Title: True or false?
Post by Aussie on Dec 26th, 2015 at 9:37am
Not one golf tee did I get yesterday, but I did get a small metal box containing a pile of small cards upon which 'crazy urban myths' are printed.  The blurb says...'People do the strangest things and here are some of the weirdest.  Whether they are real or not is open for debate, but it'll make for fascinating discussion.'

Here is the first:

A dead man travelled back and forth across Indonesia on a train for most of a day before anyone realised he'd died.

Post by Aussie on Dec 26th, 2015 at 7:07pm
I reckon that one is bullshit.  Elsewhere, Monk pointed out it is very unlikely that anyone could go on said train trip in what is the archipelago of Indonesia.  I've not checked google...........but I reckon that one is false.

Next:

The musician Frank Zappa called his daughter 'Moon Unit.'

I think he called his son dweezil, so I think she got the better end of it.

Okay.  I'm not checking as that would be beside the point.  Next.

Ostriches hide from predators by burying their heads in the sand.

Frank Zappa certainly called his daughter Moon Unit. She goes by Moon these days.

Ostriches don't bury their heads in the sand. That's a myth.

They used to have a ferry from Darwin to Indo and you could find ferries to the Asian mainland ... I was planning a world trip by small van... but the bastards have vanished the ferry service from Darwin...

It would be hard to travel by train all across Indo..... but on one island maybe...

Pardon me, Sir.. but are you asleep?  I think we missed your stop...... Sir?  SIR?

The ferry. you can travel across Java by train though, I did the jakarta to Yogyakarta train trip not so long ago and there are still existing steam train routes in Sumatra, or there used to be,

They use ferries for the trains?  I looked up the ferry from Darwin to Indo and it said 'no more'..... plenty of ferries in the islands and up to the Philippines.....

Title: Re: True or false?
Post by ian on Dec 27th, 2015 at 1:38am
No. You can travel java by train, thats about it, you cannot island hop except by boat. Sumatra has some train routes. I went Jakarta to jogyakarta because I wanted to see Borobodur. It was well worth it. Dont even consider travelling Indo by car, there are almost no car ferries and none between the major islands of java, Sumatra, Sulawesi etc.

Patients in a particular bed of a hospital's intensive care unit always seemed to to die at 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning.  When officials investigated they discovered that the part-time janitor was unplugging their life-support machines in order to plug in his vacuum cleaner.

Impossible to prove but also sounds like it has a ring of truth. I volunteer with an old Pom, came here at 15, he's 70 now, and thought almost all girls in Australia were named Sheila.

Dweezil's birth name was Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa.

The hospital wouldn't allow his parents to register the name 'Dweezil'.

His name was legally changed to Dweezil Zappa when he was about five years old.

Moon Unit was indeed named Moon Unit at birth.

False (based on my own personal experience).

I've found some that swirl both ways, in both hemispheres.

Untrue unless it's subtle. We had a tiger skin(with head attached) in our lounge room for most of my childhood, when it started losing it's fur I only saw one coloured skin.

Funny, had a couple of girls freak out on seeing it. It was apparently frightening. It's tail was on the ceiling, the body pelt was across the wall, legs spread metres, with the head on the floor with the mouth open.

Edit: I'll ask my mum for a photo of it if you like. I will any way, I think.

They all sound like something that SNOPES.com would be on to. Urban legends and the like and all those forwards and News items that you don't believe are true.

Still this thread is a bit of fun, so not a problem.

Having a go is very Australian, AG. Try the "famous names" thing again.  :D  Using the same name again is "lazy" .... you can use Google to find a different name ....  ;)

In this sort of thing, what is the point of 'allowing' Google?  Even I can manage that.  No skill or knowledge involved.

False—he had to turn pages to do his job, and effects related to death apply too, like slumping, not going home etc.

False - seeing the stars does not depend on the level of light you can see - only on the level of light that affects the dust layers above Earth.... it is still daylight above when you are looking in a well.... so the same amount of sun light still reflects off the dust etc.....
