Here is another charming little vignette from your friends in the Muzzlim World. And I had the temerity to describe Islam as tribal, ignorant, hate-filled, and superstitious.

No doubt our resident ayatollah will be able to reconcile this atrocity with his interpretation of Islam.

Bangladeshi secular publisher hacked to death

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-34688245

A Bangladeshi publisher of secular books has been hacked to death in the capital Dhaka in the second attack of its kind on Saturday, police say.

Faisal Arefin Dipon, 43, was killed at his office in the city centre, hours after another publisher and two secular writers were injured in an attack.

A local affiliate of al-Qaeda said it carried out the attacks.
There has been a series of attacks on secularists since blogger Avijit Roy was hacked to death in February.

Both publishers targeted on Saturday published Roy's work.
Mr Dipon was found dead at the Jagriti Prokashoni publishing house, in his third-floor office.

"I saw him lying upside down and in a massive pool of blood. They slaughtered his neck. He is dead," his father, the writer Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq, said, quoted by AFP.

Earlier on Saturday, armed men burst into the offices of publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul.

They stabbed Mr Tutul and two writers who were with him, locked them in an office and fled the scene, police said.

The three men were rushed to hospital, and at least one of them is in a critical condition.

The two writers were named by police as Ranadeep Basu and Tareque Rahim.

Ansar al-Islam, al-Qaeda's Bangladeshi affiliate, posted messages online saying it had carried out Saturday's attacks.

Roy, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin and critic of radical Islamism, was murdered in February by suspected Islamists. His wife and fellow blogger Bonya Ahmed was badly injured in the attack.

Three other bloggers have since been killed.

Timeline: Attacks on bloggers

27 February: Avijit Roy attacked and killed while walking home from a book fair. His wife Bonya Ahmed was also hurt

30 March: Washiqur Rahman hacked to death near his home in Dhaka

12 May: Blogger Ananta Bijoy Das attacked and killed in Sylhet

7 August: Blogger Niloy Neel hacked to death at home by gang armed with machetes

Self censorship is a reasonable course of action?

Absolutely. Its called being responsible gatekeepers of the infomation available. News rooms have to make these calls all the time - deciding whether its responsible to potentially inflame volatile relationships between groups by publishing contentious material.

Publishing the Muhammed cartoons would not stoke the "anti Muslim flames".

I disagree. The bomb in the turban cartoon made pretty clear insinuations about the entire muslim community.

If only they had heeded Gandalf's advice. Sounds to me like they were making insinuations and inflaming tensions.

Sounds to me as if the attacks led to huge local protests. It also sounds as if the attacks were organised by a foreign, al Qaida -backed terrorist group.

I’d say it sounds like cashed-up Islamist fundamentalists are hitting poor countries like Bangladesh and  the locals aren’t too pleased, wouldn’t you?

Bengalis have a long literary tradition and are not too happy being told what to publish.

Clash of civilisations, innit.

Every ancient document that mentions a mohammed in the past is proof that it was mohammed that made up islam and he actually existed. Not one document however mentions a muslim, islam or the qu'ran until 60 years after fictitious mohammeds pretend death.

No no K, FD is gallantly standing up for freedom by being careful to not acknowledge any muslims who stand up to intimidation and oppression. Just like he went into all sorts of contortions to label a peaceful rally protesting the violent overthrow of a democratically elected government in Egypt as a sinister front for oppressive Islam.

See acknowledging freedom loving muslims is spineless apologetics that undermines freedom.

Its a bit of a copout to conclude that therefore individuals living in Bangladesh are inferior human beings and individuals living in Australia are superior human beings. Our ancestors which provided the society we have today had a number of advantages - including settling a  sparsely populated land, and undergoing a cultural genocide of the inhabitants that were here. Its a little rich for someone born in an already prosperous society to grandstand against someone born in an already poverty-stricken society.

Take an individual from Bangladesh and given equal opportunity, I daresay they would be able to create at least as equally successful life for themselves as you could Soren.

Bangladesh is full of Bangladeshis who form the country in their own image. A hell-hole is a hell-hole because of the way its inhabitants relate to each other, nothing more, nothing less.

Bangladeshis are victims of no-one but other Bangladeshis.

“There is a self-hatred in the West that can be considered only as something pathological. The West attempts in a praiseworthy manner to open itself completely to the comprehension of external values, but it no longer loves itself; it now only sees what is despicable and destructive in its own history, while it is no longer able to perceive what is great and pure there.”

This attitude of self-detestation is both the seed and the fruit of what we have come to call multiculturalism. Benedict does not reject multiculturalism in toto, arguing for its spiritualization, but recognizes that it “is sometimes mostly the abandonment and denial of what is one’s own, a flight from what is one’s own.”

Stupid or mendacious? Mendacious or stupid? Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world, and one of the most environmentally vulnerable. It's only resource is its cheap labour, which the multinationals capitalize upon. They get the wages, we get cheap clothes - a win-win, no?

