Can you identify the paper published by the first scientist denying climate change.
If you don't know you are a denier. A true skeptic will know. |

There are very few scientists who dismiss the theory of greenhouse warming, however, within the science community there is a far more nuanced range of opinion than most people realize.
The Left media has rather successfully propagated a binary mentality on the issue. Specifically: 1. greenhouse warming exists or it doesn't. 2. If it exists, it's dangerous, so we must act now to mitigate it. Sure, 97% of climate scientists do accept that man is responsible for climate change but how many accept that it's dangerous? It should be noted that the specified 2 degrees C above pre industrial temperature was actually promoted by an economist and not a scientist. Of course the main area of conjecture among scientists is the specified (modeled) number for climate sensitivity. There are several prominent scientists who believe that the actual value is below the range specified by IPCC. The level of uncertainty stems from the assigned magnitude and direction of feedbacks. |

And of course how ECS is calculated. For instance, the climate models use a mixture of physics and parameterisation. Parameterisation is where the modellers don't know how something should be represented, and so insert a number to arrive at an answer. That number has a chance between zero and Buckley's of being correct. It is called an emergent number. SKS and others skirt around that fact. |

Peer review is a critical part of the scientific process You are confusing the overall scientific process with the scientific METHOD which scientists use to discover and analyse new phenomena. (an analogy would be a post graduate student having written up a PhD thesis. The thesis is sent to independent scientific experts in that specific field who determine its worthiness for admission into PhD-ness - the student must also defend their thesis before the examiners. This step will examine everything that was done in the PhD candidature and evaluate the validity of the results and conclusions made etc) Think of the scientific peer review process as a final stage of validation (at that particular time of publication- of course science is littered with paradigm shifts and collapse of theories due to NEW ways of thinking and NEW data, observations and evidence.) I thought you understood the basics of how science works as a profession. Perhaps it explains why you are so confused about the high school levels science that underpins the FACT called AGW? |

The peer review helps the publisher (that is, the editor-in-chief or the editorial board) deciding whether the work should be accepted, considered acceptable with revisions, or rejected. " |

Title: Re: What the media isn't telling you Climate Change Post by Chimp_Logic on Aug 15th, 2015 at 9:48pm
So why are you coupling the SCIENTIFIC peer review process with the publishing industry?
The scientific peer review stage is an important element of the scientific process. The "scientific method" is not to be confused with the peer reviewed process. The PhD thesis examination stage is a prime example of peer review. And guess what? When the thesis passes this stage, the PhD is able to be published. When a scientific article or thesis fails the peer review process is may be due to a variety of reasons. The scientific method used may be fine, but perhaps the work isnt novel or merely a derivative of previous work. |

Laugh away, but I'm still right. Getting your work reviewed by someone who understands it is a fairly common practice, but is in no way an absolute 'necessity'. It just saves the embarrassment from typos, bad spelling and silly mistakes (i.e the moon is made of green cheese) Most authors/writers get friends or colleagues to look over their work before they send it to the publisher, so they have an idea of how the public will react. But that is NOT a "law", just a convenience, like "spell check" on a computer. |

you still dont understand how the process works. Profoundly novel work can still be assessed by your peers for adhering to the basic scientific method and being mathematically consistent. Paul Dirac's PhD thesis for example, submitted in his early 20s managed to get him a Nobel prize in Physics - a very rare achievement. He mathematically predicted the existence of the anti-electron (or anti matter). It was several years later that experimental evidence verified his mathematical/theoretical prediction. There were no physicists available that were experts in the area of anti-matter - it wasnt even an experimental area research yet. What the peer review process demands in this case are reviewers/examiners that can best assess the fundamentals and basic scientific claims contained in the thesis. the scientific method itself hasnt been re-invented and the logic and axioms of mathematics are well understood and can be applied. |

