Title: Remember Ashby~Brough/Slipper's Diary?
Post by Aussie on Sep 28th, 2015 at 3:09pm
Turnbull's appointment, by way of reward, of Brough will bite eventually.  Brough was up to his neck in the unlawful mis-use (theft) of Slipper's diary, and that incident has not gone away, and neither should it.

Link.

Did you see his first Lateline interview with Emma Albericci?

He hurled into her. He was visibly angry at her questions about Slipper. He shouted her down in a very military manner. It was not a good look. Albericci's questions were fair. They're all on the public record. People expect answers.

Brough's elevation could well be a thorn in Turnbull's side, but he's a mate.

it would be poetic justice if they locked Brough up. He deserves it for being the slimy underhanded dog he is.

Check out the ABC. It should be there.

He blamed her for quoting from the first judge's ruling on what was judged to be a political conspiracy. He said that this was overruled in the Supreme court, but I have my doubts.

Albericci chose not to hit back. Ashby was almost berko. It was nearly a Clive Palmer walk-off situation.

Brough didn't get that this is what journalists do: they put questions to people that they're free to rebut. Brough wanted a cosy chat about the new government. When Albericci raised the Slipper thing, Brough saw red.

I found the link which includes the TV interview.  Now, I'll go look for the Full Court comments that Brough was making much of.

At the 8.24 mark.

Link.

Quote:
Mr Brough is being investigated under Section 70 of the Crimes Act, which deals with the disclosure of information by Commonwealth officers.

It carries a maximum two-year prison sentence.

If Brough is found guilty, his seat in Parliament becomes vacant. A by-election would be necessary, and you can bet your house that the swing in a by-election caused by the criminal conduct of the MP will be larger than the swing in Canning.

Thanks. I'm willing to bet Brough's appeal ruled on something completely different.

It'll never happen. He won't even be charged.

This is probably what Brough was referring to from the Full Court (Federal Court) Appeal:

Quote:
That Brough was prepared to consider allegations of misuse of travel entitlements in relation to Slipper and to
look at evidence produced by Ashby which might support these allegations does not necessarily mean that his purpose was
to harm Slipper politically.  It is at least equally open to
infer that Brough was assisting a young political staffer who believed he had unearthed corrupt conduct.

Amounts to nothing more than speculation/observation upon speculation/observation, and it is certainly not the clear vindication Brough was claiming with Emma A on Lateline.

Bear in mind, this was not an appeal by Brough.  It was an appeal by Ashby.  Those comments were made in passing, as were the original damning comments of  Rares J in the initial Trial.

Excellent research.

You’re right, Aussie. Brough was not on trial. This does, however appear to overrule the previous statement on political conspiracy.

who just happened to be a ruthlessly ambitious politician directly gunning for Slipper's seat.

You could attack that 'finding' from many quarters Gandalf.  It is truly pathetic and reeks of a predetermination to 'clear' Brough.

To be fair, the original comments of Rares J. were also not necessary to make in coming to his ultimate decision, so he too can be attacked on the same basis.  He too may have been willing to have some political impact.

What I find astounding is that Brough contends he was uncovering corruption even though Peter Slipper was found to have committed no crime and Brough is not a police officer or even an officer of the Crown....Imagine if every citizen was allowed to illegally obtain private information on individuals based on allegations from a disgruntled third person....Brough should be prosecuted and suffer the full force of the law IMO!!!

I agree entirely, and Brough is doing all he can to take the position that his activity is in the past and we should all move on.

Nah, prima facie, the Brough prick was a principal accomplice to theft (of the diary) and that matter must be throughly investigated.

Well yes, there is that. But it’s not as if the Liberal Party old boy’s club has any say over the judicial process, shurely.

Especially when the Coalition have threatened to prosecute anyone who reveals abuse or crimes in our detention centres....This must be the most hypocritical Government in history....I wonder if Brough investigated Bronwyn Bishop or any of the other thieving politicians???