I guess they could always work two 12 hour shifts at the KMart sweatshop. That way, they could make two dollars a day.

You'd do better to ask why Bangladeshis are so great. Try that aspect.

Developing countries are all crap-holes. I can't think of one that isn't. Once countries reach a certain stage of development, things change. Thailand and Malaysia fit into this category now. Once there's enough funding for services - health, transport, police, local government, things get cleaned up. Society becomes more orderly.

Actually, I can think of a developing country that's not a crap-hole: Vietnam. It's one of the poorest countries in the region, but it has a sense of order. Vietnamese have pride in their traditions and a strong work ethic, but they're not swamped with the population the subcontinent has. Vietnam, of course, is a fiercely nationalist communist state.

Population is the main reason why India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are such crap-holes. China, on the other hand, manages its population through a one-party state. It is much easier to create cities and move people from rural areas into apartment blocks when you have a strong government. It's much easier to impose things like a one-child policy.

Many of Bangladesh's problems stem from the powerlessness of its government, the general rule in all crap-holes. However, the recent rise of liberal democracy in Bangladesh is a big reason for its development. Bangladesh is currently going through a bit of an economic boom, but the money comes from outside. The poorest Bangladeshis see little of this money, but there is an emerging, well-educated middle class.

Bangladesh is a client state of the Western multinational corporations, but it's now entering the orbit of China, who are building most of the roads and power stations. This phenomenon is occurring throughout much of the developing world, including Indonesia and much of Africa. Chinese influence is spreading - not through "soft" means like diplomacy or Western popular culture, or hard means like military alliances and/or threats; but investment.

No country develops on its own. Crap-holes are the result of industrialization, not "culture" or inferior genes. One of the biggest crap-holes of all times is Northern England. It was the standard case study for crap-holes for years. Marx, Engals, Orwell, all went to Britain's industrial north when they wanted to study poverty and the effects of industrialization.

Bangladesh is in this phase now, which is why it's a crap-hole. Bengali culture is another discussion if you want to talk about that.

Bangladesh is apparently immensely rich in "generous, intelligent and well-read people": there are 160 million of them.
Yet they cannot organise 'generous and intelligent' social institutions in their own country. Social institutions cost no money, but require only generosity and intelligence, respect and solidarity. Generous and intelligent people should be able to cooperate, respect and support each other.

Instead, Bangladesh is one of the most corrupt countries.

Bangladesh is quite a small region with much of it under water. Having 160 million people and climbing really isn't very smart. When you see their ports and rivers they look dirty and full of rubbish. They have too many people. Like you said it's the same for most of that part of the world. If you are going to live like that you need order and technology like China. Otherwise it's a mess always at the whims of mother nature with massive poverty and  people dying before their time.

Good to see you do some reading, Homo. Like I said, Bangladesh is a crap-hole. People who have kids don’t think about adding to the population. In most parts of the world, children are a form of aged care. Only the middle classes save money for their retirement. Most people  in the world plan for their retirement by producing people to take care of them, bring in the harvest, and travel to the cities (or other countries) to get work and send home money.

This is how most people live, it’s not about being smart or less tinted or having better genes, it’s about the only options open to you. In this case, those options include the ability to produce labour - literally - by having kids.

Maybe, Baron, but I’m a bit confused how a post on economic growth in Pakistan inspired a reply about the Australian cricket team.

That part of the world is breeding itself into oblivion. How stupid is that??

Depends. Pakistan has the highest economic growth in the region. It's thanks solely to population. Pakistan will be in the G20 by 2030.

Stupid, mendacious, all. Allah Uakbar, no?

And how exactly is it in our interest to import people whose only motivation in coming here is to send money offshore or to import unproductive grandmothers??

That’s a qualitative question, old chap.

How much do you send home?

You are a slippery, slimey PB, aren't you, PB.

For a grown up to be so oily and dishonest - one needs to come to forums like this to see that grubs like you exist and walk the streets, 'helping famillies'.

Staying mum, eh?

I understand. Mormor doesn’t like you giving away any family secrets, eh?

Your recipes are safe with us, dear boy. We won’t give away your secret ingredient, no sir.

No speaka the English, eh?

I just want to be sure you feel welcome and not a slamic outcast.

Mostly there is no great benefit to the country introducing people who send their money overseas and act as anchors for unproductive grandmothers.

Any rational immigration program that had as an intention to benefit the country would not score such immigrants highly without some other compelling advantages.

Unassimilated, eh? Let's ask.

How do you feel you're getting on, old chap? Settling in a bit more? Sending less back to the old country?

Don't take this badly, Greggery. Unflushable is a term of endearment. It refers to the old boy's favourite food.

Take moi. I'm a Pakistani Bvgger. This is the old boy's favourite pastime.
