Title: Abbott's Legacy - Zero, Nada, Zip. Post by ImSpartacus2 on Sep 19th, 2015 at 10:58am
This Editorial is from "The Saturday Paper" Sep 19, 2015. I'm so glad this very little man is gone.
"Kicking the Abbott It is no exaggeration to say Tony Abbott is the worst prime minister Australia has had. To the extent that his brief and destructive leadership of the country is remembered, it will not be remembered well. Abbott is a prime minister without a legacy. In attempting to defend one this week, he came up with not much: some jobs, a few trade agreements, an infrastructure project, a border protection regime founded on human rights abuses, a royal commission so compromised by bias its own commissioner had to consider removing himself. Abbott governed for the past and the few conservatives desperate to continue living there. He governed against science and in contempt of the environment. He governed in opposition to social equality, in terror of reform. His was a government of fear and avoidance, a rolling sideshow anxiously avoiding the fact it had nothing to add and no idea what to do. Abbott spent his time in opposition degrading the office of the prime minister. His was a campaign of debasement: a coarsening of debate, a running down of the respect once stored in the institution. Those who say he was a fine opposition leader do so in error. There is no victory in destroying what you set out to win. On prevailing at the 2013 election, he placed on his head a small and tinny crown. He did nothing to repair it in the years that have passed since. Indeed, he added only to its dents and tarnish. He treated law like a plaything. He made policy at odds with the country’s own constitution. He fought consensus and held out against change. He refused humility. He let run the island camps where women and children are raped and men killed. He turned in from the world. He mocked treaties. He failed obligations. He fed prejudice wherever he could. He was a coward with reform. He left the tax system lumbering and unfair. He failed to articulate policy. He hectored the ABC, cowing it and becoming ludicrously involved in editorial processes. He shunned innovation. He craved distraction. Abbott’s great fear, and the fear of those people left supporting him, is tomorrow. He is fearful of same-sex marriage. Fearful of an economy remade by climate change. Fearful of the fair distribution of taxes. Fearful of power as it ebbs away from the places where it was once concentrated. But tomorrow is always close; his prime ministership was always doomed. Abbott is an experiment that failed. He is proof that Australia cannot be governed from the far right, just as it cannot be governed from the far left. He was the last hope and final holdout of a group of people wishing desperately against a modern Australia. His time in the office leaves a hole in this country’s agenda. A period of incompetent stasis. Two wasted years we must now hungrily get back. He will not be missed. He should not be praised. He was a failure selfishly wishing that the world would fail with him. We can only hope his like will not be seen again." |

He said “jobs and growth” a lot but never said where the j&g would be. It wasn’t in Australia which is now in recession!

I think the article is a bit harsh, it is all true but there is no need to say it.

Although Labor did a complete about face on illegal immigration at the eleventh hour, I did not trust them to follow through. I voted Liberal, not Abbott. They stopped the boats, but are now talking about flying in 12,000 Syrians, so you can't win, no matter who you vote for.
Abbott's legacy will always be the PM who knighted Prince Philip, the PM who threatened to take Putin to task and lost his nerve, and finally, the PM who coined the phrase, Suppository of all Wisdom. He did point out that the UN is in the habit of lecturing us, but he did nothing about it. |

The one thing that Abbott did do was get you leftards in a big frenzy. Not bad for a PM that didn't mean much. You'd think they wouldn't care about him if that was true.

Abbott wasted the last 2 years as PM .... what does one expect when you have a government who's main concern, for at least the first year, was to try and destroy everything the previous govt. had done rather than try to build for the future. Even towards the end of his second year, there were still no long term plans for the country.
Compare the achievements Rudd outlined in his speech when he was first ousted as Pm, and then look at Tonys list of achievements in his speech. The man is pathetic and those that supported him are idiots or the highest caliber. |

Is this Abbott's intrinsic value, minus US$ 0.02? |

I said long ago that the watershed moment in Tony's government was the statement that 'the age of entitlement is over' - he just didnt realise at the time what that actually meant... and how much 'entitlement' he and his confreres were receiving every day....
In that way he has done an enormous service for this country. |

No, sorry. Labor and the Greens made that mess. The problem with the CT was that didn't seem to be any regulation to stop the costs (of the price per tonne for carbon) being passed down to the consumers. It didn't really matter what opinion the people held on AGW, it was the increase in gas and power bills that upset people. |

And yet people were fully compensated for the cost of power increasing. You can not really claim that my comment is incorrect if you look at the relevant time line. It is clear that the opinion turned as response to the Liberal and Media politically driven campaign against action on carbon emissions and not the other way. |
