Two men have been arrested in further Operation Appleby counter-terrorism raids in Merrylands and Bankstown in Sydney.

Abdullah Salihy, 24, was arrested at Memorial Avenue in Merrylands and Mohammad Alamouie, 20, was arrested in Bankstown.

Alamouie's brother was charged with terrorism offences earlier this month.

A senior police source told the ABC Salihy was planning a "similar type of attack that happened at Parramatta police headquarters".

The counter-terrorism raids are part of an ongoing police operation that has been focusing on a group of about 20 young men who police allege are committed to carrying out a terrorist attack in Australia.

There have been a series of police raids since the biggest counter-terrorism raids in Australia's history were carried out in September last year.

Further raids have been carried out this year after police accountant Curtis Cheng was shot dead outside the Parramatta police headquarters in October.

The police source said that the Merrylands home raided this morning was also raided earlier this month.

TWO men have been arrested in Western Sydney counter-terrorism raids over an alleged plot to drive explosives into a location at Sydney’s New Year’s Eve festivities in 2014.

Channel Nine is reporting the 20 and 24-year-old men had planned to target the Garden Island precinct.

They were arrested in dawn raids at Merrylands and Bankstown this morning.

NSW counter-terrorism police and Australian Federal Police conducted the raids as part of Operation Appleby.

A statement from the AFP said charges would be laid later today.

“The AFP can confirm that two people have been arrested in Sydney as part of the ongoing Operation Appleby investigation,” the statement said.

one of them faces life imprisonment if found guilty.

It must be a gross miscarriage of justice if they arrested a muslim. I know this because certain forum members say they can do no wrong..... ;D

Explain to me the logistics of that Ian. For example I'll be going overseas shortly. If your proposal was to be implemented I would not be allowed back in. But how would they know? Nowhere on my passport does it say I'm muslim - in fact there is no record of me being muslim anywhere. Its just my personal belief. Maybe they should do a polygraph on every single person entering the country. Don't see any logistical problems there at all.

But even if they could somehow know and I was stopped at the airport - I am a citizen of only one country - Australia. That would therefore make me stateless. Maybe the Australian embassy in Malaysia will put me up do you think? They would have to support me too, as I have no working rights in Malaysia. Or maybe they shouldn't help me - in which case they would have to strip me of my citizenship to divest themselves of their responsibility to me. Is that something you had in mind Ian - stripping people of their citizenship purely on the basis of their religion?

It is stupid and lazy and leads to people getting killed because you can't properly recognize threats.

It doesn't work. Just ask the Israelis who were looking for Middle Eastern terrorists to come and attack them and missed the Japanese Red Army terrorists who did the job instead with the Lod Airport Massacre. These JAPANESE terrorists killed 26 innocent people and injured 79 and this was all because the Israelis screwed up and didn't understand proper threat recognition.

There's a better method, it's called Behavior Pattern Recognition. You look at the actions of a person instead of focusing on just their race or apparent religion and if they have a pattern of suspicious behavior then you act and scrutinize further. If you profile people just on race and religion then you'll miss it.

Don't forget, there are a lot of ISIL terrorists from European Countries, carrying European Passports with very European features and names that will take advantage of you trying to profile what you perceive to be a Muslim..

I should point out now that my profession is a consultant in counter terrorism and I'm very good at what I do.

Seems to me national profiling would be simpler than racial profiling wouldn't you agree? - ie blanket ban on anyone from Pakistan or Indonesia etc. And you still haven't explained to me how you sort out the hindus from the muslims from India. Or how about the christians from the muslims from Lebanon? How does racial profiling distinguish them?

I get paid to be a consultant in counter terrorism and my speciality is Islamic Extremism. I focus on OSINT and HUMINT and work in collection and analysis. I contract my services out law enforcement on the federal level and have done it for a few years. I love my job.

Soon I'll be leaving it though to join the military. It's nicer working as a government employee than it is as a contractor. I'd also much rather be fighting groups like ISIL over in the Middle East rather than being stuck state side. I'm incredibly excited.

But what you're suggesting is impossible. How will you know they are Muslims? If a terrorist wants to come into Australia they're not going to be conspicuous.

racial [profiling would necassarily involve national profiling. Im not going to get any deeper into this, theres already 1 person on this forum pretending to be some expert in counter terrorism, who knows if he or she is trolling for information. You yourself are highly suspect as Muslim converts tend to hold the most extremist views. Treat it as my opinion. Zero Muslim traffic into this country preferred option. You wont find much opposition to this from most Australians. Im also in favour of indefinite detention of those who preach hatred and subversion. That would include your grand Mufti.
