Title: Dubai's Fireworks more important than Hotel fire Post by red baron on Jan 3rd, 2016 at 2:29pm
The news from Dubai that the 5 Star Address Downtown Hotel was aflame made little difference to the planned New Year's Eve Fireworks display a short distance across town.
It was like some sort of tragic comedy watching the television networks switching between the Hotel fire and the Fireworks display. How no one was killed in the fire is something miraculous. There were reports of people climbing over each other is a frenzied exodus down the stairs of the building. Glad we don't have to depend on the type of fire service that was in operation in Dubai. Guess if one burns they'll just reach into their bottomless bucket of money and build a new one. Wouldn't like to be caught in a fire upstairs in Dubai and counting on the local fire brigade to get me out. Still.....the crowd had a great time at the mega fireworks display, whilst the fire merrily burned on at the Address Hotel. |

The towering inferno appears to have ripped through the majority of the hotel.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which ran up at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper. Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene. Early reports suggested there were no injuries. A huge fireworks display kicked off at the Burj Khalifa as smoke poured from the nearby hotel. ‘There are no injuries, thank God … of course, it will not affect the celebration,’ Major General Rashed al-Matrushi, general director of the Dubai Civil Defence, told the live broadcast earlier this evening Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2015/12/31/inferno-rips-through-dubai-skyscraper-hotel-5594757/#ixzz3w9u00x00 Yes thank God the fire didn't interrupt the Main Game....The Fireworks. Could you see Sydney fireworks going ahead if the Hilton hotel was ablaze from stem to stern?
Only in Dubai baby! |

Yes, I could. Without a shadow of a doubt. Take away Australians' fireworks, and there would be a riot. However, that's not what I'm discussing. You are implying that the local fire department at Dubai was incompetent. Why were they, exactly? |

Allowing the fireworks to go ahead when there was every possibility of the fire spreading in a chain reaction happening across the city.
Negligence on a grand scale..they got away with it...unbelievable!!!!! Talk about fiddling whilst ..Dubai burns! dubai_fire_3.jpg (6 KB | 37

They got away with the distinct possibility of the whole damned joint going up. You really think that what happened in Dubai would be tolerated by any other Fire Department in the civilised world. :D :D :D

From the footage I saw, there wasn't much likelihood of that. The city isn't that high density (like NY, for example). |

Putting it into perspective, how many people were rescued by NYFD on 9/11.
It seems Dubai FD didn't do too badly. At least they got there. |

God knows. Probably thousands, if you count the automatic processes put in place to suppress fire, and evacuation plans they ensure are prepared for implementation.

BTW, the same is true in Dubai. It's a credit to planning, that the building didn't burn out completely, and especially that no one was killed.

Thing about Dubai is like Las Vegas, it's not real, just an expensive wonderland for people with too much money.
I'm sure they all enjoyed the fire and the fireworks. |