have a read of this gizmo
ONE day in 1924, Albert Einstein received a parcel from Professor Langevin of the University of Paris. He wanted Einstein to vet the PhD thesis of Louis de Broglie, who had espoused a theory which was rather mind-boggling. Langevin, being the supervisor, was not sure of the acceptability of de Broglie’s work. The thesis examiner was not sure whether to pass the candidate either. They wanted Einstein’s comment and assessment. Einstein later gave his stamp of approval by saying de Broglie “had lifted a corner of the great veil”. His PhD thesis later earned de Broglie a Nobel Prize in Physics. Einstein knew a gem when he saw one. Weiner Heisenberg would have failed his PhD viva if not for his famous and caring supervisor who protected him and put in a good word for him. His PhD thesis was a theoretical investigation into fluid dynamics. There were no instruments involved. His examiner happened to be an experimentalist and he grilled him on things like: “How does a battery work?” and “What is the resolving power of a microscope?” These questions were not expected by Heisenberg and he could not give satisfactory answers. According to David Lindley, in his book Uncertainty, he could not recall the text book formula, tried to work it out on the spot, and got it wrong. In Lindley’s words, Heisenberg “got his doctorate, but with a grade barely above pass”. Ironically, Heisenberg later became a world famous physicist, with a Nobel prize in Physics to boot. His career in physics outshone that of his ex-examiner and ex-supervisor. |

In his book Massive: The Higgs Boson and the Great Hunt in Science, Ian Sample told the story of Dennis Sciama (later PhD supervisor to Stephen Hawking at Cambridge) who one day rushed to his PhD supervisor’s office and knocked on the door.
When he was called in, he said: “Professor Dirac, I’ve just thought of a way of relating the formation of stars to cosmological questions, shall I tell you about it?” Dirac just coldly said “No”, leaving poor Sciama little choice other than to walk back out. Despite being a difficult supervisor, many still want Dirac’s supervision because his laureate aura is too compelling. It adds value to your PhD thesis. This is what matters most. |

NO Chimp...you have NOT yet 'demonstrated' that I am not a skeptic...Whether or not you disagree with my position on the political ideology of human caused climate change, the fact that I think it's an idiotic, and unsupported idea really does make me a skeptic... |

Correct. Publishers wanted a proof reading service, this is the basis of the peer review dogma. Open to 'pal' reviews and fragrant abuse and simple not a valid test of any science. Fits in nicely with the snake oil spruiking spivs like monkey. |

Statistics is a branch of mathematics and is well understood. A p value of 0.1 is crap. But that is precisely what Karl et al cited. Why didn't you reply to Karl et al's To refresh your memory - '173 Boldface indicates trends that are significant at the 0.10 significance level. An asterisk notes that 174 the trend is significant at the 0.10 level based on the uncertainty in the trend estimate using the 175 IPCC methodology only.' http://www.sciencemag.org/content/suppl/2015/06/03/science.aaa5632.DC1/Karl-SM.pdf So was it Peer reviewed or Pal reviewed/ |

Climate change has been with us since the Earth formed into a molten piece of rock, otherwise it would still be so. No matter what humans do they cannot control climate change on the Earth. Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) on the other hand is a hoax by the oligarchy to create a $2 trillion dollar carbon derivatives market so they can tax you and me on the air we breath while they play their games with government and peoples money. |

Too right gizmo. When science with its theories gets proven by observations and data in accordance with that theory and is then documented and implemented, then the science becomes engineering. Science does not rely on consensus and peer review. Didn't Cambridge University throw out Newton's Principia Mathematica because they couldn't understand what Newton had accomplished. So much for peer reviewed. |

gizmo_3466 believes there is only one type of opinion. Every opinion is of equal weight. This is why Courts of law put expert witnesses up in the dock to swear under oath and deliver "OPINIONS" and then the prosecution (or defense) grabs a complete stranger from the street and puts them on the stand to give an opposite OPINION. Case closed according to gizmo's Sircus world of puppetry and clown maggotry :D
gizmo_4266 is one very strange digger - keeps deepening the hole of disgrace deeper and deeper the more he tries to defend his lunacy and crack pot AGW denialism. Is there a limit to gizmo's intense hatred of the little innocent children and his devotion and love of the Peabody Coal Company and their profit margins??? |

Nope, wrong again as usual, oh banana breath. There are lots of different "opinions" and they all have almost no basis in science. I don't 'hate' children. I just don't want to stick them with massive debt, for no benefit. Despite what you believe, the evidence for 'catastrophic, human caused climate change' is at best ambiguous, and at worst, monstrously (or even criminally) over-stated (invented). |
