A planned West Australian Nationals fundraiser aboard an Australian Navy warship has been cancelled after it was deemed an inappropriate use of military facilities.

The $1000 per head fundraiser was scheduled to take place on board the HMAS Perth at the Stirling Naval Base this month, with Nationals leader Terry Redman and deputy Mia Davies among the special guests.

Nationals MP and organiser Paul Brown said the decision was made on Tuesday to cancel the fundraiser after an internal process deemed it an inappropriate use of Commonwealth infrastructure.

"We probably should have identified that earlier," Mr Brown told AAP on Thursday.

Federal defence minister Marise Payne said neither she nor the Australian Navy had knowledge of the event.

"Defence facilities should not be used for political fundraising purposes and it is regrettable that the original invitation was issued," Ms Payne told AAP.

The warship fundraiser was also criticised by the WA Opposition defence spokesman Paul Papalia, who labelled the private event a "disgrace".

"A non-partisan, apolitical defence force is a central pillar of the Australian democracy. Everyone knows this, the military know it," he said.

"I think the Navy would be offended and outraged if they knew that the National party of WA were intending to conduct a party fundraiser on board Navy assets."

Mr Brown said he had purchased the Naval luncheon package at a Royal Flying Doctors Service fundraiser last year, and had hoped to use the 20-person event as a National party fundraiser, but did not inform the Navy.

"The RFDS know I'm a member of parliament but we didn't specifically highlight that we were using this as a fundraiser and that's why we then came to the conclusion that it was inappropriate to use HMAS Perth for this kind of event."

Mr Brown said he would now invite disadvantaged children and families from his electorate to the event on board HMAS Perth.

Not good.  Right decision eventually.  Gee.....I wonder if the same standard applies to the Speaker's Rooms in Parliament where, if rumour is of any value, Big Jobs Bishop hosted Liberal Party fundraisers?

It is not her Office.  It is a taxpayer provided facility in the publicly owned Parliament House.  Do you believe the rumours or was it all just scuttlebutt?

This isn't the only time the Coalition parties have been caught using inappropriate means to raise funds since the Abbott-led Coalition won in 2013.

* This use of military facilities by the nationals for a National party fundraiser (cancelled)
* Issuing an invitation to a current Royal Commissioner to speak at a Liberal party fundraiser (cancelled)
* Bronwyn Bishop's use of a helicopter to attend a fundraiser for the Victorian Liberals that she then charged to the taxpayer
* Bronwyn Bishop's use of the Speaker's office to host a fundraiser for the Liberals
* Hockey and the North Sydney Forum - implicated for corrupt misconduct in ICAC

And this won't be the last!

Don't forget Atherton.... he was the honcho then and much of the fault was laid at the feet of maintenance and training and equipment.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Greetings Fellow National!

You are cordially invited to a polite soiree on my small and unpretentious yacht,

HMAS Perth

The purpose of the soiree is to raise money for my election campaign, and thus the small cost of $1000 a head, and all catering will be undertaken at Navy expense using Navy stewards, who will serve rum and bilgewater, which, alongside buggary and the lash, I am assured is a tradition in the Royal Australian Navy.

RSVP - and BYOWhips - Buggary provided free of charge.

I do but try, gentlemen and ladies.  I can never exceed the excess of those we pay handsomely to govern over and watch over us..... ;D  ;D  ;D

my ex-wife and mother of my children received a phone call before after the Atherton Tablelands disaster, asking where I would like to be positioned at the memoriai service .. and, afterwards, asking why I could not be there... she rang me to tell me this while I was laid up in a Veterans hospital with a busted knee that took three years to recover .... I have ZERO time for politicians and their antics...

Why not, what else would all those inland farmers do with a Navy ?

Maybe they could have marketed it as a trial for a commercial navy enterprise in a move towards self funding the armed forces ?

Navy nearly used for Nationals fundraiser

Probably better than some of the use they have been put to with respect to intercepting refugees on the high seas.

I say why not if it was just a boat sitting there doing nothing as long as the nats were paying the going rates and supplying their own requirements.

On the other hand it would bee real funny to see the ship sent to sea on a surprise drill or something. They typically have to be ready for emergency deployment and do get tested. (Like a fire Drill).

At one time my team had their server support contract and one of their ships went to sea with one of my team members on board. Lucky they didn't go far.
