Title: Quotables.... Post by Phemanderac on Nov 15th, 2015 at 8:02am
“Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.” - Denis Diderot
“Faith is believing what you know ain't so.” - Mark Twain "Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg “I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.” - Stephen F. Roberts “A belief which leaves no place for doubt is not a belief; it is a superstition." - José Bergamín “Atheism is a non-prophet organization.” - comedian George Carlin ”The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” - Brennan Manning “One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion.” - Arthur C. Clarke “Gods like atheists; it gives them something to aim at.” - Terry Pratchett “Calling atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.” - Don Hirschberg “You show me a communist and I will show you someone who will be upset if I eat his sandwich. You show me an anarchist and I will show you someone who calls the cops when he finds me rooting through his closet at 3am. You show me an atheist and I will show you someone begging for God's forgiveness when they taste their own mortality.” - J. P. Chilensky[citation needed] “An atheist doesn't have to be someone who thinks he has a proof that there can't be a god. He only has to be someone who believes that the evidence on the god question is at a similar level to the evidence on the werewolf question.” - John McCarthy "I do not believe in any religion. I will have nothing to do with immortality. We are miserable enough in this life without speculating upon another." - Lord Byron "The clergy believe that any power confided in me will be exerted in opposition to their schemes, and they believe rightly." - Thomas Jefferson "My earlier views on the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation have become clearer and stronger with advancing years." - Abraham Lincoln "The sermon was based on what he claimed was a well-known fact, that there were no Atheists in foxholes. I asked Jack what he thought of the sermon afterwards, and he said, 'here's a Chaplain who never visited the front.'" - Kurt Vonnegut in Hocus Pocus "The various modes of worship which prevailed in the Roman world were all considered by the people as equally true; by the philosopher as equally false; and by the magistrate as equally useful." - Edward Gibbon "There are no atheists in foxholes isn't an argument against atheism, it's an argument against foxholes." - James Morrow "One is often told that it is a very wrong thing to attack religion, because religion makes men virtuous. So I am told; I have not noticed it." - Bertrand Russell “’In God We Trust.’ I don't believe it would sound any better if it were true.” - Mark Twain “The fool says in his heart: 'There is no God.' The Wise Man says it to the world.” - Troy Witte “Religions are all alike -- founded upon fables and mythologies.” - Thomas Jefferson Whilst there are millions of quotable quotes (yep, I am guessing if you read this far you will notice a theme), I would like to finish with some by one of my favourite authors... The late, Douglas Adams... “People will then often say, 'But surely it's better to remain an agnostic just in case?' This, to me, suggests such a level of silliness and muddle that I usually edge out of the conversation rather than get sucked into it. (If it turns out that I've been wrong all along, and there is in fact a god, and if it further turned out that this kind of legalistic, cross-your-fingers-behind-your-back, Clintonian hair-splitting impressed him, then I think I would choose not to worship him anyway.)” - Douglas Adams "If I were not an atheist, I think I would have to be a Catholic because if it wasn't the forces of natural selection that designed fish, It must have been an Italian." - Douglas Adams "I find the whole business of religion profoundly interesting. But it does mystify me that otherwise intelligent people take it seriously." - Douglas Adams Please enjoy and feel free to discuss or add. |

I often read Phils comments just to read the quotes he has on the bottom of his comments. Now sure how he does it so quickly but he seems to always find one relevant to his comment.

I'd take one quote from God over a million human quotes. After all, how often is man wrong? 95% of the time?

And it is one-dimensional. Faith goes first where fact often follows. It takes faith to start a business based on something as sill as a 'search engine' on that internet thingy. It takes faith to believe an intellectually disabled child can rise to lead people. Facts are great, but they will never exceed their limitations. Faith is what takes people beyond mere facts. "Those who reject faith will largely be nameless, for their great deeds will be few and their exploits diminished. wrong way around dopey ...... people have faith in those things because their faith is supported by factual past experiences. Your examples are faith based on facts. |
