Title: Should speakers sever party ties? Post by John Smith on Jul 22nd, 2015 at 2:42pm
Should we follow the UK and make it mandatory that all speakers sever all party ties? I think it's a good start although forcing them to sever ties doesn't make them any less biased.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-21/earl-bishop-should-follow-britains-lead-and-leave-the-libs/6636396 If Bronwyn Bishop wishes to remain Speaker, she should sever links with the Liberal Party. And our Parliament should follow Britain's lead and make this move mandatory for future speakers, writes Chris Earl. The problem with incumbents of the speaker's chair in Australia's House of Representatives is that they are beholden to party machines that determine their tenure as the nation's number one standard bearer for the democratic ideals of the nation |

I think the speaker role should be a different and independent path.
Maybe they could be chosen from Helicopter pilots ? |

Hello John :)
If we adopted the UK model, do you think it would really change much here? |

The first Speaker of the Federal Parliament did sever party ties. Slipper is one of the few Speakers who've come anywhere near that principle. B.Bishop, on the other hand, is such a poor custodian of impartiality that she has even used her Speaker's office for Liberal party functions.
IMO it would be a good idea for the Speaker to become an independent by renouncing any party affiliation. |

Any particular reason it needs to be someone elected to government instead of some kind of public servant role like the clerk?

Should speakers sever party ties?
Even if they severed ties with their party, they'd still be sympathetic to that party. The Speaker should be selected from the public service. The way it is at the moment is like the referee of a football game being on the board of the club of one of the teams that are playing. |

as has been amply demonstrated in the recent past where your goldfish memory doesnt allow you to go, Hansard stats show that ALL speakers favour the government of the day and Bishop's performance is not at significant variance from anyone else. I am equally sure you will absolutely refuse to accept that and demand a link which you will then deny in a months time when the topci inevitably arises again. GET A MEMORY. |

Fact is that Slipper was one of our better speakers and the incumbent speaker is in a small group at the other end of the scale if not all by herself. Bishops performance has been an embarrassment to the Australian government. |

The Courier Mail (paywall so no link) ran an article on her which sets out the comparative stats. So...let's see your link to what you reckon Hansard says. I have no idea why you would regard it as difficult, even for someone like yourself, to grasp that travel rorts are not the equivalent of her performance in the House as Speaker, but they are directly linked. Tony Burke must be relishing the next Question Time. They will, quite rightly, relentlessly mock the crap out of her. |

This would make sense as the Government is generally on the defense and the Opposition on attack, often the Opposition will overstep the boundaries of what is a relevant question and go into a theatrical attack which would be right to get called on. The problem is Bishop is just such a flat out partisan hack it is insane and that is when she barely gets the basics behind being a speaker correct. Bishop isn't only partisan, she's flat out incompetent in the role for a whole myriad of reasons (which has now becoming a running joke in Question Time in itself) |

It won't make any difference with regard to bias. The only option is to make the role non-political by making it a job for which ordinary citizens can apply and are selected based upon merit by a panel of parliamentary officers, not politicians. It's the only way to make it unbiased. |
