Title: Dick Smith's big mistake Post by bogarde73 on Jan 15th, 2016 at 8:09am
The man I mean, not the store.
Decades ago when he sold the business, he sold his name with it. Maybe that was the dealmaker and he had no option, I don't know. Now he's stuck with a lot of the ill will because there is a huge number of people out there who still think it's his store. Now he's making noises about what awful people they were who bought it most recently and made a pretence of tarting it up. There is even some talk of a lawsuit. But that would likely be a waste of time. The people concerned probably don't even live here and anyway they would have only been the front for the money people who made off with the hundreds of millions and left about $400 million debt behind. So don't get involved in a lawsuit Dick, you'll just do your dough. |

I doubt he had a choice ... the people buying the store weren't going to give away the goodwill associated with the brand 'Dick Smith', not without it greatly affecting Dicks sale price. |

I was thinking much the same thing.
The new owners of the business, keeping and using his good name he made in the industry. There should have been a stipulation that after a year or so, once the new business owners got a foothold, should have applied for a name change. There is a health industry I am a member of, that had their name right up there on the corporate ladder world wide, and recently, changed hands and changed their name, and the products names, this was one area where it should have stayed the same, because it wasn't anyone's personal name, like Dick Smith had. I feel a bit put off since this health industry made too many huge changes, can't even log on the old way. I have a feeling business is plummeting a bit, and they should have kept the same name, with the same product labels that we all knew so well. Funny thing is, a name change can work for some corporate businesses, but not all. As for Dick Smith Electronics, perhaps an update in name should have been the go. Now his own personal name seems tainted. |

I went into Dick Smith's two days ago to buy a TV cable. All they had was 6 meter lengths for $29.00. So I went over to K Mart and got a 3 meter cable for $5.00.

Dick Smith is a global warming crank like Al Gore, he flies around in his personal helicopter while exhorting others to go without in order to save the planet. Also, now that he has cashed in his capitalist chips and cleaned up he is anti capitalism. |

Well all of his opinions may not be the same as yours or mine but that doesn't change my view that he is a great Australian of his generation.
He started a business from scratch as a kid and built it into a huge successful operation which served many customers well for a long time. After he decided to leave that behind - and I doubt he had any idea it would end in the chaos & scandal it has many years later - he went on to render valuable service in the air safety field and other business ventures. And in the twilight of his life I find it sad that he would be feeling, as I'm sure he must, that his name is being associated with this mess. But that's just my opinion. |

OK sure, I agree that he was a great Australian once, a real go getter that we could all look up to, but now he has morphed into a hypocrite, I guess the ever changing circumstances that one finds themselves in shapes their thinking. Its like if I was dropped into Saudi Arabia and surrounded by a bunch of sword wielding donkey rapists that demanded that I convert to islam or get arse reamed and beheaded instead, I'd be like where do I sign ;D |

It's more or less the same attitude of banks in this country supporting house flippers rather than entrepreneurship. In the end the punters got the business they deserved. |

Private equity paid 90 million before it was offloaded onto the gullible public. They must have realized they bought a lemon so they offloaded it onto the gullible public and then preceded to divest themselves of their shareholdings before the punters wised up to it. |

He sold the store with a name bearing his own name. If he had started it under a different name, that name would have stayed as well. I very much doubt anyone is blaming the actual Dick Smith for this fiasco. I know that people can be extraordinarily dim, at times, but that would be a stretch, even for them. |

It's often the way with new owners of an already successful business. They think they know better and then go ahead and change everything from what it was to something new... and then it fails. Not always of course, but more often than not. |

It's more or less a reflection of lazy aussies and greedy landlords who just want to profit from other peoples hard work in china by adding absolutely no value in shifting boxes. It seems to be a common business model in this country which is why any backyard ebayer can compete quite easily. Just ask your good mate harvey norman. He's another one that adds zero value to shifting boxes and silly aussies fall over themselves to be a part of it. |

its sad.... but then I get rubbished because I didnt support it... I did when I wanted my computer and then a modem just recently..but if I dont want anything like they sell its hard to support them..
I dont think its right places like ALDI get into everything....its very damaging.. I mean they came here as a grocery chain.. and now they are all shoved to one side whilst they chip in on every other business in the country....we will go in one day and see used cars for sale ... why not?. >:( >:( |

I mean what the hell is wrong with you to think that you need to support a company just because a whole lot of fickle aussies bought shares in it ? I mean it's a business that anyone in their right mind would not touch with a barge pole !! And as for Aldis being able to compete with them it's just further proof why you would not invest one cent into a business like that !! |
