

BTW, that archway thingy, there used to be a digital stand next to it, with date and time, couldn't see that anymore.

Yes!

I've always thought the same.

I first saw the Auschwitz sign a couple of years ago, and the Surfers Paradise sign came to mind as soon as I passed under it.

Fair go ... that's surfers, not 'the gold coast'. The Gold Coast has so much more to offer than Surfers. Most locals only ever visit surfers when interstate friends come to visit. I'm approx. a 30 min walk from surfers and I only get there once or twice  year. I'd recommend Burleigh over surfers any day of the week. Hinterland is great, Southport Parklands, Straddie ... unless you're 18 and into clubbing, surfers is the last place I'd recommend.

I think you summed it up well John, but I have always had a thing for Surfer's Paradise, back in the days of the 1960's, but then again, I was a young teen and it did appeal to me then, as it appeals to teens of today.
But, I am still disappointed with Caville Avenue looking so dull.

Anyway, I think Burleigh is beautiful, and as we have our place near Runnaway Bay, that area appeals to me moreso for shopping, like Harbour Town, and in that Swarovski shop had these amazing earings that were $245, down to $62, and I just had to have them!

And the most amazing thing, I asked how long it had been going for, and was told 6 months, is a tram from Broadbeach to...umm...I forgot....was it Southport? But a tram! Wow, becoming so Melbournized eh? ;D

Here it is, probably the most colourful thing going through Surfers at this point in time ;D

At the moment it's Broadbeach to The new gold coast hospital. It's been running for well over a year now.

Stage II is in planning, extending south from Broadbeach to the airport and north from the hospital to Helensvale train station.

Over a year it's been running? Better tell the lady at the information desk in the middle of Caville Avenue that fact! :)

That is impressive, when it goes from the airport.
Right now, it is $10 for a day ticket to travel all day on the tram and buses. And it extends to the next day till 3pm (well that is what I was told at the info desk at the Coolangatta Airport.

The shuttle bus was $21 per person, so this tram and bus for $10 pp will be a hit.

It's incredible how time (and increasing population) make for changes, and very well needed changes.

With this stage II in plan, how long do you think it will be before it eventually be done?

they normally hire backpackers who have only been here for a few weeks  :D :D I rode the tram on opening day ... it was well over a year ago

stage one should have been airport to surfers .... of course the politicians got it wrong .... again

originally the plans were that it be completed before the 2018 commonwealth games, however the govt. pulled some funding (they've now given some funding back)  that delayed everything ... they'll need to get a move on if that is still the deadline they hope to achieve

Well, the promotion for the 2018 games is ummm....much like the Caville Mall....played down a bit...this is all I saw of it, with not much else written, except for a year on a surfboard. But I suppose they will liven things up a bit as the date gets nearer?

This was an interesting bit of info with photo, there are all these old photos near the surf life savers hut, here is Caville Avenue (or Caville Mall) back in the days of au-naturale, in 1918, so when the games happen in 2018, this photo was taken 100 years ago. Fascinating to compare.
