Southbank is very good, close to most main attractions.   Be aware that to ride on most busses, trains and trams, you need to have a myrki card.  You can get them from most newsagents.

Yes - go to South bank -
have one small bet at the casino -
have a nice meal at one of the top restaurants -
get a 30 minute river boat ride out into the harbor -
then head off to Ackland street St Kilda for a nice cappuccino &
a walk along the beach to the pier where the penguins are.
You could even do some fishing from the pier.

You could also travel to the look out at the Dandenong ranges
& have tea & scones at many nice places up there.

The Botanic Gardens are great -  close to the city.
There is a restaurant there too.

Have an Italian  feed in Lygon street (Carlton North), stopping on the way for a beer at The John Curtin Hotel (Used to be across the road from ACTU HQ, unsure if they are still there), many a deal made there by Bob Hawke and co in the early days.

If you are staying in the city, Lygon St as previously mentioned,

plus check out Queen Victoria makets (Wed-Sun)

and perhaps have a look at Captain Cooks Cottage in Fitzroy Gardens
